So if you couldn't tell from the 15 minute video, I love this plugin. You can see the amount of work the team at Dehancer have put into it, by checking out the articles and FAQ sections on their website - blog.dehancer.com/about/ . Just having this as a free online resource is great, even without the plugin itself - very appreciative of what Dehancer have done here, not only with the film emulation, but also the educational aspect!
It's worth noting that while I used a lot of grainy looks in this video, there's absolutely no reason why you can't turn the grain off and go for a more modern, detailed look, with the colour of your chosen film stock. As you're working in Resolve, you can also add nodes before or after Dehancer to open out and get more specific with your color grade. So it's flexible enough to be used for a more modern look with filmic colours as a base too, and I'll definitely be using it this way also.

Another thing I say is key to having a solid emulation is saving your highlights, the range of films highlights is leaps and bounds better than digital sensors, so if anyone is shooting to emulate and you can stop down a bit or if you can shift your EI so you have the most stops in highlights possible that way you’ll get that smooth roll off film has

This the best video I watched on dehancer. I saw the plugin when it was in beta but never really understood much what it does. Watch a couple of videos here n there but yours really showed how its woaw. I recently sold my bmpcc og too and been missing the image a lot. New sensors images are so digital that everyone work looks the same :( and I hate to look like everyone!

Same settings as any other camera really, no big secret behind that - I usually shoot BRAW 5:1 or 8:1, that's the only Pocket 6K specific thing I do to be honest haha! I don't make LUTs, just use them! You can go a long way with Resolve's built in film print LUT (I have a colour grading tutorial for £8 on my website which involves this) and I also really like Vision Color's Impulz LUTs. Yo this is great. When you use the print film lut in resolve, my understanding is that they are made for Rec709 color and Cineon gamma, I saw that you transformed the color to blackmagic film and then added saturation. I’m sure you have messed with this already, but I thought I would mention at least. The results with rec709 color in your output transform would mean you wouldn’t have to push the saturation, it should just look proper straight away!

Thank you so much! Dehancer is generally the final node in the tree, then any other adjustments can be made non-destructively underneath. But Dehancer also allows you change things like exposure, so it's a balance between the plugin and anything you may need to tweak before it!

Thank you! I highly recommend it! So for this, I actually uploaded a 75GB 12 bit DNxHR file just to make sure the grain showed at 4K (it becomes murky at 1080, but that's just good old KZbin) - however, I should think exporting that 12 bit DNxHR in 4K and using something like Handbrake to transcode to a high quality h264/h265 would have worked nicely too (albeit a little loss of quality in comparison). I'll check this on future uploads! I had to leave my computer running all night to upload that 75GB file haha so I'm not keen on doing that for every upload!

Man, the more I see footage of the BMMCC, the more I'm glad I own one. I love the convenience of the Pocket 4K, but it's just something about the motion, whether it's the camera moving or the subject, that feels... like I'm looking at a scene that was shot on a camera... rather than being immersed in the moment. That snow falling shot at 13:19 is a really beautiful captured example. There's an immediate feeling conveyed in a matter of seconds.

@@RobEllisCinematographer Yeah I grew up with 90's movies and I still think its probably the best decade for cinema, so I'm kind of biased in what I think movies should look like. There are still great examples of cinematography in more recent movies like Interstellar, A Quiet Place, and anything Deakins, so really whether film or digital it ultimately comes down to using the tools to make the film the best it can be. It's really cool to live in a time where so many tools are at our disposal and that really anyone can make an actual, proper film. Every time I come back to one of your videos it reignites that creative spark. You've got a fantastic channel here, keep up the great work!

Born in 91 so I watched a lot of 80's and 90's movies when I was younger - film is definitely burned into my brain and represents a lot of feelings and ideas I can't quite express in words. Even down to old family photos being disposable camera film prints, those memories exist purely in film form now and I find the whole process of film, and on some level the way it looks, similar to memories and dreams, imperfect and rough around the edges. To me it's just very congruent to the way our minds process images and I think that's why it feels a little more magic - like something you can't quite grasp but feels really familiar! I totally agree that we live in an exciting time to have all these options with the tools we use to create, at affordable prices too! I can't recommend it enough! Resolve has some VHS emulation built in under OFX I believe, but whether or not it's very authentic I couldn't say - would be an interesting one to see done properly!

Hi, can you recommend exporting settings for good grain? Cause I'd always export my weddings and event videos by h264 codec at 10.000 bitrate, but the grain looks really bad with that settings. So I need something, that my customers will be able to see on any device(I think h265 would be problematic) and it won't be tens of gigabytes... Double check what profile your camera records to, but most cameras now go to their own flavour of Rec.709 :)

I've always liked Filmconvert and have used it a fair amount for suitable work - but like you said, always felt like something was missing and it stopped me from using it as much as I would have liked to. I'm glad you're sold on Dehancer though, it really is bloody fantastic and I'm glad that came through on the video! Cheers man!

@@washbuns so far I've not done anything too complicated with it, mainly just graded with Dehancer as a final node and made little adjustments in nodes before if need be, along with using the 2383 emulation LUT as a final node as shown in the video! I'll definitely be using Dehancer as a base for some more complicated grades, although my node trees can be an absolute mess and no one needs to publicly see that haha 🤣

Found it ! Is there a chart that says what white balance should be set for each film stock ?

For the motion picture stocks a D will dictate daylight (so 5500k or 5600k, I forget which exactly!) and T will dictate tungsten (so 3200k) - all of the other stocks are still film stocks and most of them I believe would be daylight. You can always double check the name of the film to see if its daylight or tungsten with a Google search 😁 edit: obviously you don't have to match them completely and can still use white balance creatively as we have the flexibility of digitally working with the video!

Brilliant! I own this plugin. Could you do a quick tutorial on grading with Dehancer, maybe indoors and outdoors? FYI, I usually grade under wide gamut because of the insane dynamic range it gives me. And another important question: which is the best Kelvin settings for each scenario? I know outdoors is 5600. How about indoors during daylight, etc? Or should I do a quick white balance in post? Cheers

Thanks Lee! It's a great plugin right?! I try to upload topics that are little lengthier on my channel, but in any situation using Dehancer really, I would grade exposure in a similar way to how I did it on this video when we looked the Expand and Print options - depending on the mood of the shot of course, as crushing the black point could be used for a certain look. The correct way to balance for the film stock as shown in the video is to use a white balance matching that of the film stock you're using, regardless of the situation, as this replicates the film stock colours accurately. However, there isn't any reason you can't get creative and make new looks by choosing a different white balance that fits your vision for the scene - or if you've only used tungsten lighting and you want to use a daylight balanced film stock, you might want to select a white balance closer to 3200K, for example. Hope that helps :)

Thanks Yann! Yeah I believe they're still optimising it for Windows so it can be pretty laggy. I'm running an extremely old system so I'm very much used to working around lag so I've not been too bothered by it, as long as the grade comes last in the chain! Rendering is a different issue though, I definitely need to update my system for that haha.

Do you get better results grading your footage first with Aces and then apply dehancer or can you edit Log footage using only Dehancer? I've different things.

You get slightly different results depending on your workflow - so it's entirely down to how you usually grade/how you want it to look :)

I was just wondering, is it worth ditching the pro mist filters for dehancer's bloom?

I wouldn't ditch the pro mist filters, as every project is different - Dehancer's bloom is a representation of the way bloom occurs when film grain is distributed, you might want a super clean modern image with bloom, in which instance a pro mist filter might suit that scenario better without the extra post processing involved. Many tools can be used for different purposes and it's always best to have options!

I‘m using this at the moment (saw it on your blog if I remeber correctly) and am hesitant of the extra money for dehance will give me much better results?! Nitrate is great, but Dehancer offers all the extra tools I demonstrated in the video which really sell the film look and feel. You can get a more modern look similar to the way I used Nitrate in that blog post using Dehancer, which is also in the video, but the team at Dehancer are also going to be implementing it into the plugin itself at some point soon! Very easy to use once you get used to it, it's just sliders really! :)

The 6K Pro is my current setup! I am sorely missing the IBIS from the S5, but only for really specific situations. I love both of the cameras, but the Blackmagic has the advantage of BRAW which is great!

Spherical aberrations or what you call bloom is not mainly caused by the coatings on the glass but by the lens design too. There are lenses that don’t have any coatings on the glass and are very sharp and have almost no spherical aberrations. And there’re lenses with modern coatings and lots of spherical aberrations.

Most of the grading itself when using Dehancer is contained in the plugin, so it's pretty plug and play in regards to using it in Resolve - it's just a case of dragging Dehancer from the OFX menu into a node - but I recommend looking up some basic tutorials on how to use nodes in Resolve, as you may want to adjust some things like colour/contrast/exposure-wise outside of the plugin to fine tune things :) if you're proficient in Premiere it should feel pretty intuitive to work out, but then again, I know how it feels to switch, as I used Premiere a few months ago and I couldn't make head or tail of it! Haha 😅

The older Blackmagic Cameras used Fairchild sensors in which gave it that film-like look. I'm thinking BM turned from these sensor due to the rise in the very polished, clean and overly sharp look from more modern cameras like Sony and Panasonic. BM had to cater to the common user so I totally understand why. ARRI may have something to do with as well considering BM was releasing camera's with the same goal - digital cinema camera that rendered an image like film. RED made a huge deal about ProRes so I wouldn't be surprised if ARRi shot back at BM for potentially putting a huge dent in a market they dominate.

I've not had the chance to test Dehancer with phone footage yet, but I have seen someone else do this online and it looked great, but I can't for the life of me find the video! You can definitely get good results using it with phone footage though. I'll have to run some tests soon! Thank you for the kind words!

I would ultimately recommend Pro, purely because you get all the emulation features - but with Lite you still get all the film stocks, colour, grain and bloom (and a couple other things I think), which are all still important features in making the look :)
