How to execute and make things happen is the set of skills needed to turn ideas into reality. Many businesses place too much emphasis on those with good ideas which is maybe 5-10% of a solution and don’t emphasis the execution skills needed to turn ideas into concreate action and results - the 90%+ of the solution and the hard part.
In this video I share 8 key practical steps that will help you significantly improve how to execute and make things happen personally and through your teams.
Getting Teams to deliver consistently is hard work if you don’t know how approach the task. Execution or making things happen in the workplace is not taught as such. The first step is to understand your team - what can they do and what can’t they do. Next work to get the right people in your team which makes your life as a manager a lot easier.
Understanding what your goals are, communicating your goals and getting all stakeholders aligned and agreed with those goals is another vital step.
Managing the team so there are clear owners for each step in the project or activity that you need to deliver, visibility of progress and the right support for each team member are also vital steps.
And finally, following-up so that you are signalling how important the project is through your actions and also being able to proactively support and help were needed is a step that managers rarely do enough of.

Well thought out summary. It's always good to give examples so the information doesn't come across as platitudes. Fast is good (duh)! Agile software engineers are very familiar with the waterfall trap. All that linear, straightforward planning can get you into trouble. Quality has two components: conformance to specification and customer value (satisfaction). Waterfall is very good at the first but oblivious to the second. You can make seven fingered gloves exactly to specification and make one customer deliriously happy, but the rest won't care. No customer value. That is why early beta testing is so important. Make sure your customer will actually get value out of your product. Read "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries. Secondly, do you know the difference between the PE teacher who coaches football and the English teach? The football coach is judged strictly by how well his team does. He doesn't play in the game. The better skills he creates in his players, the better off he is. The English teacher is judged by his/her Master's degree or PhD and years of seniority. So, create the best players and give all the credit to them when they succeed. Believe me, you'll share in it. This creates a team spirit and motivated individuals. Every football player is volunteering for heavy extra work. Always ask "Does this create customer value?"
