I think the most important thing to take away from this video is that both exposures work well. When some people prefer one, and some, the other, it clearly means there is no definite right or wrong. Far more important is appreciating the quality of these amazing cameras, and being grateful that we have such relatively easy access to such powerful , and forgiving tools. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Wow, great video - thanks a lot for taking time to do this. I'm a PHOTOGRAPHER with the occasional video project and I just borrowed an FX3 to test it out. Even though I've been shooting PICTURES since 1996, I find my self having a steeeeep learning curve with Slog3. I bought the Phantom Luts and tried out CineEI on the FX3. It seems that the creator of Phantom Luts tells us to not overexpose because the newer sensors doesn't need to be (compared to earlier sensors).

I appreciate you dedicating multiple videos to the Phantom LUTs. I picked them up after seeing your first video, and it's great to have more info about lowlight and grading with them.

My 2 cents- no.2 skin has more detail, while no.1 looks smeared. The night shot, I actually preferred the lower exposure; the lut result reminded me of film, while the higher exposure resulted in a more digital look.

I use Phantom LUTs and tend to only overexpose (whole scene metering) by a stop, maybe less. I do use a monitor tho and check waveforms and false colour. Shooting weddings I make sure the dress is fine and dark suit isn't a crushed mess. I've found when I started and was over exposing more towards 2 stops everything was too bright and required a lot of pulling down. When I dropped it a stop or more it feels more to my liking as soon as the LUT goes on. It does depend on the scene and whether bright sun or overcast which obviously creates a difference in shadows.

Thank you for the video. Quick question. When using SLOG3 and Phantom Luts do I need to convert the footage to Rec 709 first and then drop a phantom LUT on or can I just slap one directly onto the SLOG3 footage? Thank you I shoot on Sony A7IV and use Divinci Resolve 18

Thanks for this video. I’m new to shooting slog3, and I’m using the phantom luts. My skin tones using zebras at the recommended 53 +-3 look good, but my landscape shots at 93+ look way over exposed. They’re not peaking when brought into premiere, but the footage is so bright and washed out looking, and it only looks good when bringing down the exposure in post, or shadows, or whites. Why do people recommend shooting with zebras at 93+ for landscape when it’s just so crazy bright? With Joel’s Phantom Luts, I thought he says you should be able to just drop them on and be good for the most part, but having to bring down a lot of parameters in post after correctly exposing using zebras has me being confused.

the technology has improved in the meantime (almost 3 years). With the A7S3 there is dual ISO: this means that I use ISO 640 for SLOG3 for daylight shots and ISO 12800 for low light (note: ISO 10'000 has noise / 12800 has no noise). And I never overexpose (so not +1.7stops). The waveform is still in a range where corrections are possible. I also use phantom Luts für SLog3 (e.g. Arri Alexa neutral). Since the post is almost 3 years old, I don't expect to get an answer.

Great advice thank you! Do you think exposure really matters if you're able tweak it plus highlights, shadows, mid tones etc in post? Generally speaking, I've always set exposure depending on the scene. Have I been doing it wrong?
@SparkFosterFilms
@SparkFosterFilms 3 жыл бұрын
Unlike the traditional Rec709 gamma curve (which preserves shadow detail but blows out highlights easily) the S-Log3 gamma behaves more like film, in that it is very good at preserving highlights but it loses shadow detail more easily. For this reason, it is safe to overexpose S-Log3 by 1 or 2 stops, but S-Log3 should not be underexposed. There is nothing wrong with exposing S-Log3 with a "correct" exposure. This can be achieved by setting zebras to 70% (this corresponds to 100% in Rec709) and not going above that, or by using a standard Rec709 LUT (like S-Log3 Assist feature built into some Sony cameras) and simply exposing by eye (what looks good to you). You will get usable results this way. However, to get the cleanest image out of S-Log3, you should overexpose by 1-2 stops. This is because S-Log3 is noisy in the shadow areas. If you overexpose slightly and then lower the shadows in post, you are able to crush out a lot of that noise, resulting in a cleaner image. However, if you underexpose S-Log3 and you need to raise the shadows in post, that noise will become very apparent. Let's say you have a scene that's supposed to look dark. You could expose it the way you want it to look, but if you are using the S-Log3 gamma, you are gonna get a ton of noise in those shadows. You would be better off exposing it brighter than you want it to look, and then darkening it in post when you do your color grade - this way you can lower the shadows and crush out a lot of the noise. In short, S-Log3 will produce great results when you expose anywhere in the range from "correct" exposure (70 IRE white point) to 1-2 stops overexposed. But you should never, ever, under-expose S-Log3. As long as you err on the side of over-exposing, you will find S-Log3 to be very forgiving especially if you are using a 10-bit codec. 8-bit codecs will all apart more easily when subjected to heavy grading, so you should expose more carefully with them. The Phantom LUTs are set up to assume you are overexposing slightly, so if you expose "normally" and then apply a Phantom LUT, it'll look a bit dark. The benefit of this is, if you use Phantom LUTs in your monitor while shooting, and you simply expose by eye (what looks good to you), then you are getting all the benefits of over-exposing your footage without even realizing it. So the Phantom LUTs do simplify the process in this regard.

Do the Phantom Luts work when shot in Cine4?

These LUTs are specifically designed for use with SLOG-2 and 3 to "decode" the flat log profile. Because of this, they don't really work with other profiles.

The answers here are wrong. The Phantom LUTS come with both Cine and Slog 2 / 3 versions. They are, however, massively overrated, and suck. The highlights blow out almost every time, and the colors are not as great as people claim.

@@HarvVideoAudioStuff I am sorry, I didn’t even look at the date! Completely my fault in that one, I do apologize. It is interesting how we all see things so different. For instance, in the video of you talking, you liked the extra contrast and punch, and I saw where the dark sun your hair were really crushed, but in the darker exposed clip, I could see the detail in the shadows in your hair. Again, all personal taste, just I retesting. Once again, I do apologize for jumping on something and not checking when the original post was made.
