Robert, thank you for your video lessons! I am using your techniques on my dutch sheperd and it works great. A very high drive dog that adds a lot of energy to our house. We train him in a club in France where dog training unfortunately is less focused on canalizing the drive, but suppressing it. Being German EXPATs in France and being a dog owner for more than 20 years now, the French approach (and yes, we've tried several clubs) is not our cup of tea, so we searched an alternative method. A dutch sheperd is a challenge and definitely no dog for beginners. We had to adapt our approach to the needs of our dog- keeping the structure of our "pack" at the same time. Your video lessons were a very effective help here. Since we use your system (which is easy to train for high drive dogs and easy to memorize to most dog owners- I like the "binary dog" system), the dog develops great! Thumbs up and thank you!

Much success with my 9 month GSD pup because of you. I have purchased 2 tugs, 2 chuck it balls, 2 balls on strings and have used your method to teach; sit, platz, stand, aus, random combination, and even platz on the recall. He's very ball driven. When training is done I say "done" and he knows to return to our spot so I can switch leashes. Thank-you immensely for all your videos.

I'm dog-sitting for the weekend with a Doberman that is essentially only house-trained (he's 3 yrs old) and kind of knows "sit". I'm hoping I'll have him at least consistently dropping a toy by Sunday night. That and some leash manners. Very excited to use your techniques!

Great Video! I also liked the video of yours that uses the three different methods of teaching out. #1 Trade #2. Tug dies and #3 collar pressure with a buckle or martingale collar. Probably the biggest mistake in playing tug/teaching out is trying to hide the tug by moving it fast away from the dog.

This will help. I just bought a new dutch, she was transported for a week and yesterday was our first day together. I brought out the toy she wouldn’t release I waited and nothing, did stiff toy between legs and she bite me. Luckily it was in my yard so I didn’t freak out just calmly put her in the crate but I got the tug. I don’t blame her 1 week of transportation and a new home I tested the boundaries and now understand she had some frustration and that was it. 5 mins later she’s out of the crate living on me

Love your video. You are so kind to share your experience with dog training. I've been lucky never really trained dogs they just did what I wanted, mainly. I even had tricks they would like running down a paddock trying to catch an aeroplane. Funniest thing I ever saw. Have no idea how I taught that just said King get the plane and off he went jumping up all down the paddock. All planes flew away safely. Now at least for my next dog have some guidelines not just chance

Thank you very much for the huge amount of solid information on your channel. I have a question about the "leave it" command. In an other video you said that once you say leave it, it stays leave it (was with food) to avoid conflicts by the dog. But with the toy you do give it eventually. Is that okay? Or am I missing something.
@missjuhee
@missjuhee 5 жыл бұрын
Deurbelz If I understood your question correctly I think that’s why he keeps the commands separately. Leave it/Yuk/Fooey for things that are permanent leave it. Robert uses Out to relinquish what’s in the mouth. After watching his videos I realized that I have been using leave it for both situations (leaving something alone and also spitting it out) I am going to retrain and keep them separate now.

Thank you Robert! In another video I believe you mentioned that leave it must be trained where you never give that item back to them as the reward. This prevents anticipation of eventually getting that item, a big problem if it's dangerous right?

Thank you Robert. I have an issue, my dog GS 3yo, when taking the ball or tug, away from me, he does not come even if I show him another exact equal, movment, etc. likes me to chase him, enjoys it, but then lays down and I have to go and take the toy out. I have been trying ro increase engagement. He kind of gets tired after a few minutes or bored, not sure. How can I resolve that on games? I am trying to find about balabanov games, but couldn't find good videos yet

So my GSD outs the toy on her own when using 2 of the same toy. Sometimes she grabs them both at the same time though if I don't pick the other one up immediately. Should I say out immediately on a return of a toy if she is dropping it anyhow? I think I wasn't using the verbal out. Or well drop it in my case. What would be a physical correction if she tries to grab the toys when ending the game? Her obedience is pretty good. Usually I just let her carry them to the vehicle and she drops them on the seat and I put them away then, and buckle her up it's not a problem exactly. I have been working on putting her in a down or a sit to try to get her to stop crying and pulling to the field. It seems to help a little. Shes a handful though! Thanks for the video!

Robert, what kind of tug toy do you use? Where do you get it?
@kicknadeadcat

In the beginning I would coax my dog with treats. If he brought me the tug and dropped it in my hand, I would exchange a treat. This worked great. Treats are no longer necessary now. Now what I’m working on is him differentiating other objects and bringing them to me. I started with sticks. I rub the sticks with a little meat and then put them on the rail of the deck. The meat scent made it easier for him to get excited about it. Now if I place three or four sticks on the rail he will bring them to me as I ask one by one. Next I’m going to try to different objects and ask him to differentiate between them and bring them to me as I ask for them.

My GSD perfers the tennis ball and she want to keep chewing a long time before she spits it out. Would you advise to take that away and use tug toy only for her to let go of the tug toy and then the command "out" on all toys later? I love Goofy..he is one attentive partner and doesn't get goofed up very often from what I see. Thanks Robert!

@@RobertCabralDogs Your absolutely correct however in my case after having 6 GSD with tennis balls they are supervised and the balls are thrown away once they start poping indicating a break before the covering breaks. Some dogs will break apart and eat the parts which is definitely dangerous for the dogs digestive system and possible death. I take the ball away after play. I was referring to the length of time in the dogs mouth to the "out" command. My dog just holds in the mouth longer to let go.

If aaaanyone can help me out please! I have a 1 year old working line gsd. I can play tug with him exactly as in the video, he ignores the toy when i say no, I can put it in his mouth and he doesnt bite it. BUT, when it comes to throwing the same toy or any toy, he will give it back normally most of the times, UNTIL out of the blue he decides he wont anymore. He comes to me, I can grab it, but he will NEVER release it. When i say never, its never, he doesnt care about treats he doesn't care about anything in the world. This happens at different times, might be at the start of the game might be later on. Even Worse is any kind of ball which he will never release anyway. He seems so obsessed with balls that i just stopped having balls as toys completely 4 months ago. Any tips? I would appreciate it so much as I have tried so many things and nothing seems to change this obsession of his. Thank you!

The item belongs to the person. The dog is a lower animal. The dog is the property of the person. Those who insist that is 'being mean' do not think clearly. Dogs WANT and NEED a leader. That is how Man developed dogs over thousands of years. A dog has no resentment or grudge.... they cannot. They are dogs. They are not human or even close to primates or dolphins/whales
