"How to Video" with Eli Elfassy Sensei.
How to build your own home made Makiwara
Materials you will need :
1 Rubber car tire.
4 screws 8/10 Mm in diameter
4-8 rings of metal (that fits the screws)
1 martial arts belt / 1 industrial rubber size 25 X 20 CM / other padding
1 or 2 a strong tape.
1 board (made out off good wood).
1 Leather cover of professional Makiware / Or other
Before you start you will need to :
1 Use a driller and drill 4 holes in the board
1 Drill 4 fitting holes on the tire.
( I think 8 Mm or 10 Mm will be good).
1 knife in case that holes in tire are not big enough.
1 8/10 Mm tool to close the screws in different angles.

attach the top and bottom of tire to a garden fence 4x4 post with the same bolts and place a plastic cover over the leather to protect it from the elements

This is a great idea!! I don't why I didn't think of this. This makes an excellent makiwara, and the tire gives and flexes while it's being hit. I think you could also mount this to a wall to eliminate having someone hold it for you. This is great. I'm going to put one of these together immediately. Thank you for this video.

Thank you, sensei, so much for this video; one suggestion I would make to everyone is to buy a good quality hardwood (in California, we have lots of oak), or ash or whatever local hardwoods you have; it will make sure your makiwara endures. DON'T save a few pennies by buying cheap pine, or some other soft wood; you will be sorry later when it cracks, and you have to do a major rebuild...

I think the wood I used it is Tectona grandis. 11 years did not break or crack.. And I found it used.

Wow. Impressive giving construction instructions in English! I am lucky enough to speak two languages with technical skill but only because I grew up around both and my Dad had technical training in both as well. The languages I learned on my own or in school where totally lacking those words and skills. So it is impressive to see someone do that with out specific training! You did such a good job explaining that I am sure my Mother could build your creative and low cost design!!! The word for those large metal round things in English is "flat washer=singular flat washers=plural" Thanks for posting I am going to make one my Dad gave me an old tire I use to throw footballs through I can use it!!!

I can't mount it, because the Dojo is old, the walls are really weak.. And I don't own the place I rent it.... So my equipment is not fixed (It is in another room). Thank you, It is me punching. I try my best.

Thanks for this. I used a similar build for the makiwara board, but wanted to use by myself. Have a sparring partner dummy and used the back of this with the help of a bungie cord and strapped it to this. I also wrapped mine in tarpaulin material similar to that used on kick bags to protect it. Works well as the sparring partner dummy creates the spring needed. p.s off to Japan and Okinawa in October for 11 days to train with some of the masters in Shotokan and Goju Ryu Karate-do.

Great job making the makiwara so cheaply. I've been looking to make myself and my dojo a makiwara to improve our punching technique. I also recognize your dan-belt in Goju-Ryu. I congratulate you; my form, Isshin-Ryu, is partially derived from your style. For future reference, those screws are called bolts, the little shaped ring that screws on is a nut, and the ring is a washer. If you use those again, it may help your video's audience to understand your instructions better.

Hi emanuel teseira! It's been succesful but you have to look for a good wood (beech, for example). I used pine and it's not very good because it doesn't absorbe the impact, it comes back to the fist. ;)

Ok this is great but when you put this spare back on your car doesn't the board make for a ruff ride? Just kidding! I have been using a tire for years set up very similar to yours. I also have mounted a tire and wrapped it with rope and punch/strike it. Depending on the tire you get some nice resistance. Nice video by the way.

would it give an equivalent resistance to real ground mounted makiwara? Feels like tire might have too little flexibility, if you mount it on the wall and end up being same as simple wood makiwara mounted straight to the wall

I did not have a wall to mount it on. What you say is right ... But we found 2 tires that were softer. We are still using this one..
