Everyone has a different style and some are naturally better at explaining others. I have had people sit in and watch and tell me that I might consider taking less. Guess what? The owners still don't listen. So I took a class. Check out Toastmasters in your area. What I learned was to get more information, in a more concise way, in a shorter time. Also, reading the listener. If you watch, you can tell when the person you are speaking to has checked out. Keep it shorter, and avoid it. Because, after they "check out", they aren't really listening any longer.

In my humble opinion, thee BEST channel in your field. I'm a disabled combat veteran with a 5 yr. old GSD/Malionis as my service dog. We were first paired when she was about 1yr. and she is the best thing to have ever happened in my life. The service dog organization that paired me with back in CA was very old school in their training as the CEO/founder was a former K9 handler in the Army. After graduating from their program - over 200 hrs. logged at the training facility and 700 + hours outside/home over the course of 2 yrs. - I eventually learned that the program that DC (Damage Control) my service dog and I went through could of been much more productive with other training methods. If you are familiar with "old school" training mixed with a military mindset then you will know what I'm talking about. Now, I'm helping my parents train a puppy Sable Shepard to be my mothers mobility service dog. I remember all of the mistakes I had made with my girl and I always send them to your channel because even though I have some experience, I am by far, not an expert and your material and training methods are top notch. I just wish that I knew of your channel when I first started out. Thank you.

Completely content, because this man is clearly their leader & provides structure, boundaries, expectations & is unwavering. Jeje Wa I spend 7 days training the 10 commands I teach ( companion training ) it takes me a full day to teach the owners then even with the commands all printed out with detailed hand leash and verbal ommands the call me saying he won’t sit or one of the other commands! They have to come to my shop and within minutes they say or signal the same commands I’ve just walked with their dog and he’s perfect! They don’t use the same commands I taught them and the dog! It’s easy to train the dog! It’s hard to train the owner!!

When he said that "sit" really loud the GSD looked at him like "What the hell Robert, I thought we were better than this" & then at the end when he was talking about having nothing else to do but train and how passionate he was and how it meant so much to him, the same Dog (Goofy), turned and watched him, like "this is my favorite part of the story" and it was almost as if he was just admiring Mr. Cabral. "yet" is a powerful little word!! I use it for encouragement when working with both animals and people, including myself. Instead of "I can't do this!" I think "I haven't done it YET". My lab pup has learned SO much so quickly, but just could not/would not manage a "stand"... I could lure her forward from a down or sit, and knows "wait" in down and sit, but she just would not stop moving forward and wait in stand (yet). At almost 8 months, she is finally understanding as we practice stand/wait/fold-down. 👏👏👏 BTW I never noticed the fold-down as a "thing" till watching Goofy in the box. Thanks for that!

Robert has become our primary mentor for training. I'm struggling with leash training a little Jackchi that I rescued. I have to use a harness on her because if I hooked the leash to her collar, she'd break her neck if she saw a bird, or squirrel. She's good about stepping into the harness; and is smart as a whip. I'm just not doing it correctly; I realize now that I'm not being consistent enough. I'll be watching your videos on leash training; and continue to train. It's quite rewarding to see the results. I think that she saved me just as much, if not more, than I saved her. Prior to your saying "consistency", I wanted finish your sentence with "discipline". I would say that the discipline is the condition precedent for consistency. Your video pertains not just to dog training but anything in our lives: parenting, friendship, marriage and our approach to our work or vocational endeavors. Mistakes are the bedrock not of our failures but our successes so long as we learn from them and accept them as part of the learning to mastery process. I started watching your videos to help with training my in-laws dog when we have to watch her because they've never trained her to do anything but go for car rides. She completely rules their house and is treated like a child who needs treats for just being there. 2 months ago i got an 18 month old border collie, a rescue, it had completely shut down. The first two weeks it would not even take a treat off me, ive been watching your vids and been patient with the dog and treated it well and it slowly bonded with me and is now a million miles away from two months ago it heels off leash, sits lays down gives me a paw and has also gone into sheep dog mode so i use my older dog as the sheep and it circles clockwise and anti clockwise on command. I have booked us on a sheepdog course to get him on real sheep next month. i cant thankyou enough your training vids are brilliant the change in this dog is remarkable and the change in me also. lots of dog walkers where i train him are commenting on the difference in just a few weeks and its all down to your training methods, they really work well on the dogs and the owners.

What he says here is absolutely true. I use to breed (very limited) shepherds, and so loved them.) One thing, that use to drive me crazy was when I was bringing their food to them they would be jumping all over and sometimes knocking over the food bowl before I could place the bowl, so that problem became one of the most important thing, to me, to address in their training . It is important that your dog watches you for direction. That is a good dog. Anyway, back to the food thing. I would have them sit and wait until I told them Ok to eat. At first when I was working on this particular thing, when I leaned down to place the food bowl on the ground/floor they thought it was ok to eat, but not so, if they started to get to their food while the bowl was still in my hand I promptly brought the food bowl back up so they had to wait until they were fully still, completely, and looking to me for direction, if they start the same thing, I would do this over and over again until they realize their moves didn't work in their favor. IMPORTANT, I NEVER veered from that routine, it WORKS, but only if you do this EVERY time. This helps the dog to look for their cue from you to go ahead, with whatever word you choose to use each time. It also teaches them to be patient. This only works if you do this EVERYTIME, EVERYTIME, EVERYTIME. I can't say this enough, just as the video stresses. Unfortunately, if other people, family members who ever may feed them, it is near impossible to get this thru to them. This takes a lot off of you to have them co-operate with you. Just know they are going to test you, so be ready when you bring the bowl half way down, they are probably going to go for it before you are able to sit the bowl down. So, it is so important to immediately bring the bowl back up until they are PERFECTLY STILL for a few seconds. You don't want to have to try and dodge their head when trying to put the bowl down. They should wait until you have stood up completely, and WAIT until you give them, the WORD, and even wait several seconds before you give the WORD. Well, that is my tip, and I just learned this going down the road training my own dogs. . Best to all! P.S Sorry this is so long.

Consistency is one of the many skills training dogs has taught me. Whenever the training is "not working", the first thing I work on is how consistent I'm being. I'm a drummer and the ONLY way to get better is tedious repetition of the same exercise until the muscle memory is built up. I'll spend hours doing the same action thousands and thousands of times until the strokes are even and consistent. Some techniques take months and months of regular practice to get.

I knew a girl years ago who lacked patience and tried to train a new puppy in her life; she was a person who talks a lot and fast but for love or money couldn’t even train her dog to sit. One day I bet her $5 that she in fact had done it, she took the bet and then I won by mimicking her saying “sit,sit,sit,Sit!” and the dog sat... she had accidentally taught the pooch only sit if the word was said 4 times fast and the last was louder. It was amusing and a bit of learning curve for her.

It's like you're reading my mind! I tell clients this all the time! Most people aren't patient. I tell them use the same word or phrase. Everyone in the family has to use the same words. Potty training: use the same word take them out the same times out the same door. Especially until they "get it". I'm so consistent in my personal life I drive those around me nuts! Workout three times a week, same days each week. Food, too. So, I hear ya!

Being present. I think is more important than emphasizing consistent and patient, (although they go hand in hand - can’t have one without the other. ) Just reminding people that they need to live in the now and get out of their distracted human brain. I tell people to learn to use their animal brain and pay attention to everything in their environment-especially their dog. Having faith is important. I always repeat that old saying that it is always darkest just before the dawn. Just when you are sure you will never succeed with your dog is right when your dog is about to have a breakthrough. Laser focus and do not give up!

Thank you sir! This was great advice. I am guilty of my puppy only listening when I repeat commands, and you are exactly right I need more patience. Because when I DO only say the command once in just my regular voice, he usually listens just very delayed. It’s like he’s thinking or waiting for me to repeat it! And as far as consistency, I didn’t know that’s what dog trainers meant by “consistency.” By being consistent in your every day life, not just your dogs routine. My 17 week old golden pup knows my routine and I am very consistent with it, but I can work on being even more predictable also.

Hey Robert, i am a German Doghandler who works in Schutzhund Sport. I handle a Dutch Shepard and an German Shepard....i saw this video and you for the first time. What you say is what i now deep in my mind........but..... is it so easy? Humans are so complex ......i think it is so important to bring yourself in the right constitution befor you start training with your dog´s. It isn´t so easy when your day goes wrong befor you had a hard day at work and all that stuff...... Sometimes i ask myself after a good and also after a not so good training, what was the differnce, why the training runs one day good and the other day not??? The answer is everytime the same....it´s me and my constitiution during the training. So i try to bring me in the right emotion.......switch to a good mode.............i try. I ask someone ,2 times Worldchampion in Schutzhundsport (Peter Scherk) " Peter what are you doing when you have a bad day?" Don´t start and stay at home?? He answer: I start with easy thinks where i now that my dog do this very well.....mostly after that it brings my a smile in my face and the training is runing.....

I’m becoming a dog trainer and I think the hardest thing for me to grasp, and this video helped so much to explain it, was what consistency really meant, including how tone of voice has to truly be the same every time I give the cue. that is a great way of stating this. I make this mistake too often. I had one of my dogs that only did the command when I said RFN after the command and looking back to me it meant sit I mean it but the dog was always waiting for me to say RFN, it was like the release command yes now you can sit. I would have guessed you were younger Robert, I know I have aged 10 years in the past 3 years since losing my leg and lack of sleep.

This is key as you say to anything in lie we want to accomplish! I'm a professional network marketer by trade and the key to success there is consistency. My 4 month old GSD we brought home at 8 1/2 weeks. Everyday at all 3 meals the first half of her kibble is used or training, consistently. She can already do all the basic commands like sit, come, down heel. But she will also shake hands when I say "pleased to meet you", she will weave thru my legs as I walk and she'll come right beside me when I say "right here". Robert you are spot on in your approach. I really enjoy these videos and have saved a number of them for future reference. I agree with 99% of everything. Really the only thing I have a issue with is tone. I agree that during training tone should always be consistent. But a dog can sense intent, urgency, pleasure or displeasure if you use different tones.

You always seem to post a video exactly when i need it 😂 ive literally just figured this out. I put way too much expectation on my pup, got very frustrated and in the end i almost quit, and because i too have been doing martial arts for years i thougt screw it i wont give up ill just change my approach. In the last two weeks my dog is a completely different dog, she is happier, im happier and her work is benefiting from it also.

Thank you so much!!! We have had three bully breeds and they were all very friendly…. Out American Bulldog we raised from a pup and she was wonderful, the other 2 were rescue Pittie mixes and they were awesome also 🥰 Our Bulldog Bella learned basic commands, but the rescues I guess we were just happy that they loved people. But we just got a year and a half Pittie mix, and I REALLY wanna make sure he’s well mannered and great on a leash. Found your videos and I’m so glad I did! He’s great with people but definitely needs manners
