HOW TO: Thermal Heat insulation (ceramic wool + stainless shield spot welding)
You always see the big tuners with very expensive high end car running these very cool looking insulated exhaust. How do the do it and what is used.
We are all familiar with the shield bands that are put around the exhaust. This is helping for sure. But in the engine bay you want to keep as much heat in the exhaust as possible. So i did some research because the end result also looked very cool and nice.
I used a material from a company in germany. called HJS. THis company has dealers that will sell this product for them. I bought a set with partnumber 83000027 This is 1m2 of ceramic wool 5mm and 1m2 of stainless hammerd shield of 0,1mm
The wool has a sticky side and can put on the exhaust and will stay on. works very good. After this the big puzzle begins to get the stainless sheets on the exhaust.
I have searched and got a mig welder. and used this without a welding wire. So i can spot weld with the machine. The biggest problem is find the right settings and best way to weld it together without burning a hole in the sheets. I started with the manifold which where the hardest to do. maybe not the best idea. After this i did the connection pipe between left and right bank. This was already much better. i think it is a learning process. Earth connection to the material is very important.
if there are any question just ask

Thats a nice technique, I use a spot welder that is used by panel beaters and do a good job aswell, also you don't risk burning holes through.

Hello, will doing this lead to premature cracking on the pipes or welds? Also, do you cover the welds we’re the flanges meet or attach it before the welds? I have all upgraded pipes but would you recommend doing this for a daily driven car? Thank you

I have a carbon steel manifold . So this less able to crank then stainless steel. But this is the first time in using this . The flanges are not covered otherwise you can not use them anymore. This is also a streetcar.

Ive not done a ton of mig, what tip are you using on your mig welder? Also thanks so much for posting this video. Ive been considering doing the same thing for a while, but have been scared to spend the money with out any idea of success.

The material using to cover the pipes. When doing yourself is not really more expensive the heat wrap. But it is just a long job to do. I used a modified plasma cutter tip or a modified tip from the mig welder

Hi, just took my first attempt at this, and have to say it, this video was PRICELEEEEES!!! Watched it like 9 times in the last few months. Golden, thank you! One question tho. Why the plasma cutter tip? The MIG, copper one, seems to work just fine. Although I've only made a few spots for now, still testing. Maybe it will wear itself out after one hour of wraping? Thanks, Your biggest fan

Hello, I do this job professionally. There is something I am curious about. I would appreciate it if you could clarify. What is the amperage range of this machine (parkside), for example, does it start from 30 amps? As far as I can see, you are doing continuous spot welding. Does it allow continuous welding?
@JMSpeedshop
@JMSpeedshop Ай бұрын
I just use a very simple mig machine and i can not adjust anything i just put it to 15 amps . That is the lowest setting . Next time i do this i will use a battery spot welder i think

I am not a welder or ever welded anything, but been curious to try this on my headers for a long time. Also curious if you have considered or tried to use the electro chemical weld cleaning to clean the seams you tack welded to clean off the browning and make the seam look cleaner? Not saying it looks bad and in the end if you are happy with it, that is all that matter, mentioning out of curiosity if it would work and perhaps you did not consider it. Thanks for sharing your process.

Have you meanwhile found an alternative for buying extra stainless steel? Even thicker than that 0.1mm maybe? It would really be of help to find a source for that.
