Watching this video on the M1 Macbook Pro's display. The colors and the dynamic range look so vivid and real. Agree with you that the quality of the HDR content is may be not a huge leap in the perceived image quality, but the feeling that you get from an HDR video can't be faked with an SDR one. HDR looks definitely more life like.

For anyone using a mac with an xdr display, you can check the high dynamic range option with standard in blender, and it will stop anything from blowing out. This in my opinion is better than Agx. And if you check preferences with command comma. Go to general, and check use mac color display for color profiles. I also checked use 10-bit pricision if available, but this lets you color grade the correct colors in davinci resolve. Only on mac though.

6:08 KZbin Shorts *does* display in HDR. To verify, set your M1 Display to HDR video, and it's very easy to see which ones are HDR. Also, right-click on a short > Stats for nerds, and you'll see the Color info to verify HDR status (as it doesn't display a HDR tag, like it does for longform video).

I'm not sure if I understood you correctly but I can see the difference like night and day when viewing HDR content on an HDR1000 display. It's awesome. Playing SDR content on an active HDR display is so much dimmer and more washed out that I would need to turn off HDR on the monitor to have the video look a lot better. However, the screen is still much dimmer.

Hey dude, love your videos but I got triggered by the comments about not being able to look at the correct colors in Resolve. You just have to know what color space you are working in and what your output is. I would suggest that you turn off automatic color management and instead use Color Space Transforms on a clip level in the color tab to convert each clip from their source space into Davinci resolve color space and log intermediates, then do your grading in that space and at the end you can output to whatever you want. If you are working on an sRGB SDR monitor you should use that output, then everything will display correctly. Change the output to HLG and rec2020 color space on export
@Polyfjord6 ай бұрын
This is incorrect. You simply cannot grade HDR content accurately in an SDR environment. I understand it's tempting to tweak color management settings, but nothing beats a real HDR preview. I recommend that you try it yourself, because it's one of those things one has to experience to truly understand it.

@AndreeMarkefors7 ай бұрын
Thanks! But I don't quite get the "you will struggle to tell the difference between SDR and HDR" statement. It's night and day... If you have a SDR and HDR TV side by side every single person would immediately see the difference and be able to accurately answer "what's the difference between the images here?". And: when you show the wipe between SDR and HDR at around 0:54 BOTH sides are showing in HDR, so I'm not sure what you are "comparing" here. Anyway, using Color Management in Resolve and setting it to HDR will produce an HDR file as long as you export it to something compatible like h.265 10bit.
@phildavison3197 ай бұрын
I understand that the difference between H.264, which Blender uses, and H.265, which it doesn't, is put simplistically that H.265 can work on smaller blocks. Is there also a difference in the dynamic range? Also, have you looked at AV1? That's an open source codec which is supposedly better than H.265 in that it has a better compression algorithm. Blender supports AV1. Again, I don't know what the dynamic range is or whether the codec actually affects it at all. Thanks for your time.

@HaightNojam3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the great video! One question, is it correct that both EXR and PNG are exported in sRGB, and then you do the color grading in DaVinci or iPhone to fit the highlights and high saturation colors to Rec.2020? (I've heard that Blender is internally calculating in sRGB only, I wonder if this is the reason.) I'm using a translator, so there might be some mistranslation, sorry in advance. Sorry for the long comment!

I am having trouble getting Resolve to do a workflow 2000 nits [or over 1000 nits maybe 4000?] (From Blender AgX EXRs). I test with QCTools (which has a graph display bug were you need two clips loading to get the range to update to 1K). The Resolve Display Scope (Style now set '...' in scope viewer) seems to only change the range of marks and has nothing to do with the data show so basically just percent so it's not representative of the actual values either. Anyway feels like another video is needed if you can figure any of that 'over 1000 nits workflow]. Thanks for the useful information in this one. I think I see now MP4 H.265 can not handle it, but MOV (DNxHR) can! Sadly it's a huge file though. I think maybe it was to be 12 bit so that makes sense. [Note the QCTool bug went away then too.]

Only thing is. iPhone is a 10 bit screen, the shinobi isn’t, it’s a 8 + 2. It’s better to use a LUT on a small HD screen an compress it to 709 to grade using a LUT. Then export it. However the HLG thing I didn’t know of…worth trying.
@Polyfjord6 ай бұрын
The Shinobi uses FRC to emulate 10-bits by quickly jumping between colors. It behaves extremely close to a true 10-bit display, and you won't be able to tell the difference. LUTs are great for previewing, but it wouldn't use it while grading if that's what you mean
6 ай бұрын
@@Polyfjord sorry, but your really do. The Shinobi is at best a 8 bit panel on steroids. I calibrate panels and the gamut coverage and gamma is close to what SmallHD had 4 years ago. There is a reason why a proper 10-bit monitor from flanders cost a A LOT more. Also, after testing your video, and HLG myself. I found no browser on my MacBook M1 Pro that could illustrate it properly, the only one that could was my TV, and my iPhone. All other devices I checked clipped, or just sent a muted SDR version.
6 ай бұрын
@@Polyfjord as for LUT. It is just a look up table, numbers. When I exported to PQ I had a LUT converting 709 to 2020, which of course didn’t work 100%, but on a 8 bit panel you can make one for highlights, then one for shadows and just flip in between 😇

🎉 Fantastic break down on your process. Are you going to stick with hdr or not worth the extra time and effort for KZbin? If not are you sticking to exr for sdr content? Or still converting them to png? If so what's your process for converting exr to png before sending them through DaVinci resolve? Maybe make a short for the exr conversion?

I like that the gradients are really smooth in 10-bit! But yeah It's a little bit extra work, I think I'm maybe spending 2-3 hours extra per video to make them HDR.
