It's best to paint on a layer of resin first and letting it dry before adding the glass because the plywood will soak up a lot of resin. If you don't, you won't get as good a bond as you think and it can delaminate down the track. Also, if you are glassing over an outside corner, you will have the same bonding issue you have on an inside corner, so it's best to round the corners off with a router :)

There's a bit of talent involved in getting the right amount of resin down before the glass is placed, then getting just the right amount of resin into the top of the material, and then, if you are going to do a lay-up with woven roving, add more resin and apply the roving. Wet that out without over saturating the material. All the strength is in the material, not the resin, and too much resin actually weakens the layup. Once glass sets up, it needs to be "wiped off" with sandpaper to prevent air bubbles between the layups caused by "stickers".. Good glass is clear. A bad spot needs to be ground out and reglassed. Fiberglass is flexable because the strands are so tiny, and , yes, it is actually glass. A lot of the diy articles use epoxy resin, but ALL commercial projects are done in polyester resin. Too much hardener will make glass brittle as it ages or turn brown even when new. The enemy of fiberglass is sun light. Keep it protected (coated with something), and it will last many years. Originally, fiberglass resin was cured using sunlight, which is why all the fiberglass boats came from Florida for years. Don't try this though, just use the hardener. Unprotected fiberglass will continue to harden and then crack. If glassing over wood, wipe the surface off with sandpaper, then a barely moist cloth and coat it with resin... Allow it to harden, then wipe it again. Resand very lightly if needed and run the tack rag again. A really great filler can be made super cheap using CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) and resin. It really helps with inside corners and bad spots in cheap plywood like knotholes without affecting quality or strength. . .

Nice video. That said, always pre coat the surface you are glassing or it will suck the resin from the glass. Also, heave resin application is not a good idea and leads to weak layups. Just enough resin to soak the glass. Inside that box there is no way to get the extra resin out and it will pool creating an uneven surface.

Very simple nice example, enough to encourage anyone to try it. Recently bought a an older 19'8" Carolina Skiff which has a huge stern standing platform(easily 4'*7' beam with two 40 gallon plus bait wells. Its too large, no walking space behind the console seating. Since I rarely use the bait wells I am shortening the platform front to back distance and converting same bait well space to two seats for passengers, where the middle will become one bait well. Great motivating video!

sir, I have a question if you dont mind giving me an important tip. I have a concrete water slide in my swimming pool and it is not slippery as we want it to be. We are thinking of overlaying a fiberglass on top of the concrete. will it work just exactly how you applied it on your video? tHANK you in advance.
@FishingAdventuresHB
@FishingAdventuresHB 6 жыл бұрын
Good day and thank you for the message. On a concrete water slide you just have to make sure you clean it properly and get rid of any old paint before applying fiberglass. Also coat it with a layer of resin and let it soak in and semi dry before applying your 1st layer of fiberglass. Apply then at least 2 layers of fiberglass let dry for 48 hours and then give it a good sanding to make sure it is flat and smooth. Then apply 2 layer of gel coat and finish off with 1 layer of flowcoat. Flowcoat is gelcoat bassed but has an added wax layer that will rise to the surface and make the slide nice and slippery when wet. Also give it a good sanding in between the 2 layers of gelcoat but do not sand after flowcoat was added. I hope that I’m explaining it well enough but if you have any questions just ask and I’ll try my best to help you out.

Gelcoat? If your resin is waxed (polyester resin) then no need to paint or gelcoat, it should cure on its own, the non-waxed resin remains tacky and needs to be sealed inorder to cure.

The idea behind the roller is to get rid of all the air bubbles. You can also do this by just using a paint brush it just takes longer. The fibreglass and resin will stick to things can absorb the liquid so would not stick to metal properly.

i work for a boat yard and am having a hard time with the Epoxy resin fibre layout. truth be told i cant get the right calculation or say my layout looks powdery at the base of the lamination. can you help me out will be grateful with your help

The correct ratio for mixing resin with hardener is normally 2% so for every 1L of resin you use you have to add 20ml of hardener. Also when applying the resin make sure you add enough for the fibre to ubsorbe the epoxy as adding too little will also result in it not sticking properly and perhaps causing that powdery effect your talking about. Another thing is to use a fiberglass roller to be able to roll out all of the air bubbles and helps the epoxy seep through the glass and stick properly. Hope this helps. Cheers.

If it's a whitish color, it's probably water moisture, contaminating the epoxy

Instead of buying the fiberglass matting material, is it possible to reuse old fiberglass bats from a house tear down? Seems like it would save a lot of money.

I don’t think those bats are 100% fiberglass and some of the materials in the bats might react negatively to the resin and dissolve. Would be a very interesting experiment. Would you please let me know if you tried it and how it went.

I know you posted this a year ago but to be honest, I used old T-shirt's instead of fiberglass material. It came out great. Once the resin is on, and you use bondo, and after sanding you can tell the difference

glenn nuttall Hi. I find that the Chop strand is a lot easier to work with if your doing a box or something that is not a large flat service as it folds and moulds Easter. Thanks for watching.
