My pro tip that has helped me stay vegan for almost 8 years now is: to stop expecting food to taste, look or feel like animal products, either processed or whole foods, and just embrace new flavors and new textures, as long as they taste and look delicious to me, i'm good 👍🏼

I agree. That's even important to me as a relatively new vegan. But here in my country we have some very good local brands. They come very close.
@tofu-munchingCoalition.ofChaos

What I would add though is, that I look for a replacement. Something which is nutritionally close and can be used similarly. But it does not need to be equivalent in taste and texture. For example: Tofu scramble instead of egg scramble, fried mung been purée instead of omletts, tofu fermented with yoghurt cultures (balsamic vinegar, tomatos) instead of mozartella (with balsamic vinegar, tomatos). Especially the last one is not even close in texture or taste to the animal product. But it has the same feel to it and better nutrition.

Yes, I have been vegan for a year. I like meat, but I'm in love with plants and all the possibilities in vegan food. I have no need for meat. I made a creamy salad the other day and had a pinch of black salt in it thinking it would be a nice flavoir addition to the vegan mayo (which is delicious without black salt - I make my own and the household omnivores love it). I was almost disappointed because it tasted like actual eggs 😄 I love food and always loved vegetables, so I have no problem with not eating animal products. There's nothing bad about learning to appreciate "new: flavours and textures. On the contrary.

I actually find it odd that we don't eat meat because of animal suffering but try so hard to replicate the taste of animals. But that's just an unpopular opinion I guess 🤷‍♀️
@tofu-munchingCoalition.ofChaos
@tofu-munchingCoalition.ofChaos 3 жыл бұрын
@@missmisia222 What's odd about that? Taste replication does not induce suffering. The contrary is the case. The more good tasting and texture-like mock meat is cheap and available the more it's consumed by flexitarians and it's easier to switch from a standard diet to a vegan diet. So it reduces suffering. It was crituial in my transition. Now I consume very little processed mock meats. But because of their good influence on reducing animal suffering I regularly buy them and gift them to the "Tafel" (a place where people with money problems can buy cheaper food or get it for free and from the profit the organisation feeds homeless people). That way I support vegan options which help people to switch to a more plant based diet and help people in need.

I have been vegan for over a year now (vegetarian for many years before) and was just hiking for 3 days in Slovakia. It was very difficult to get any proper vegan food there and I had to deal with a lot of confusing looks. I think the key here is to remember WHY you are vegan and not let these inconveniences get to you. Luckily, I came prepared with some protein-rich snacks and supplements so I would still get my nutritional needs met these few days. It definitely made me appreciate having ready access to vegan options where I live :D

I found what works for me (vegan for almost 6 years) I base my diet on whole plant foods. I also add in a handful of fortified foods; plant milk, nutritional yeast, fortified whole grain bread etc. mock meats once or twice a week, and a multivitamin 4 to 6 times per week (I do my best to remember lol). I honestly don’t feel like I’m missing out at all. In a social situation I always bring one or two items to the bbq, or family gathering.

Pro tip: don’t expect to lose weight. 5-10 years ago I think vegans that transitioned would traditionally lose weight but all food was basically homemade except a white block of tofu that they had no idea what to do with. Now, there are so many replacements. Burgers, hotdogs, nuggets..etc. while these may have a lot of protein they are highly processed and should not be used in every meal. I have friends who go plant based for weight loss and they do not lose weight because they are consistently eating the processed vegan foods…

Some initial vegans may also lose weight due to losing muscle mass; they may eat mostly carbs while also being in a caloric deficit. Then they might later gain weight from being so hungry on that kind of diet and being in a deficit for too long; they will simply overeat or be in a calorie surplus. Lately I've been able to maintain a healthy weight and keep muscle by counting calories, lifting weights, and prioritizing including protein in my meals, which helps with satiety. All home cooked stuff too so I avoid the extra salt you get from store brought vegan protein. I cook lentils, different tofu recipes, and seitan.

I've never agreed with the "transitional food" thing with vegan meats and cheeses. So what if SOMETIMES I want a corn dog that isn't made from a carrot? lol or a Tofurkey sandwich instead of straight up veggies between bread. While I like to eat whole food plant based like 75% of the time, I think to stay vegan long term you have to allow yourself that flexibility.

"If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be food." what a strange way to look at it the only reason why processed junk is viewed as food is because it is advertised as food, in a parallel universe where processed junk doesn't exist or isn't labeled as food but something else, you'd go along with it pee also has nutritional value but isn't labeled as food but just because something is labeled food doesn't mean it is healthy processed meat is classified as group 1 carcinogen, same as tobacco and asbestos, just because something is labeled as food doesn't mean it's healthy that doesn't mean i'm against eating junk food but saying it provides nutritional value and ignoring to mention that those calories, fats and carbs in junk food are causing diseases also, judging food as good or bad, naughty or nice does not accurately describe them, and it's understandable why people don't like those words because they are often associated with religions and also classical conditioning when parenting (judging kids whether they are good kids or bad, naughty kids) more accurately would be to use words like healthy and unhealthy, health-promoting and disease-promoting

I've been vegan in a budget and living in a country with less than comforting weather (the UK) for years. My tips: - Take your supplements (even a multi for those of us who struggle with complex routines 👌🏻) - It's okay to eat junk food occasionally (it's comforting, warm and satisfying) - Bring your own snacks to parties unless you know for a FACT that there will be something there for you - If you invite friends over for food who are not sold on veganism, don't force them. Allow them to try what you've made, but don't be offended if they bring cheese to put on top your delicious vegan burrito or gorgeous pasta dish. That's their problem, their journey and it's not a failure on their part or on yours. - Show people how good your food is, don't tell them. At work, I always get complements on how good my food smells/looks and it starts a conversation. - You do NOT need to drink smoothies and juices to be a good vegan. On a cold, rainy day in the UK, the last thing I want for breakfast is a bloody smoothie. I want porridge and toast and a steaming cup of coffee, and that's okay. Do what makes you feel good. - Mock meats are very acceptable nowadays, and at least here in the UK they don't tend to contain any questionable ingredients. - And most importantly: if you want to go vegan but have THAT ONE FOOD that you just can't give up, don't give it up! It's so much better to reduce your intake and have a sustainable diet you can keep to than to give up something you love that you will later binge on and just give up all together. Hope this helps xoxo

Re: tip #4 -- strongly disagree with the second sentence. Why would you as a vegan allow animal products into your home, if you could help it? Don't put friendship over principles, if the latter is what your veganism is based on. If your friends can't respect your principles-let alone your cooking-then what kind of friends are they? At least maybe not ones worth inviting over to eat willy-nilly, yes? You don't need to resort to blow-out arguments, but if you are vegan out of principle, you should at least stand for it. You could say something to the effect of: 'This is what we are eating. If this is not acceptable, I would ask you to sit this one out, or perhaps I can serve you something else that you might find more agreeable; even if it's on a less than empty stomach.' You can give people options like this, without compromising on your principles, or on being inclusive.

@@mbp--- I'm a Buddhist - I just don't agree with forcing people to do anything. They are in a different place than I am and that's okay. To be honest, my parents and brother would bring their own food to "add" to mine and I'm not going to be bossing them about any time soon. I tell them I don't want them to do it, but I won't be forcing them. My brother still barely eats vegetables so veganism doesn't look to be anywhere on the horizon. I would rather have a lovely time with my brother than to obsess over the food he eats. I don't think eating animal products inherently makes you a bad person; there are many more serious ways in which friends can transgress moral boundaries with me but cheese isn't one. My partner isn't even vegan so we very occasionally do have animal products in the house. It's not ideal and it hardly makes me happy, but it does reduce some tension in our relationship. He eats vegan 99% of the time, with the occasional "treat". That's okay with me because I know it makes our shared diet more sustainable and manageable for him - he didn't decide to be vegan so I shouldn't expect him to live as a vegan 100% of the time. Reduction is still good.

can you make a video about why you *didn't* stop being vegan after realizing the way you had been eating (80/10/10) was bad for you? If I remember correctly, you had a slow transition to including more cooked foods but staying high carb, then eventually returning to a more normal vegan diet. I went through the same transition, from raw vegan to low-fat-whole-foods vegan to whatever-the-hell-I-want vegan. And every once in awhile I will have those conversations with someone who says "oh I know someone who got really sick on a vegan diet" and I'll say "I got sick too, I wasn't eating properly, but I changed my diet and now I feel great" and they are always a little mindblown that I'm still vegan when it made me sick. Not supplementing iron when I went vegan 5 years ago was my biggest mistake. 3 years in, my iron levels- which were already low due to genetics and my 12 years of being a vegetarian- had absolutely plummetted to just a couple points above the anaemic level. I wish I'd paid more attention to the fact that my body was screaming out for energy instead of trusting the hype about veganism being this perfect diet. Luckily, I came to my senses at that 3-year mark and have therefore stayed vegan. I am now just a vegan who isn't borderline narcoleptic. 😂

Also with 7), a significant number of ex-vegans stopped because they ate out with meat-eating friends a lot. I'm not 100% sure how to address this (aside from getting vegan friends), but it does suck looking up and negotiating restaurants that have good vegan options every time you want to hang out with friends.
@harmonicaveronica

I think it depends a lot on where you live too! Outside of cities you often get one kind of sad vegetarian option, and if you make it vegan by removing cheese or whatever it's literally just a handful of vegetables and maybe bread. It's probably best to switch to breakfast/brunch out in this situation because at the very least you can usually get oatmeal with fruit, which is very yummy!

Good friends tend to consider their vegan friend(s) though. They wouldn’t want to have a nice meal whilst their mate is stuck with a sad side salad (those ones made from a non-vegan perspective). I think it’s up to the vegan to educate their friends on what they (can) eat and find the places with good vegan options (or at least where one can easily make sth vegan like an Italian place). Occasionally the vegan may have to settle for fries, depending on the location. But if they are stuck with only omnivore-friendly options each time when there are other things available (if no restaurants, there’s always cooking together) then maybe those friends aren’t respecting their vegan friend enough to compromise and just go for a healthy vegan salad/bowl/curry place and maybe it’s time to stop eating out with those people.

I find it helpful to kind of keep a list handy of places that are vegan or have good vegan options in my area. So I don’t need to do as much research each time. Also knowing that some cultures have more vegan options and opting for those restaurants (Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, etc.)

I've teetered between vegetarian and vegan almost.. weekly. I found going veggie so easy... vegan? not so much. Through your channel, I've learned to not demonize the idea of TRANSITION. i've decided to teeter off non-meat animal products and it's helped so much. for about one year i did veg except for milk products. now i'm down to veg without the bug products. and im finding it easier and easier to imagine beng a TRUE vegan forever. if it had not been for your channel, it may have been that i would have never changed from vegetarian to vegan-ish. i feel like there needs to be more discussion into JUMPING into veganism. i appreciate you so damn much, swayze

I have a soy intolerance/allergy along with gastro issues that make it hard to eat a large amount of lentils and beans (and other foods like raw greens). So I try and focus more on WHERE those animal products come from, going local, and getting to know my farmers.

One pro tip: Get real clear on *WHY* you are vegan. If any part of the decision is ethical (for the animals, environmental ethics, etc.), remind yourself of this FREQUENTLY, especially at the beginning of the journey. This will help when you are tempted or wavering in your decision. The nutrition/food part comes with time, but this will go a long way if you are secure in your *WHY*. Promise 😊Great video!! We need room for all types within the community, including options for folks who want to occasionally, or just about always, eat not great foods. Regarding junk food, I just want to say, I’m in recovery from years of eating disorders and I have wanted to be vegan for years because of the animals…it is the value that fully aligns with what I believe in, and even when I was eating meat “for my health”, my values and my intuition had other things to say about it regarding consuming suffering, fear, and pain…anyway I’m grateful to have had recovery over the years and worked on my various issues behind binge eating and dieting and orthorexia…the food was always black and white and it was driven by poor body image mostly because I couldn’t accept not having a “perfect” body…all that loco stuff…BUT my point is that I’d always abandon veganism because I’d lump it into dieting, ie every time I tried to be vegan it was some kind of “health streak” like a raw cleanse or a super perfect meal plan, OR I would just be vegan and have NO concern for my health and was using veganism as some kind of restriction so that I could binge otherwise (vegan junk food)…today I’m at a place where I genuinely want to have and feel capable of having a normal, healthy relationship with food, and I want to be vegan for the ANIMALS. So if it’s for the animals, which it is for me, then obviously a sustainable lifestyle has to include junk foods, processed foods, etc. unless you think you’re going to eat a perfect diet for the rest of your life…then you’re just setting yourself up for failure and it’s so easy to say “f it” and fall off the vegan bandwagon. But vegan for me is for the animals, so that means I need to be able to set health goals, follow them, meet my needs, eat well, sometimes eat junk, do everything I need to do as a human, AS A VEGAN. I hope that makes sense. My point is, if you’re committed to veganism, you need to drop the restrictions and really let vegan be your new home - warts, different phases of your life, and all. If it’s for the animals, it’s not just a diet - it’s life. 🙏🏼🤍

Once i have recovered and am in a good mental state. I intend on eating plants only. I personally do not want to eat meat or dairy..but i can just not eat because it’s not what i prefer to eat.. I care about eating organic but it’s not health related to me, but rather environmental/political. Pesticides are seriously effing up our environment by contaminating our soil and water as well as harming insect life, and Monsanto is just so freaking evil, so I always try to make purchases that don’t support them (ex: purchasing organic produce form local farms). I don’t go crazy with it; if I really want to eat an imported fruit or if the only option at the store that day is non-organic, I won’t freak out or anything. I just make a conscious effort to buy responsibly when I can. Obviously not everyone can afford to do that but I think if you can it’s good to make an effort.

I can't go yet go vegan because of my financial situation but I'm trying to eat as little meat as possible. I'm not that big of a fan to start with. What I was wondering, because people (for a good reason) have divided opinions about it. I'm not sure how it's called in English, but best way to describe it - deep fried pork skin. Those parts are often thrown away and only few places sell them, so I was trying to go into the direction of if I have to buy meat then I'll buy something that animal wouldn't be killed for. If there was no market for other parts, no one would kill an animal for this particular part. Similar is chicken fat. That's something my granda makes for me so that I can have chicken soup but it's slow process with little gain since her chickens aren't fat. They are as free range as animal in captivity can be. Their routine is sleeping until they wake up, getting out of the coop to the yard (there's grass and parts with less grass, doing their chicken thing as much as they want to with access to the coop if they want to go there, getting fed with corn (and bough stuff that my granda can't grow on her own) that my granda grows (and it's cut into smaller chunks in a small mill machine my granda has). She also has 20 chickens max, so it's not any farm farm type of thing. They aren't getting that far with walking around all day (as much as they want to, they just don't fancy laying down too much lol) and they go to sleep when they decide to go in the coop. That's when coop is closed because - foxes! And I didn't mention water but they of course get fresh water couple a times a day with also getting fed. Anyway... My mentality from a vegan standpoint is flawed, I understand that you guys want to zero animal products to be used ever. So I'm happy that I found your chanel because I feel less attacked when I try to explain that I'm aware of situation being not what it should be but also not having financial means to do things the right way. Long time ago I watched a video of yours where you said something along the lines of harm reduction is one small small step and should be encouraged and people shouldn't be attacked to do more. I felt so much better hearing that because yes, situation is not ideal and attacking someone who is doing their best is not going to get them on your side, compliment small change and encourage them to do more. And hearing that you stand behind some situations where people can't be vegan was like - OMG someone is seeing poor people! Like I said, with poor financially situation and free eggs that my granda gives us, refusing to eat them would be 1) ungrateful (don't forget cultural aspect, not everyone is well off white US suburban family) and 2) instead of buying other ingredients we need, I would buy fake chicken meat? So idk... I'm trying to go in the direction of consuming even less meat (I really don't eat red meat that often) or if I do it's mostly traditional meals already made for my family. Maybe one day my financial situation and health would be in a place where I can comfortably switch to vegan food. Right now those are not excuses, it's just a reality for a lot of us.

I actually found out I had IBS when I tried to go vegan. I just never ate such a high amount of FODMAPs I'm sensitive to on a daily basis before going vegan. (Legumes are the main offenders)
@RosesAndIvy
@RosesAndIvy 2 жыл бұрын
It’s nearly impossible to eat healthy and low FODMAP on a vegan diet. Legumes are out except in very small quantities, onions and garlic are out so that excludes most faux meats. The only vegan sources of significant amounts of protein would be tofu and seitan. Seitan being pure gluten, while not a FODMAP, is often problematic for people with digestive issues, so that leaves only tofu. I suppose you could eat like that but I’m not sure it’s healthy to rely on only tofu as your source of protein, eating it multiple times a day every day. Either way it’s a good way to get sick of tofu very quickly I imagine
@nicolesapphire3696
@nicolesapphire3696 2 жыл бұрын
@@RosesAndIvy I think the thing to remember is in some cases a dietician will recommend a low FODMAP diet but just temporarily, so you could if it’s not long term be sustained by tofu and wheat gluten.
@19Thunderbird94
@19Thunderbird94 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicolesapphire3696 It depends on the individual. The goal of low Fodmap is to eliminate those foods and then reintroducing the one by one to see which ones you're sensitive to. Lactose is a fodmap for example but I have no issues with it. Onion and garlic I can do in small quantities. Legumes are a no go though. Some mock meats still give me diarrhea though, so there might be something else in there that my body doesn't like.

I read a popular book on transitioning to a vegan diet by a respected doctor, who said that if you eat a well balanced whole foods plant based diet, you don’t need a supplement besides B12. So, as I was eating a 100% WFPB diet with plenty of fats and protein and a variety of fruits and vegetables at the time, I stopped taking my multivitamin, and after a month my hair started falling out and I was always tired. I started back on my multivitamin and my hair stopped falling out and I felt better. I had a B12 deficiency as an omnivore and have had IBS for years. I think I have absorption problems, so no diet is going to work for me without supplements.

5:58 Vegan junk food, I agree. Just because it comes in a packet, tin or jar doesn’t mean it’s junk food. A case in point is falafel mix. If you look at the ingredient mix, some are convenience junk foods with all sorts of ingredients that make you think “why?”, but others contain exactly what you would expect and nothing more, just in a pre dried very convenient form. The weird thing is that it tends to be the fancier flavoured more expensive brands that contain things like wheat starch, emulsifiers, preservatives etc. I recommend, buy a good quality basic mix and add your own extra ingredient like grated carrot, chopped red pepper, chopped red onion etc, fresh flat leaf parsley, whatever you fancy.

Pro Tip: Have some tried and true quick recipes on deck that you can throw together with stuff already on hand. Like, right now it's 1 am and I am starving after being full through dinner. I tossed together a quick mac and cheese with penne, oat milk, nutritional yeast, a little earth's balance, seasonings (I added a dash of cinnamon, it's delicious) and a pinch of flour for thickening. It turned out delicious, quick, and easy. It keeps you from wanting to slide back to easy non-vegan options.

Cooked collards and kale are great for calcium. Their calcium much more absorbable than milk. You should have no problem with calcium when you include greens like these. I don't think people mention this enough. Especially when people think dairy is the best source of calcium.

I'd been vegan for 5 years and 2 months but I've had skin issues for about 2-3 years. Added a couple pieces of oily fish per week as per doctor recommendation about 2 months ago and my skin cleared up perfectly, but I feel awful eating it. I supplemented everything I should've needed to supplement, put everything in cronometer and I have no idea what was so lacking it was causing skin issues. Is it possible that absorption issues could be at play?
@Mb-sw5py

Did you take an EPA/DHA supplement before? Also could be that you were just not eating enough fat. “Skin issues” are very vague, that can be anything from dry, flaky skin to eczema to acne.
@ShadowCrystallux
@ShadowCrystallux 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mb-sw5py yeah, I did take one. It's a little vague because I had a whole host of issues; dry, flaky skin on my face and head, hands had mild eczema, severe acne on my back and mild skin peeling on my arms. It was at the point where I couldn't even shower without my skin having a flare up. Almost all the issues were gone after a month of adding small amounts of Salmon and Tuna to my diet as recommended by my doctor over the past, but I can't help but feel guilty. I had quite a high percentage of fat in my diet at the time (~30% of calories from fat, ~15% from protein), with good mixes of omega 3s and omega 6s. Wondering if there's a micronutrient high in oily fish which isn't readily available in most plant foods which helps with skin health other than omega 3s, but I haven't been able to work it out.

One of the easiest ways people fail on a vegan diet is thinking ad-hoc that it's healthier than everything else, just because. The reality I find is that it's rather difficult to both get all your required nutrients and to *tolerate what you're eating* in the long-term. It requires lots and lots of experimentation for your personal needs/tolerances. Whereas, the simple addition of a single animal product could make planning your meals extremely easy. She said ice cream has nothing, which is true when vegan, but with high quality milk/eggs, it's basically a superfood - for most people, meat and dairy are far from unhealthy. I think this might be the #1 thing that gives veganism a bad rap. You don't need to cope by searching for misinformation. Go vegan because it's ethical. Was this comment polemic? Idk, it might get deleted.

Thank you for sharing. I have been an "ex" omnivore for over 25 years and have never regretted my decision. Have I been through dietary improvements over the years? have i found my food choices were inadequate at times? Have I had symptoms of deficincies? YES, at times. So I changed my food choices for the healthier. The animal lives I have saved have been worth it, thats why I am a vegan. I now LOVE animals more than I did when I was an omnivore. But, society puts pressure on humans to conform and not be different. Most ex-vegans happen because they cannot handle the social pressures to continue being omnivore, and, because they did not do their homework beforehand about vegan.

Also cost. I know you can be vegan on a budget, but socially (eating out) that's a different story. There are way less restaurants that have vegan options that are worth it (I.e. they don't just give you a salad with no protein), and specialty vegan restaurants tend to be expensive.

@@vtheory7531 I understand. I dislike eating out for many reasons. I would rather just eat some fruit and nuts, or a smoothie. Most restaurants have no idea what healthy food is and also offer conventional GMO vegetables, grains, and beans. Most restaurants use awful seed oils and fry foods. Even indian restaurants, sadly, love to fry everything in oils. But some humans do not mind these issues.

I would add to your tip about vegan friends that having vegan family is really good too, my Mum and Aunt are vegan and it makes Christmas dinner, celebratory foods and eating much easier. Also, I understand the comment about transition foods in that it's important to look at a vegan diet as complete not as substitute meat and dairy meals, for example I prefer cashew cheese to dairy cheese because in itself it is a good food, not a 'substitute' for 'real cheese.'

I’m actually (mostly) vegan for the diet and the planet, more than the animals in particular. After reading ‘Healing and Prevention Through Nutrition’ by Evita Ochel (and getting some good cookbooks), shifting into the diet came easily and naturally to me. It feels and tastes great, and it became a whole new chapter in my kitchen. I ended up falling in love with cooking and with self care through feeding myself nutritiously and intentionally, it was a really pleasant process all around :) For those considering it, the starter cookbook combo that worked for me is: ‘Superfood Smoothies’ by Julia Morris, ‘One-Dish Vegan’ by Robin Robertson, ‘Plant-Based Dips n Dressing’ by Melissa Raimondi, and ‘A Busy Cooks Guide to Spices’ by Linda Murdock. Also- someone else commented this, but I have to echo the sentiment of it making more sense to create and embrace new foods and textures, rather than trying to recreate animal products. Also also- you can let a new diet build gradually, where new habits build and build and end up leaving less and less room for old ones. If this is a way of feeding yourself that you feel called to- enjoy the process! Feeding yourself, and learning how to feed yourself well, can be a joyful and loving act :)
