I think there's one deck which needs two of the MDFC, the deck I'm talking about is Yuriko and the two MDFC are: - "Clearwater Pathway": Yurikoh needs to guarantee a turn 1 creature drop which can be black or blue, and this land is gonna be often better than a basic in the wrong color. - "Sea Gate Restoration": a 7 CMC bolt land is just what Yuriko needs!!! ;D Not running them would be a mistake imho.

I would like to counter challenge Matt's challenge being Butcher of Malakir and that counter point is budget. I know, as a Korvold player myself, that Dictate of Erebos and Gravepact are better, mana efficiency, but the price is not to the reach of everyone. That's why I believe butcher of Malakir is "Overplayed"

I have to hard disagree about the battlebond lands being anywhere near budget. Morphic pool is already 22 dollars and they will only go up the longer they go without a reprint, meaning they will go from currently shockland or really ally fetch pricing to likely pre double masters filterland pricing. And with that, the new dual cycle is amazing for any kind of agro deck or a deck just splashing one of its colors, and outside that they will end up hurting you late game. Have a very important place but will never be real staples

There was an analysis that said that the MDFCs are like 2/3 of a land so for every 3 you have in your deck, you can take out 2 lands. That seems about right to me; of course Im not sure this holds if you go nuts and run every single one, but I think as a rubric it works

You guys are turning into one of the best podcasts out there mainly due to your quality conversation, keep it up guys! I like your thought process in regards to the modal cards. I think I like agadeem's awakening in my Meren deck as a finisher/value engine... but am pretty meh on the others. Many MTG personalities are saying to replace your basics, and I think that's the wrong side of the fence. Replace a spell, so now the spell needs to stand independent of the land side, which is the gravy. The dual flip lands belong in 2 color decks only, and this boils down to my River of tears argument. Don't look at it as a dual, but rather a island with upside. In deck construction it gets placed in after the duals... so the card was always a island (side A), but if you need heavy black colored mana at that point, now with the mfdc, you get the almost free choice for the game to say you drew a swamp instead.

One good thing with the ones that are a spell on one side and land on the other side is if you have a way to bounce a land you could use both sides that way

I feel like they could of mentioned that if you have a commander or a deck that likes to bounce lands or (this being alot but doing ability above and play lands from the grave. I could understand playing more of these if you can pull that all off. So play these lands early and use them for spells later in the game. But that's a lot to hope for.

I added Agadeem's Awakening into my Sidisi deck. I have both Ramunap Excavator and World Shaper in that deck and never run into mana issues in my play group. I cast Agadeem's for 10 the turn after a board wipe and pulled Stitcher's Supplier, Apprentice Necromancer, Fleshbag Marauder, Sidisi Brood Tyrant (my commander), Syr Konrad the Grim, Izoni Thousand-Eyed, and Butcher of Malakir from my Graveyard. My Path of Discovery and Embalmer's Tools were both still on the field, so choosing the right order in which to activate the effects was key, but it was basically game over.

1:00:37 28 lands with 20 ramp cards is actually a valid mana base in Commander. We can often replace a land with a ramp card, and the deck will perform better (the 38 lands + 10 ramp cards are fine, but most of the time it is better to run 33 lands and 15 ramp cards instead). The only exception is if we have a high mana curve.

I think you make a great point about not taking out lands for the modal double faced cards (MDFCs). As someone who is a 36 land evangelist, I believe that it is important to have a minimum threshold of lands. This is especially true for those who like to use ramp cards that search out basics or lands with specific types. It feels bad to fail to find a land because you took out basics for these lands. Don't be that guy or gal! I personally recommend using the MDFCs to add consistency to your deck. This allows me to play 40 "lands" without having to feel like I am giving up a lot of spells to do so. Cards like Valakut Awakening and Bala Ged Recovery are great because they are effects you would already be playing. I think that a player is foolish to substitute these directly for regular lands. Maybe if you want to add 6 to a deck go to 34 regular lands and 6 of these MDFCs. At very least switch out 50% spells 50% lands when adding these cards to a deck. Example 3 for land slots and 3 for spell slots. Any more is just asking for trouble IMO. Do remember these slow down your tempo. They also get rid of lands that would allow cards like the check lands, battle lands, and reveal lands. Don't shoot yourself in the foot!

I'm not running many MDFCs in my decks, but the ones I am putting in are the ones that I intend to play as a land 95% of the time, with the spell side as a game-winning or emergency option if I topdeck it late in the game. Because that's how I'm approaching putting them in the deck at all, and because it's only one or two cards per deck, I'm putting them in land slots right now.

True but you could need the land side to build your board in order to use another fight spell later. Most of the playable land MDFC's are worth playing over a basic land just because they are extra spells later on, taking a land slot for an extra spell is great diversity

Other cost of the modal lands: If you have something like Mulch, that gives you lands, it'll get a bit worse if you jam 4-6 different modal cards. Now, that can also be a benefit if you run instant/sorcery/creature matters effects, you'll be more likely to hit a card with a helpful effect.

There are other win cons, but they are not as fun. I like the idea have lands that don't count as lands to make the Charbelcher better. Have to disagree on the dual faced land/spell cards, especially the mythic / rare ones. I think they're excellent spells given that they fit the deck you are building around. 48:30 ok, while I do agree that player would like to hold them to cast them that is not the correct mentallity. it is what players would do' but it is not correct. As both a cedh player and a casual player, the idea of playing these instead of a spell is wrong' because as a spell these are not that good. The green is not enough cards off the top, the blue is bad (since if you need to draw a lot of cards it means you have no hand so you don't draw a lot of cards), the black one is too high of a mana cost if you want true value off of it (also you want to return multiple big stuff and not 1 big one and a bunch of medium to small ones), the red is too bad of a removal and the white one is just not good. However, when I look on these as lands they make sense in 1 or 2 color decks as you run a bunch of basics, which means that replacing one shouldn't hurt that much, espacially as these enter untapped. But as I said, it needs to come with a mentallity of "This is a land. Not a big spell. The only time this is a big spell is in a top deck. This is a land". And as you play with this mindset, these kind of make sense even in some cedh scenes. Like the blue one actually makes sense inside a kinnan deck for example.

Idk how I feel about that Butcher of Malakir CTS...I know the guys aren’t elitist or anything but I think budget is a consideration as far as getting that effect, 0.94 vs $6 vs $17 is significant. The question should be is that effect worth running at all independently of similar cards. I’m also not sure why the uncommon flip land cards aren’t held to the same logic as the mythic ones, don’t you also want to save those cards for those spells and therefore be hesitant to use them for land drops like they said about the mythics?
@danaroach29
@danaroach29 4 жыл бұрын
The argument is some of the non-mythics are good enough to run as spells, that maybe can be lands if you need them, vs the mythics where the spell-side isn't generally anything good enough to run spell-side up. They're lands that might be a spell, vs spells that might be a land, or at least that's how we separated them in our minds.
@danaroach29
@danaroach29 4 жыл бұрын
I will note that I think the more competitive your meta the better the mythics get, because the three life is largely irrelevant in an environment where everyone tends to die simultaneously regardless of their life total. There the opportunity cost of paying three life is largely nothing. They're just ETB untapped basics that could maybe be a spell. It's probably all upside there, even if the spell is mediocre.

Question: How do these cards count towards X instant/sorcery/create/lands mechanics? For example you play one of these as an instant and goes into graveyard, you have a creature that says X/X lands on battlefield + graveyard and a creature with X/3 instant + sorceries in graveyard, how do you account these? And does it matter how they were cast before entering the battlefield?

They are only ever one card type, and that’s the front-facing one. If they’re played as a land, they are a land and not a spell. If they are in the graveyard, they are not a land card. I feel conflicted about the mythic MDFC lands. On one hand, they're reasonable lands that help you always hit your drops that aren't completely garbage when you draw them late, but on the other, the spells just aren't all that exciting in a vacuum. Personally, I think Turntimber and Agadeem's effects are good enough in creature decks to add that little bit of consistency and flexibility, I think they'll feel pretty good in practice.

I hear the using a spell slot for the double faced lands argument and for commander decks that use huge top ends that makes sense, but for any low to the ground deck a land past 5 is a dead draw. The point of running 36 (I run 33 normally for the 33% draw) is that statistically you want your opening hand to contain enough lands to get off the ground. Also I would run these spells if they were more interesting, they just feel lack luster to me.

most utility lands aren't easily fetchable. I think only being able to choose one mode with these new lands is not that big of a deal once your mana gets past a certain point in games and I personally like them better than check lands. Those only come into play untapped if you have a corresponding basic where as these always come into play untapped. restricted fast mana is better than versatile mana. Actually sit down and evaluate just how often you NEED a dual land to develop both mana types. Early to mid game only.

I haven’t watched the entire video yet, so I may have to delete this if it’s been addressed. It’s not that I’m necessarily unwilling to pay the amount of mana for an effect, it’s whether the effect - alone - is worth a card slot.

Can someone help me out and tell me what I'm supposed to do please? Much love! You guys have honestly improved my play so much in the few weeks that I've binged pretty much your entire backlog. Would really love to participate in this giveaway

The modal dual lands i wouldn't mind putting then in the place of a basic land, but the others untapped dual lands are surely better and priority picks in face of these modal lands.

@chrislloyd4388

I think you guys are really underrating the power of the modal lands that can come in untapped. They take up a single land slot for a potentially huge payoff, or they are just another land. A single basic land that acts as an extra spell that just takes up a land slot is just too powerful to ignore. Being able bolt yourself to have that land come into play untapped when you need it to is just another potential game winning advantage these cards have. Coming in untapped is just huge. Turn 1 plays being enabled by a 7 mana spell is absurd.
@derekludwig3945

I think you're probably looking at modal duals the wrong way if you're comparing them to single-faced duals. Yes, a traditional dual is probably going to be better once its cost is paid, but these should be compared to basics, as Dana did, since they have no further cost whatsoever beyond losing the basic type. If you don't have or can't spare a basic slot because of the way your deck works, don't run the modal dual. That simple. Otherwise, it's free real estate. Well, unless the single price settles somewhere ridiculous.
@derekludwig3945
@derekludwig3945 4 жыл бұрын
Consider also the set we're in. It's a great time to be building around lands, and in some cases, these will be objectively better than a single-faced dual. For example, I'm wishing Jund had gotten the full treatment this time around, since I'm working on a Windgrace deck that wants lands constantly moving in all directions between hand, battlefield, and graveyard. I can tap a modal immediately and repeatedly for whichever color I want because I can move it for free, getting value with each zone change, whereas most single-faced duals are going to tax me in some way each time if I move them from the battlefield and replay them. That's an edge case, I think, but so is being worried about pulling out one Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, or Forest to get the in-game choice of "almost either" of two of them.

Not really a fan of the CTS this time around. Butcher seems like a pretty obvious trade that's likely held back by budget and the red card kind of ignores some of the points this episode is making on modal cards. 4 Mana to destroy a creature, artifact or land?? I also wish CTS had four cards talked about, one for each of the cast and one chosen by the community through a submission

I think the decision as to whether you place MDFCs in spell or land slots is determined by the deck. In commander, being a hundred card singleton format, even tuned decks tend to be prone to the occasional mana issue. Some decks are more prone to flood and others to screw. It may sound crazy to go down to 28 lands and a bunch of MDFCs but if you deck is prone to flood, it may not be. Similarly going up to 50 lands sounds bizarre, outside of landfall of course, but it might not be if your deck is more prone to screw. Decks which require very little mana to do their thing, and have limited land tutoring, like mono not-green for the most part, tend to be more prone to flood since you have to play a large amount of lands just to get the few land drops you need. But also decks that require massive amounts of mana to do their thing but only have the one thing, mainly colorless, and some mono green also suffer from this problem. Conversely decks which require a large density of spells to function, require a large amount of different mana colors, or have a high number of moving parts tend to be more susceptible to mana screw. I can't think of specific colors at the moment but I tend to see this most when in more casual combo decks and things like equipment decks because they require lands creatures and equipment to work.

I feel like the mythic 2 sided cards are good in a land slot in 2 color decks. In 2 color decks you won't run as many other shocks so the 3 life is less important and the lack of fixing is not an issue either. Particularly though the blue one feels like it is a card I would play without the land side.

I think they’re off on how to treat the mythic modal spells. I think those SHOULD replace a land slot, while the ones that enter tapped should be spell slots. I think the mythic ones are obscenely good - almost no opportunity cost for running them over a basic of the same type. Obviously, the more colors you run the worse they become, but for mono colored and duo colored decks I think they’re basically free includes.

The missed opportunity with the modal duals was that they should have been basic lands and hence fetchable, walkable, etc... as is, like they mentioned they are fairly weak and really only useful as puntual replacement for one basic land in a 2 color deck
@Murrdurrurr
@Murrdurrurr 4 жыл бұрын
You guys are totally wrong about the Mythic modal lands. You made a big point about the Rare and Uncommon cycle taking a spell slot, and quoted some "intelligent guy" saying that they are spell slots in standard. That makes sense for Standard where 3 life is a real cost, but the huge advantage for the Mythics is that they 100% do take a land slot in EDH. You're playing them as lands over 75% (Maybe even like 90%) of the time. There's next to no cost in EDH for playing them untapped. If you're life is too low, then the odds of you actually needing a spell that affects the board go up, or you can still just play them tapped as an absolute fail-case. Not being basic is a miniscule downside in most decks. Joey has has Cabal Coffers bias. Most two-color or mono decks have room for these. Compare them to any teir-2 nonbasic land that taps for colored mana (or colorless ones like Reliquary Tower). Now imagine instead of that decent little effect, that land had "7 Mana, discard this card: LARGE EFFECT NOW" if you're desperate. It hits on a different axis than every other nonbasic, while also being perfectly satisfiable as a land. I don't know how you can say that a land that enters the battlefield untapped and adds colored mana doesn't take up a land slot. If you were to see it as such, then you'd realize that having a big, janky spell on the back is very good for when you're in a pinch. I don't think it's right to assume that players are going to foolishly hold on to them as spells when the land drop helps them. Ironically, I also think you're overhyping the Uncommon and Rare cycles, excluding the one or two that are basically best-in-class spells. They're probably still good, but the Mythics are doing something better because of the land slot thing. All five Mythics are guaranteed EDH staples on the level of Teferi's Protection, where price will be the only reason to exclude them.. While the others will be played in specific decks.

I can't believe the Pathway discussion. How many basics are you running in 3C? I run like 10-15. Swap out some basics for Pathways! You won't fail to find basic land types because you still have 7-12 in the deck. It IS a strict upgrade unless you are constantly facing Blood Moon and all the other situational situations you brought up. They are just strictly better! Why would you need to fetch them? You can fetch the other 20-30 lands no problem. The typical deck won't ever run out of those
