Thanks for your erudition, dude. I’ve been searching You Tube for years to augment my aviation education and though many instructors out there provide lots of good information, virtually all of them, real and sim pilots alike, never reach the level of “teacher,” which is one who assumes nothing and thinks like a philosopher-meaning he or she can anticipate misunderstand-and thus tailors in-depth instruction in ways that unable most people to learn. Well-great video. You top the X Plane instructors, who assume too much and speak a bit inarticulately at times. Much appreciated, and as Scott Manley says, “Fly Safe!”

Actually, watching you again, a suspicion of mine was confirmed: I thought you had said “waypoint” several times-so “fix” must have some special meaning. Aren’t they NDBs?

Hi Carl, Unfortunately I get mixed up using these terms. As I understand it a waypoint is just a "place" you head to during the course of a flight. It can be anything you can identify either visually during VFR flights or a coordinate you entered into a your GPS. I tend to interchange waypoint and checkpoint sometimes in my explanations, again unfortunately. A fix, again as I understand it, is a specific longitude/latitude "location" found on IFR charts that you can enter into your GPS, they are represented by a little Diamond and have a specific name such as "DUMBA" a fix south of Francisco airport KSFO found on the their approach plate. NDB is a Non Directional Beacon, it's like a radio station you listen to in your car, it doesn't send any information or receive information however you can tune, then "dial" your NDB receiver to that station and get a heading to fly to that station. In the early days pilots tuned their NBD radios into regular broadcast radio stations where they knew the location of the station and they could listen to music as they flew towards the station. NDBs basically are "better" than nothing, you can be led astray with the signals as they bounce of buildings and mountains etc. so you could be flying directly into a mountain thinking you are heading to a station!! Hope this helps, thanks for watching :-) Blessings, skip

Where are getting that map from ? I'm using Little NavMap to create flight plans which sure is helpful for low altitude flying in high ground areas. My biggest problem to date is in the King Air with the G530 and trying to get AP to take the airplane. FP is all locked in but clicking AP ENG(age) doesn't hand control over to the airplane. Not sure if that's a software bug but can't find anyone else raising the issue soooo.... Have you done ILS Approach training ??? I love your videos as you are thorough and do them at a speed my brain operates at.

Hi, Skip. Just a quick question. How do you delete a saved flight plan from the catalogue? I can delete the flight plan from the "active flight plan" window by hitting "menu> delete flight plan". But after deleting it, if I check the catalogue window it is still there. If I highlight it in the catalogue window and hit menu, nothing happens. Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave, When you delete a flight plan in the Garmin it just deletes the plan from the Garmin not from your list of available plans. To delete it from your list go to where X Plane is installed on your computer. For a Windows computer if you installed X Plane on your desktop the path would be desktop/X Plane/Output/FMS plans. In the FMS plans folder are all you flight plans, just select the plan files you want to delete and delete away. Blessings, skip

Let me get this straight, When your at the Flight plan area, you put in the airport your taking off from, then the waypoints, then the airport you want to end up at, and then you go into the menu and you Activate Leg? correct?
@WEHVideos8 жыл бұрын
Hi Ki, Yes that's it. After takeoff, and when it's safe to engage the Garmin 530, if the flight plan page is not displayed click the FPL button. Then you will see a magenta arrow pointing to the waypoint the Garmin will fly to if you activate the flight plan. Make sure the arrow is pointing to the waypoint you want to fly to then click the MENU button. The first option should be "Activate Leg?", click the ENT button and your flight plan is ready but not engaged. Now depending on which airplane you are flying, you will need to turn on the Autopilot, Select GPS for navigation source (NAV1, NAV2, GPS), and then activate the AP, usually by clicking on the NAV or LOC button depending again on the airplane you are flying. If you want to choose a different waypoint then, with the flight plan page open, click on the PUCH CRSR button to highlight the first waypoint in the flight plan. Then click on the right side of the large knob to go down till you get the waypoint you want to activate. Then click the MENU button and then ENT to activate the new waypoint. Happy Flying! @WEHVideos8 жыл бұрын
+Rodney lake Hi Rodney, To open an existing flight plan that you made you click on the FPL button on the 530 which opens the flight plan page. To find your flight plans use the RIGHT side inner knob clicking on the RIGHT side of the knob, this will bring up all your flight plans. Use the RIGHT side Big knob to scroll through the plans, click the ENT button to select the highlighted plan. If you don't see any of your plans or some are missing then they are no longer compatible with the version of the Garmin 530 you are running. X Plane upgrades the Garmin from time to time and sometimes you will find your old flight plans are no longer working so you will have to start over :-( Here's a tip. Open an airplane with an FMC and enter the flight plan there. Then open the plan in your airplane with the 530, should work just fine. Hope this helped. Blessings, skip

@WEHVideos3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Sorry you are having trouble with this I know it can be very frustrating! What airplane are you flying? There are different ways to activate the Autopilot in different airplanes. There are usually two things you need to set for the Autopilot to function like you want. You need to know how to select which "source" for the Autopilot you want to use such at NAV1, NAV2, or GPS. For the Garmin 530 to follow your flight plan this selector switch must be set to GPS. On the G530 there's a button labeled CDI on the bottom left. When clicking this button you are switching between using the NAV radios to GPS so make sure GPS is displayed above the button and not VLOC. Watch the video below it might help, let me know how it goes :-) (You can find the G530 manual in your X-Plane 11 folder in a folder called instructions.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoKthaB_fL2fr8k Blessings, skip

Hi Mike, Really sorry for this late response seems a bunch of comments got lost somehow and just showed up today :-( I agree the sim can be frustrating and and more difficult that the real thing but hang in there, what airplane are you trying to use the Garimin in and are you using X-Plane 11maybe I can figure it out !?? @mikejw582 жыл бұрын
@@WEHVideos Thanks Skip. No problem at all. I appreciate all that you do to help people with your videos. I dont have a lot of time to spend on simming so maybe thats the biggest factor but even if I had the time I would still probably do what I've been doing and thats to walk away once the frustration starts. When I see "kids" flying 777's and I cant even master the 172, something is wrong. I haven't flown real world in a while but when I did I trained and rented a Piper Warrior PA28. At one point I bought a PA28 from Carenado for X-Plane 11and it was great. But then after one update it no longer ran on X-Plane. They said an update was coming but never did. Once again, frustration! I looked high and low for another Warrior to buy but there is no good ones out there. The ones I did find were horrible. I understand that the Piper is not as popular as the 172 but it is still used in a lot of flight schools. You can buy just about every plane imaginable but not a warrior, or not a good one like Carenado had I just dont get it. So now I just use the standard C172 with the steam gauges. I even looked into those screen sharing tutor services but let me not spend an hour talking about how frustrating that was. PilotEdge used to offer that service but discontinued it. Some of the other services out there want more money then a real world instructor. VatSim is just way too hard to schedule flights. I would pay for an instructor but I dont have a lot of confidence I will get a lot out of it. Anyway, I think I will just leave the flight simming to the computer techs out there that have a lot of time on their hands. Thanks for all your help!

I was lucky to find the 172N I use in my videos years ago but it's no longer available or supported so eventually will be obsolete as simulators improve, I'll be stuck in the past I guess. I really hate to see you give up so if you would like to Zoom with me and can put your camera on the monitor so I can see what you are doing I would like to try and help, not sure how doing this with Zoom will work but we can try.
