Just gotta say.. due to Gasser's series of videos that he's produced here on youtube over the last couple of years... I and a business partner are now going into business producing rc airplane fuselages made from our own molds and plugs. Pay attention cause Gasser's the man! Learned all we needed to know right here and maybe with a little trial and error on our parts. Keep up the great work my fiberglassing bro! And thanks much for all the hard effort!!!

@MrEvorocket .... YES...Before Waxing the mold...Get tooling gelcoat and fill the scratch if its deep?..... then WET sand it down to meet the surface of the mold....starting with 400 then 600 then 1000 then 1500 grit wet / dry sand paper.... Then polish the mold and it should be fine...OR... Just be sure to wax the scratch area very well... then you will have to sand down the gelcoat from the part where the scratch is....

Unusual question: I need to mold some leather items. I'd like to lay the wet leather over a plug and then press and clamp the mold on top to form the leather. So, in making the mold I need to account for the leather thickness.I'm trying to think what I can lay over the plug before making the mold. Perhaps something you haven't encountered, but any thoughts? Fantastic series of videos, by the way. Thanks for your generosity in posting them.

PVA is a Liquid Plastic that is mixed with alcohol...when sprayed, the Alcohol then evaporates and the plastic dries on the part or mold creating a flim so the glass woth stick to the glass.

@GiulianoGullini ......... PVA is a parting film that you spray on to produce a barrier between the mold and the part you are making....PVA is basically, Plastic that is dissolved in Alcohol..... You spray it on the mold and the Alcohol evaporates leaving the plastic film on the mold

thanks ,gasserglass,. i have a good general purpose resin just wanted to check before i purchased my materials , should i make the master mould all in one sitting is this best for all layers bonding together with the resin,or is it ok to let the resin go hard then add more layers or will this cause the lamination to seperate down the line,,ps is it ok to use plasticine to fill the gaps between the flanges ?

@MrEvorocket Adding some resin and a few strands of glass can only make the nut-sert stay even better.... But Ive never had a failing nut-sert in any hoods that we've made....Just use a GOOD QUALITY installation tool and make sure the sert is in all the way (expanded)... a cheap tool wont make the sert expand all the way...that is key!

@MrEvorocket .. YOU SHOULD use the best resin you can buy when making a mold...The same type as laminating resin but the best quality you can find...You want the mold strong and have little to NO SHRINKAGE in your mold or your parts wont be the original size... FRP-101 is a good choice for Mold Making and Laminating.... Don't use the cheap crap ever on anything..TONS of shrinkage will happen and a weak part will result... Simple Polyester Resin is fine.. But GOOD polyester resin!
@GasserGlass14 жыл бұрын
@EdBoonSucks ........... General or Normal lay up resin will yellow and will get even darker if too much hardener is used....... Also Depends on type of resin.....You need to use either EPOXY RESIN, CASTING RESIN or order some Crystal Clear Polyester resin from one of the fiberglass supply houses....Try FIBERGLASS COATINGS or FIBERGLAST

@MrEvorocket ... Not sure what plasticine is?.... I PREFER to lay TWO layers on my mold and let it cure before adding more layers.... ALSO, be sure to READ your resin can...If the resin has WAX in it, you MUST sand each cured layer of fiberglass before adding new layers... If NON WAX resin then no sanding between layers is necessary.... The first layer on a mold is called the LOCK LAYER to hold everything in place till you can ad more layers... Wish You The Best With Your Mold!

I made a fiberglass mold without gel coat and have pits and some holes in my mold. I plan to make quite a few parts from this mold. Besides starting all over again what's the best way to salvage a pitted mold? Fill the small holes with resin? Sand smooth and leave it? Or should I put gel coat in the mold to fill any imperfections, sand it smooth then buff it? Thanks
@GasserGlass9 жыл бұрын
you can use some Metal Glaze Glazing Putty for the pin holes but I would trash the mold and make a new one with gelcoat this time

OR............. you can fill the pits and holes with many coats of Caranuba Wax....let it fill in all the holes and dry....your parts will still come out a lil bumpy and will have to sand each and every part surface...lots of work for a new part...... Make a new one is what I would do if you can afford it, TIME WISE?

sorry my fault should have explained myself better.. both parts are fiberglass it is the front corner light surround from a truck,it has the outer skin and then i have the bolting mounts to go on the inside they are both shaped to fit. and there is only a small lip for this to sit in to only about 1 centimeter in depth, just need them to be strong and not fail and come apart , also if i mix my resin into a paste would you recomend this to hold a nut on place.. thanks a gain gasserglass

@2YuNg2Di .....SURE...... But even better is to get your shape in foam...then skim coat it with GOOD QUALITY BODY FILLER...Then sand it smooth or into the exact shap you want...Then make a mold of it..........YOUR WAY will take 3 times as long...a lot more sanding and a Whole Lot more messy!....But yes..you can do it the Old BIG DADDY ROTH WAY if you like.

Sorry My Man, I thought I mentioned the PSI I was spraying at?.... Maybe I Didn't...... However, I spray MOST gelcoats at 60 PSI at the regulator...... and ive always used a small Touch-Up spray gun to spray the PVA..... We use the SMALL touch-up gun so we can fill the PVA to the top of the cup.... We want NO AIR inside the gun or the PVA will start to harden Inside the gun..... A Regular size spray gun will work if your PVA-ing a full size car or boat mold.

Gasser, do you feel that tooling resin is necessary after gel coat, or can I just us the standard poly resin off fiberglasssite?
@GasserGlass10 жыл бұрын
Whelp...you only need Tooling GELCOAT to make molds and Laminating Gelcoat to make your parts.... Tooling Resin is no more then a good low or no shrink resin.
@GasserGlass10 жыл бұрын
If you make a part...use regular gelcoat....if making a mold, use Tooling gelcoat.....Tooling Gelcoat is only needed for a mold that will produce multiple parts .......... Use any resin you want....Good Quality Resin just shrinks less and if best for mold....No Real Thing as Tooling Resin.
