@ksmspeace 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-vq5nz6yk1h it doesn't apply to everything obviously, certainly not single gene disorders, but it is largely true for multifactorial diseases. It would also be more accurate to say environment rather than lifestyle - lifestyle is part of your environment, but it can also be things like viruses triggering autoimmune reactions or exposure to pollution - you need the exposure (to virus, pollution, saturated fat, a psychotropic drug, childhood trauma, etc) and also the genetics to react poorly to it. If there are risky exposures that you can limit by changing your lifestyle, it's a good idea to do so especially if you have personal or familial evidence that you might have vulnerable genetics.

His total cholesterol is still high. Sub 200 mg/dl is optimal. His LDL at 190 was very high where optimal is considered < 100 mg/dl. I struggled for years to keep my total below 220, even 100% plant based, so eventually went onto statins that brought everything into optimal in every measure. You actually want to have a total cholesterol below 150 ideally. A quarter of heart attacks still happen to folks with cholesterol below 200. Getting cholesterol below 150 without statins is very difficult to do on a standard western diet, even a good one. It usually requires adopting a Blue Zone or Vegan diet (even a vegetarian diet generally results in higher cholesterol due to the high consumption of cheese, which is mostly saturated fat).

We do not have the time to choose the best produce, given that we hardly have the time to choose *any* produce, in order to find everything in an order in time. It makes me so relieved when I hear someone say out loud the things I feel about animals. I don't have any vegan friends/family and my partner is an omnivore so I feel alone in my thoughts about veganism sometimes. I work as a librarian in an elementary school and I found this book about farms last week that gave me extreme propaganda vibes. The whole, "animals live on the farm and everyone is soooo happy" stuff. I didn't like this being given to our kids and it felt weird to shelve it away as if it were a normal book. To everyone in my life, that sounds extreme but it feels like you would understand.

@@Wwetitanfan27 I live in Europe where the strict controls on animal farming lead to far fewer problems than is seen in the rest of world. Hormones and antibiotics in feed are banned for general use and strictly regulated for vet approved use only, as are the living conditions for the animals. I don’t think US meat or poultry makes into our food chain for this reason. I live in a farming region (Jutland, Denmark) and I am absolutely certain the vast majority of animal farmers here look after their animals well. Danish beef is very high quality, but it is the most expensive meat one can buy here because the conditions for raising cattle are so high. Pork and chicken is also high quality, but they aren’t as expensive to farm as cattle, and Denmark has specialised in pig farming for many years. Maybe you are right for the US, I don’t know, but I am right for Europe.

I can't speak to what's occurring in Europe, but I have seen some Earthling Ed videos that have discussed happenings in Europe. Have you seen any of his videos? Also, I gather we'll disagree, but while I appreciate better quality of life, you're still taking someone's life away from them when you don't have to. And in the US, male cows and chickens are often killed AKA culled because they're not useful because they can't produce milk/eggs, and the females are killed once they are not as "productive". So even industries that are not meat result in death. Do you know if that happens in Europe?

@luke_fabis
@luke_fabis 2 жыл бұрын
Not a doctor, so don’t take this as medical advice. Just a couple of points to consider. If going plant-based doesn’t do it, you might need to up your cardio and work your butt off, each and every day. If it doesn’t drop your LDL, it’s at least likely to up your HDL, which is also good for long term heart health. And if that *still* doesn’t do it. Maybe give clean keto a try. Starving your body of carbs and forcing it to burn lipids *might* make it break down LDL. People on long-term keto (such as some epilepsy patients) tend to have good health outcomes as long as they eat their fruits and veggies. Of course, if going plant based did it for you, no need to try something else. Just stick to what works.

I'd give it a few months because it takes time for the gut microbiome to adjust, and this impacts cholesterol levels. Also, they have at-home test kits. I use the Curo L5 just to track my cholesterol after making dietary changes (I follow a plant-based diet also). If you live in an area with a lot of interesting, hippie-dippie small farms and agricultural co-ops, buying into a CSA is a great way to get fresh and varied produce, in-season and for a fair price. You’ll likely even get fruits and veggies that you just can’t find in stores. On the other hand, if all you have are big industrialized farms for miles and miles, a CSA subscription is probably going to be a scam. You’ll just get whatever crap would otherwise go to Walmart, but for a huge markup. Just something to look into if you are considering produce delivery. Sometimes, it actually does make sense. I’m not a doctor but the one thing I learned is the more information you give someone the more ways to try to argue it. Like if you give someone an itemized bill for a job you’re doing they will try to cut corners to break down the cost which means the quality won’t be as good or it won’t be safe

I didn't watch the original video, but did they really just kinda gloss over the saturated fats in animal products to highlight coconut oil of all things? It feels purposefully avoidant of animal product reduction to call out coconut oil by name - a substance that many use in minuscule quantities, if at all, but not any of the myriad of animal products that people feel compelled to include at every single sitting

Worked for Instacart at Wegmans. A lot of customers would say stuff like "I forgot to add bagels to my Walmart order" and ask me to grab some when basically the rest of their order is produce. Feel like that isn't a good sign for Walmart grocery delivery.

Yeah my worst experience with fresh produce has been with Walmart especially the one next to my house... I completely just stopped buying fresh produce from there because I don't think I ever got anything anymore that wasn't robbing or was bad when I opened it.

I would like to speak on the validity of using a fiber supplement as someone with ibs. I eat a lot of fiber but most of it is insoluble fiber due to my vegan diet but when I take a fiber supplement it actually does help my constipation because it's 100% soluble fiber.

Actually find the delivery of fresh produce really interesting. We have gotten our groceries delivered quite a few times even before the pandemic (live in Sweden) and I have never ever experienced the fresh produce being bad. I guess Sweden is quite good when it comes to this.

In the Netherlands all supermarkets do delivery and fresh produce is usually pretty good! But also, there is almost always a shop within 10min cycle. I think we do more small shopping trips compared to Americans. For us I think 1-4 times a week. But I could do a trip in literally 10min there and back, cause small supermarkets with loads of fresh produce are everywhere. In the US there are a lot more obesogenic environments.

Hey, that's very interesting what you say about produce delivery being low quality. It's the exact opposite where I live. Anytime I get a delivery, the produce is a really good quality because they know that once you make a bad experience you never order again.

I've bought good quality produce from Walmart, but I haven't had grocery delivery from them. I've also bought and had groceries delivered from Whole Foods and personally don't see the difference other than cost. Regardless, I mostly buy frozen vegetables and stick to fresh fruits, onions and potatoes to avoid wasting food.

11:50 In Australia I get my groceries delivered from woolworths around 6pm every fortnight and they pick the best fresh produce, better than I can pick I'm terrible at picking a good watermelon! We do have pretty high standards here when it comes to food down under. Given Mike is a successful dude, also highly assuming he probably lives in an upper class area. Chain stores can be surprisingly different depending on location. Me and my Mum sometimes drive to richer suburbs to get certain fancy items we can't find more local to us haha

@@rosemanning2508 100% with you on this. I've only really had one bad experience in Australia when I bought from a kinda pop up grocery store in the middle of a plaza. I was going through the checkout and the woman who owned it seemed super edgy and odd. Later when I bit into a protein ball I immediately could tell it was expired along with basically everything I bought hahahaha. Now I know why she was super on edge she was scared I'd discover it was expired before I checked out. But definitely never had bad produce in a main chain supermarket!

I've used Walmart drive up since the start of the pandemic (hadn't shopped there for 15+ years, I was wary). I've ordered potatoes, bananas, apples, and parsley fresh. Surprisingly-- only had problems a couple times, always with potatoes and twice damaged packages on silk yogurt and almond milk jug. Their refund process takes a few seconds with the app. But to play it safe, I get frozen produce whenever possible. I miss tomatoes. 😢

My first thoughts is that there can be degrees of bloating. His bloating might have been medium but settled down after 2-3 weeks on on plant-based. Where on vegan it might have been very bad and did not settle down.
@laranadesign4764
@laranadesign4764 2 жыл бұрын
The "plant-based" diet is the vegan diet, it just doesn't include the lifestyle part. Bloating can occur for different reasons, but try a probiotic to see if that helps. I switched overnight, but I was already a Flexitarian prior (ate meat, but only 1-3 times a week), so I was used to eating mostly plants already. If his bloating is due to the sudden spike in fiber, adding more gut flora to break it all down should resolve it. Again, could be something else (stress-induced, an allergy, etc.) so I can't say for sure this would resolve it for him, but it's an easy try to find out.

I don't know if it's that relevant since I live in Norway and we have different stores, but when I order food online from the shop there's a box where you can specify or comment on your order, so I always type that I want the produce to be in good condition and would rather have unripe than overripe items. The first time I tried to order, and didn't know about this "trick", the produce sucked - but every time I've specified I've never gotten as much as a brown banana. :)

I am one of those people who has the overproduction of cholesterol gene. I've been plant based for years and regularly exercising. Annoyingly my doctor ignored the "vegan" note on my chart and just told me to lay off the cheeseburgers every appointment for like 3 yrs then finally put me on a statin in my 20s bc I had LDL close to 200. Anyway, that's to say that we exist, so talk to your doc if your cholesterol is high even on a vegan diet. 😅

We have four grocery stores in our area where I shop ( I don't shop at ALDI's). Walmart has a crummy produce section. My daughter works there and she agrees that their produce section sucks. Krogers is better but it is hit and miss, nothing to shout about. Meijers is the next best but it is not A rated either. The best we have in our area is Fresh Thyme. Fresh Thyme is better than all the rest both in terms of freshness and selection. There is a Whole Foods but it is so far away that I don't shop there. I wish we had one closer. I have a garden in the summer and that is where I get some really good fresh produce. I am not vegan but I am emotionally sympathetic to veganism, but I just have not been able to make that switch. But even at that I do eat a lot of veggies and fruit and do cook some meatless meals.
