I really liked this video! Simple but packed. I was just telling myself to change my clothes and do a little skincare because I constantly wear my pajamas all day, face and lips dry, feeling like a little dust bunny unearthed from decades past. So now I feel less dusty, more bunny 🐰

"I'm short, i have a pixie, I'm a little androgynous looking... sometimes i feel like i can look like a little boy." It's the first time I've heard a make up artist say something like that and seriously, it makes me feel a whole lot less alone about it, because I feel that way too having a pixie, being short and a bit androgynous. Thank you for being so transparent and natural. In another one of your videos you said that we shouldn't feel pressure to follow the makeup trends either but rather go for what suits us and it was another break for me, because none of those things fit me and I used to feel bad about my appearance. Thank you thank you for the zero click bait and the honesty of your work.

I don't wanna be mean or anything but this reminds me how it's a bit funny when cis people experience moments like this, of what is basically gender dysphoria... It's so interesting how it's framed so differently. For example, a cis woman getting a breast augmentation is gender-affirming care, just like when a trans woman does it. But it's seen completely differently in the eyes of society. Or when they get laser hair removal. Etc.
@bossyboots5000

@@chatnoir9038 I have the feeling that cis women occasionally feeling they look boyish, as we experience it, nowhere compares to the actual anguish of gender dysphoria of a trans person or the challenge non-binary people feel with identity. Meaning, from the people ive listened to who have talked about gender dysphoria, it's like comparing a very mild headache to a debilitating migraine. Or a stubbed toe to a migraine. For a clumsy analogy. Cis women can just change our hair or put on some makeup or change our clothes, and feeling a bit boyish here and there doesn't question our identity of being a woman. I suspect we (cis) can only guess the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this. P.s. You weren't being mean 😊

@@bossyboots5000 I'm actually trans myself. And yeah, it's obviously not the exact same thing as with trans people, but the procedures and care and feelings stem from a very similar place; that you are not fulfilling the idea of what people of your gender are "supposed to look like". That you are not "woman enough" or "man enough". We are all connected in that way. And contrary to popular belief, not all trans people experience terrible gender dysphoria, and that is not the only way someone "qualifies" as transgender. I myself don't have that much dysphoria about my breasts, for example, but I do experience dysphoria when I'm referred to as a woman. Gender is a very complicated thing and arguably it's not even completely rooted in any science, for instance modern science has seen that the brains of men and women don't exhibit any differences that could be generalized. Gender, globally in many different cultures, used to be a much more nuanced thing, but European colonisation and the spread of Christianity forcibly established the man/woman dichotomy as well as monogampus heterosexuality around the world as the only acceptable form of existing. Being able to perform this cissexist heteronormative nuclear family model was used by racist scientists to justify how white people were "more civilized". So many of these structures still alive today stem from white supremacy, if we really dig into the roots. Now, as certain parts of societies in the global north have become slightly more accepting of people falling outside of this structure, transness and gayness are branded by many as "white people things" when that really isn't true. We as white people were the ones who tried to eradicate trans and gay people. Along with trans people becoming more visible in public discourse, there has been born a desire to medicalize the trans experience, in an attempt to gain validity in the eyes of society at large, especially cis people. However, this so-called "transmedicalism" is really not the way to go to help us. Science will not make transphobes accept us. I am also personally tired, as are many of my peers, of all conversations around transness being so centered around our suffering. A lot of our suffering is not due to am inherent "condition" of being trans, like experiencing super bad dysphoria, but it is due to the constant hate and violence we face for simply existing, and the neverending, well-founded fear of being hatecrimed. This "trans suffering" that is viewed as stemming from transness instead of societys's treatment of us is also used by anti-trans people to justify their hatred of us: "if there's nothing wrong with being trans and it's okay, then why are trans people ending their lives? Why are they so depressed then if they aren't just sick in the head" etc. Sorry for going on so many tangents. There are just so many things I have to say about the topic. Hope you gained some new perspectives.

@@chatnoir9038 Sorry, I didn't get notified of your reply until now. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in depth. I apologize if my comment appeared to reduce transgender lives to the singular aspect of gender dysphoria, that was not my intent. I was only referring to the physical aspect of differences, bc that's the topic that was raised and relevant to Alexadra's specific comment. I think many of the stories of any marginalized identity, whether race, sexual identity, etc, often get reduced to stories of suffering. Which is why we need more varied voices out there. I hear this often in the rest of the LGBTQ+ community and I hear it from Black content creators as well. I 100% agree that most of the suffering comes from how society reacts to otherness, not the difference itself. And rn trans people are under relentless and cruel attack legislatively, which feeds in-person harassment and violence as well. So, yes, I'm on board with that as well. I apologize if my wording implied that trans lives are all about suffering. As a cis woman who has always pushed back against the stereotype of what a woman is supposed to look like, I've found even that difficult enough despite my privilege (cis, white, thin, higher education), and it's caused a lot of body hatred and shame, plus societal pressures to adjust my gender presentation. And again, that's with cis privilege. So it kills me to think there are people out there who can't live their truth, wherever they are on the LBGTQ+ spectrum, bc I know their situation is so much harder than mine due to the privileges I have. The idea of gender dysphoria, as I've heard other trans people talk about it, kinda breaks my heart honestly bc it sounds so agonizing to be in that place of discomfort with something that is continually inescapable (whether from internal or external sources, as you stated). Having one's identity in limbo pre-transitioning (whatever that means for someone) really just sounds so emotionally and psychologically painful to me. Like, it sounds like one of the worst things someone could experience. That may not be how you experience it, and it sounds like it's not. Again, I'm only basing my feelings on stories of struggle and pain from others as well as my own experiences, but I shouldn't assume that every trans person experiences dysphoria in the same way or to the same degree. Or that every trans person's story is the same. I hope that makes sense. I was trying to come to the issue from a place of empathy, however misguided. I really appreciate your time to share your individual experience, as it better adds to my understanding of what it's like to live as a trans person in this world. 🤗 P.S. - I should clarify that when I said things like "we cis women" I was speaking about people like myself, on this side of the fence. Not that you specifically were in that group. Sorry if my wording was clumsy that way. ETA - Also, sometimes I'm just a f*cking moron 😂🤦 kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIDLfpV-jb1ogJI

I believe that confidence comes from the inside. I think we have to start loving ourselves more and stop being so judgemental of ourselves. I always tell my son when he goes out, this is after trying on many different outfits, that rarely are people looking at him, they are more concerned about how they look. As long as you feel good, then you look great - smiles do make a difference, hence all the looks he does get!!

I struggled with being comfortable not wearing makeup for a time. As a little backstory, I am being evaluated for autism as an adult. Us women who have a type of autism that can pass as neurotypical often mask hard, meaning we take extra care and put a lot of effort and energy to make ourselves fit in. So imagine a little teenage me, undiagnosed autistic, who starts hearing people whisper behind my back that I was weird for essentially not wearing makeup and not straightening my hair. I cried. A lot. So I started to wear makeup. Over the years, I wouldn’t go out without at least a little. It's like I didn't feel worthy to be seen by others without it. Without it, I felt insecure. I felt like people were judging me. I felt like I couldn't convince people I was worth knowing without it. Then as an adult, I worked hard on accepting myself for who I am. I was still undiagnosed, but I recognized that what I was doing wasn't healthy. I started building my confidence in who I was, inside and out. It was a long process. Now I am comfortable with who I am. I don't have to wear makeup because I feel I am worthy of people knowing me just by being myself. I have strengths. I have talents. Whether or not I wear makeup or dress a certain way doesn't change that. I now only wear makeup when I want to express myself with it, not to hide behind it. I guess I am sharing for anyone who may be facing similar insecurities. If this is you, doing what is mentioned in this video is only masking the problem. (Other than keeping your skin healthy, of course. Your skin is an organ with a very important purpose. Please try to keep it as healthy as you realistically can. Do this for health, not for appearance.) You won't feel comfortable without makeup because you aren't comfortable with yourself. If you truly want to feel comfortable with yourself without makeup, talk yourself up. When your insecurities enter your mind, take a deep breath and compliment yourself. It might be hard to think of one, but try as hard as you can. Do this every time. Go out of your way to compliment yourself. Recognize and acknowledge your strengths. Eventually, they will start coming to mind instead of the insecurities. You are a great person. You are worthy of acknowledgement and love. You have strengths that make you unique and valuable. Whether or not you wear makeup doesn't change that.

I've been masking all my life. When people called me weird, I adjusted my attitude in a futile attempt to fit in. This is random but I used to suck on my finger (forefinger... to be specific) until the third grade. My school mates often mocked me. I have really sensitive skin. There's some clothing that I cannot wear. I avoid wearing wigs because of how the hair feels against my skin. Sometimes, my skin would react to certain wigs. I'd have a rash for days. I am tender scalped, too. I don't like it when people touch me without permission. In high school, I was absent nearly half the time. I'd stay home just to rest. I didn't go anywhere or do anything particularly exciting. I simply skipped school because I wanted time to myself. Now I know that it was due to overstimulation. Having both autism and ADHD is certainly... interesting. Knowing hasn't changed who I am. I guess I'm just happy to know. I used to beat myself up for having shutdowns and meltdowns. At any rate, I don't like standing out. Especially standing out for the wrong reasons. As a teen, I didn't have the best skin. When people made comments about my skin, it made me want to conceal imperfections... just so that they could ignore me. Sincerely. At 25, I recently stopped wearing makeup. It stressed me out. I never wore much anyway... and I wasn't good at applying make-up 💀 my skin isn't clear but people still think I'm pretty. I think I like myself a lot more now when I don't feel like hiding behind makeup. I smile more and don't have to worry about creasing makeup. I look younger and healthier. I hate that it took me this long to get to this point where I'm learning to love myself rightly. I stressed myself out for no reason. I lived a very stifling life. It left me little room to breathe or even appreciate my natural beauty.

Unlearning the all or nothing mentality helped me so much when it comes to this subject! I also used to always either wear a cute outfit AND full face or a bum outfit and no makeup. Wearing a cute outfit can help you look so much more put together even without makeup, and it almost tricks the eye into thinking you are wearing makeup. The only thing I would add to this is I brush my eyebrows into place with a spoolie even when I'm not wearing makeup!

You’re so beautiful with or without makeup. I don’t wear makeup either. I often wear a bright lipstick to perk me up. I play up my eyes with black framed glasses (though I usually wear contacts). I think the big thing is not to care what others think. I constantly have people say, “You have really dark eye circles, you should cover them.” Well, I am 63 and I have learned to embrace them-cover up, it just cracks and looks awful (people do suggest I wear some). I have very fair skin, not a wrinkle, utterly clear and tight but smoker and marionette lines. If I wear a dark lipstick, I always wear a natural liner to keep lipstick and even gloss in place. Finding a good neutral gloss for my pink/bluish lips has been a challenge. But I will say light shades make me look like a corpse. I say, play up one good feature is another option. With blue eyes, a sweep of brown with some shine (water resistant) can do enough and just aquafor on my lips for my lips with some shine…(I won’t wear anything with scent). Yes, to hydration.

It happened a little at a time. When I decided to grow out my colored hair and be au natural that way is when it began. I stopped wearing makeup everyday. I was never all about it, but always enjoyed the fun of it. Never could get into the falsies or actual base makeup, but I would fret over my eyemakeup and my lashes quite a bit. Really, it is the summer that I completely let go. I've been without central air in through several Phx summers now and it's a chore to find stuff that doesn't just melt down my face. Anyway, I finally just don't mind my eyes blank looking. To me it is better than sweating it down my cheeks. So I go raw. I kinda like it. I'm really glad you made this, even if it doesn't lend itself to a longer series of videos. I must admit that, as a guy who got into skincare in my 30s, I did it for the wrong reasons. Or at least for unsustainable reasons. It took a while to internalize, but---hygeine notwithstanding, "getting ready" (skincare, clothes, accessories, or cosmetics) is not there just to make us look good "for" other people---they are ways of expressing confidence, self-care, and self-love. Every reminder about that is helpful.

Then at night I change back into pjs (Shlubby) and put away the sweats/leggings (Shlubby Lite). That, along with making my bed, have helped me feel more together than spending all day in the same clothes I slept in. It gives me the illusion of civility. 😉

Totally agree with the lash curling trick! I have straight lashes and it holds up quite decent during the day - even if I take a nap, I wake up and “oh, lashes!” Obviously not as strong as when you first curl them, but they still make you feel a lot better.

Great video, especially for summer! Would you consider doing a sunscreen focused video, sharing your favorites and maybe some good drug store options? How to wear it with makeup in the summer months without feeling too heavy or feeling like your face is melting? I’m in my early 40’s and limit my sun exposure, but I really need a good sunscreen protocol. Thank you!!

I have such blonde lashes and sometimes I don't feel motivated to do anything, even around the house, until I swipe just a little mascara on them. Then I feel like a person who can do things. So weird how little things can boost you up.

I have fair skin and can be super pale, which I don't mind, but I do mind my dark circles and that is something I always felt insecure about. And to be honest, I love not wearing makeup so in the past years I've been trying to get over that insecurity of mine. But, what I feel always helps is tinted lip balm, I guess a little cherry on my lips goes a long way confidence wise. :)

I am lucky enough to have found a dermatologist who has fixed up my skin with pretty affordable prescriptions. Now I rarely apply make-up (except for lipstick) unless I'm going out or if I have a GLARING blemish. What you said about sunscreen! I've found a couple I like and wear them every single day. My skin looks and feels so much better. Thanks for this great little video, Alex.

Here's an idea that could be fun/funny. Put on your make up without your contacts in. I wear glasses, never contacts and need a 20x mirror to do eyeliner and mascara. That basically means no wings for me because they will never come out the same - not even close.

Side note: I’m very artistic as well I literally get it from my dad it’s crazy but the amount of times that I change how I do my makeup and I use art techniques that I just assume will work and it does and then I see you showing how to do the same thing and it makes me feel so confident in my makeup and art skills cause I’ve really fallen off the makeup wagon I don’t follow any social media but SOME KZbin and I’ve been going thru a lot of medical and mental issues tryna get help Ive even had to quit working for a while and I feel a lot as tho I’ve lost my touch or my place on earth because I’ve lost everything im good at but when I watch your videos it really reminds me that I havnt lost anything I just am in a place in life rn and I will come back stronger and better and happier🙏🏻 please even if you decide to leave KZbin I would still love to see a few videos here and there or some way of still getting to see/hear you tlk, you really are so inspiring and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way from watching your videos❤️I doubt you’ll see this but maybe someone else will and feel less alone🤷🏼‍♀️❤️

I love all your videos, this is great. I've been looking for something like this, that could help me, because next semester I'm going to start studying some subjects in a laboratory (I'm a nutrition student). The thing is, I'm all about the glam, in almost 6 semesters my classmates have never seen my bare face, I'm trying to make peace with the fact that that's going to change, but I feel like it's gonna be kind of a shock, the sudden change. I can't apply most of these tips, since our clothes have to be like the uniform, the lab coat... I can't save it a little with my hair, because it will be in a cap, can't wear accessories of any type, and we can't use perfume or facial/hair stuff that has any kind scent. And they won't be able to see half of my face because I'll have a mask on haha. I really don't mind not using makeup, except for my dark circles, and my eyebrows 😅, precisely the part that they will be able to see. And it's not just about them, it's also about how it makes me feel. My eyebags are kinda like sunken, and well, dark, and it makes me feel really bad, for the eyebrows I don't think I'll have to worry too much, because I'll do my eyebrows with henna every two weeks, so I guess that's ok. But I don't know what to do about my dark circles😭 idk if there are any tricks, like those things that make the eye bag look brighter when you put some type of shadow in certain places, or something like that, very minimal so my teacher won't notice... what an awful situation. Anyway, I hope to find something before the semester starts🥹

Skincare and really helped my mental health and my sleep. I can wind down the day and have my like 15 minutes at the end of the day and while I applying and whatnot I go through what I liked/disliked about the day. What I need to do tomorrow. All the worries and brain worms that keep me up. It lets me acknowledge it and then I can leave the bathroom and it’s been thought about and it’s done for the day
