How to engineer a racing intake

When designing the custom cooling system and air intake for our LokJaw, our SEMA truck, Gale Banks drew inspiration from our race trucks of the past. The Ram-Air design utilizes air pressure created by forward movement to feed the engine as well as cooling the heat exchangers. This means the faster the truck goes, the more heat can be drawn out of the cooling system and the more air mass is forced into the intake before being compressed further in LokJaw’s 3.8L Whipple supercharger. We utilize Ram-Air in everything from land-speed streamliners to tow-worthy road trucks.

I remember when Yamaha change their motorcros bike the YZ-250 and 450, they put the admision in the front of the bike and the exhaust behind the motor, and that increases the power significantly just by getting cold air and air under pressure in the front of the bike.

I have an 07 N54 335i. Both charge air filter cones are inside the engine bay where 😮the hottest air is. Seems to me the original air box was a better design. It was catching forced air from right up front. Seeing your videos has let me know I’m thinking right. It does have an intercooler though.

Looks like the ram air system on the 87 I-ROC Camaro that I had. The only issue I had was the fog lights were mounted in the intake port on the front end, so I removed them and got the air flowing a lot better.

You guy are so good at what you do. I was thinking about a way to make a custom ram air for my cold air intake. I thought it would be cool to have a ram vent on the passenger side corner of the hood. Can i just cut a vent in my hood and put a nice looking vent or snorkel? Its an 09 ram trx4. I want to give it some one of a kind upgrades. And i like to tinker, tho im definitely a novice, hence, me asking the best lol Edit: the intake filter is located right in that corner so my thinking is getting fresh ram air forcing that air intake. I have a flow master exhaust and it was tuned a long while before I got it.

I recall reading an article about a 90s Kawasaki zx-11 ,and they were getting around 1/2 pound of pressure at around 150mph in the air box. If you can build it in(ram air) why leave it on the table?

It's odd, if I'm understanding this correctly, they have the air intakes on the other side of the radiator; which means it is taking in hot air, especially when not continously moving. Perhaps the heat is relatively insignificant?

It seems like they’re hitting the button would be a totally different type of surprise, and I don’t know painful deceleration as opposed to something breaking, ignoring something like a driveline or something but I would be very curious to get some feedback on that in a comment or video on what the differences feel like and so on!!!

Your ram air is more efficient then a nascar style cowl? I heard that because of aerodynamics and pressure blah blah, at 200 mph they register positive boost on the cowl area.

Im not building a racing truck, but I am restoring my 87 toyota pickup to be a very comfortable daily. The stock air intake on the 22r goes from the carb on the left side of the motor, over the valve cover and to the right side of the engine bay, then up to the grill. I want to get a weber carb then modify some old air cleaner housing to fit, make it run from the carb straight up to the grill, that way the air isnt heated by the valve cover as it passes through, plus the air will have much less resistance throughout the intake.

The exit is the same It is in every radiator. There goes out the back. It's not a sealed air box. The walls of the air box are the radiator and charge air coolers

I am pretty sure the whole idea of “ram air”, especially when dealing with a very large opening like the grill + being used to feed heat exchangers, is kind of outdated … depending on speed ofc. The air that is going in needs to exit somewhere otherwise you’re just going to end up lifting the front end at speed… Having the intakes at the grill is probably mostly ok, because the car should already be designed to evacuate that incoming air flow, but by doing so the whole “positive pressure” for the intakes kind of gets negated. + at a certain point the force of incoming air can’t overcome the pressure in the intake and just spills out. Look at what goes on with F1 intakes & why they are where they are. And if you have turbos how beneficial is a “ram air” effect really?
