How to Enter and Exit a Dual Carriageway via Slip Roads | Driving Lesson with Sophie

How to drive on a dual carriageway for the first time is what we are going to be covering with Sophie today on her driving lesson. We will be entering the dual carriageway via a slip road(acceleration lane). We will also be leaving the dual carriageway via a slip road(deceleration lane). we will cover good lane discipline and keeping a safe distance from the cars in front on you. We will also cover on the dual carriageway how to how to change lanes and over take cars safely and what to watch out for on a dual carriageway.

I remember my first drive on a dual carriageway, it was a little nerve wrecking but also exciting at the same time!

Mine was terrifying. Was joining from a roundabout, not a slip road and the left lane was partially flooded at the start of the dual carriageway. Was looking to move out to avoid it, but was overtaken so ended up going through it, sending a wall of water 10ft high and lost a bit of grip.

I think a good guide to whether your joining speed is reasonable is to notice the last vehicle to go past as you join. If this vehicle is disappearing into the distance very markedly your speed too slow and the rate at which that vehicle gets ahead is an indicator of how slow your speed is for the situation. The next vehicle is likely travelling at the same speed as the one disappearing into the distance. That is an indication as to how rapidly you might be caught up.

Another useful video as always, Mr T. Thank you, Sir. I remember my first dual carriageway lesson. There were nerves, but at the same time, I knew the lesson would help me. Going up to 60-70 mph from slower speeds felt unusual and even coming off the carriageway felt that way, too; 40 mph felt like 20 mph after doing 70 mph. Match the speed then it's no use doing 70 when they are at 45 and vice versa. Then ideally have yourself parallel to a gap travelling at the same speed then either check by leaning forward or glance over your shoulder that no 1 is filling the gap they shouldn't but some people do and merge on. If busy aim for the first half of a gap and if too close to the car on front can let the gap grow. Never be besides someone on the slip road and try to race past them to get in front. Ease a little and slot in behind. As going down the slip road keep glancing right and looking for a gap you can take safely or would like to. It means you have a plan what you want to do instead of get to the line oh dam panic hit the brakes and stop. It's very rare to need to do emergency stop at the line . Most people will assist you to get on by changing lanes or making sure you have a gap but they don't need to

Sophie is doing fine. So lets learn some Road Rules for UK together i don´t wanna suicide, hurt or worstcase killing anyone on my Honda. Anything mandatory changed for Motorways or can i use the Motorway Playlist Travis?

A lot of the Motorway rules are common sense. But a few rules that does catch lots of drivers out are: If a RED CROSS appears above a lane, you mush not drive down it. You must not drive in the middle lane if the left is clear to move into. The hard shoulder on the old style motorways is for emergency breakdowns only. You must keep a 2 second gap from the car in front of you.

A generally good video James and Sophie. I like your style James. I obviously don’t know your vehicle and I teach automatic anyway. However on joining the carriageway and building up speed on the slip road to a speed similar to those in lane 1, could Sophie of block changed from 3rd to 5th gear missing out 4th.
