It's important to know how to gird your loins, people! Should you be unexpectedly attacked by baddies while wearing a ballgown, for example. Because how can you fight in a dress if it's tripping you up?

I could have used this advice last weekend when I was traversing the countryside and my carriage was attacked by mustachioed banditos looking to steal my collection of priceless Rubies. Normally I'd use my mastery of Kung Fu to shoo them away but they caught me in my best ball gown so I had no choice but to surrender my jewels. Well never again banditos! because I subscribe to Jill Bearup's youtube channel

Not to mention that a good period linen or wool does NOT tear with any ease. My first time buying long-strand linen I learned that unlike cotton, you can’t make a little snick on the selvedge and rip across for the length you want. No. You have to cut it all the way across.

@@JillBearup if the dress isn't made out of protein based fabric (not silk nor wool), but for instance cotton, then gall soap (time period appropriate) can help remove stains that have partially set as gall soap eats through protein stains. Gall soap is also great against grease stains. Don't wash with gall soap using bare hands unless you want to have your skin partially dissolved, because collagen is a protein that bile happily muches through.

I was OBVIOUSLY in my man-dress at the time so I couldn't fight to my full potential. I had my fedora and katana with me luckily, so I was able to reach 70% of my maximum power... I only needed 3. But unfortunately while I was taking care of the 20 ninjas in my living room, another had broken in and stolen my Hatsune Miku body pillow and My Little Pony figures. The dress got in my way as I tried to chase them down... and they escaped. If only I had known then what I do now. At such times the primary question becomes one of whether it's more embarrassing to spill the beans on victoria's secret or to get one's ass kicked by a now rather chilly and but considerably more lethal damsel. Provided you're of sufficient martial abilities it's more likely to be the latter, as anyone who would make light of your sartorial disadvantage would be having their attitude adjusted by a rather thorough session of retrophrenology.

I think you should consider taking up shurikenjutsu. That is, as I am sure you've guessed, the practice of throwing shuriken. Shuriken are thrown weapons of two definite types, "Hira-shuriken" (wheel shuriken) multibladed weapons which spin end over in flight and "bo-shuriken" or (stick shuriken). Everyone and his mother knows about hira-shuriken, the "ninja stars" that you can find in souvenir shops in every Chinatown. Bo-shuriken are far less commonly known and have a number of advantages many of which derive from the technique of throwing them being essentially a metal rod with a point at one end, bo-shuriken are easy to make, easy to carry (a long hair ornament with a point at one end or even a large and heavy nail would make a very good one) and, being as it were, non-bladed weapons, they only become illegal to carry in the moment that you use one as a weapon. The technique of throwing them is simple to understand, and, unlike the kind of knife-throwing that circuses have made famous, they generally don't require less on-the-fly distance calculation for your weapon to hit point-first because the throw is a matter of causing the weapon to make only a half-turn over the course of its flight. Best of all, throwing bo-shuriken makes anything with a point at one end that is light enough to lift and be thrown into a "field expedient weapon." That includes everything from a Swiss army knife or a leatherman tool, to a butterknife, or even a steel knitting needle or an open pair of scissors. Until fairly recently, the art of Shurikenjutsu has been relatively obscure but this has changed a lot over the last decade, in part, as a result of the rise of interest in "no-spin" knife-throwing. Stranger still, the Meifu Shinkage Ryu school's Soke (head of the school and possessor of the style) has gone to great lengths over the years to promote his school's style by traveling all over the world licensing teachers in the technique to spread his school's knowledge. Here is a link to information on Meifu Shinkage Ryu. If you try it, happy throwing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKGThn-wmsp0pMU

As someone who always had to wear long flowing clothes, the best way to always be ready to fight is to have slits which are hidden. These slots are basically overlapped by layers of the cloth or secured by clip buttons so normally they’re fully covered but when necessary, they can be frayed open. In my personal experience, I’ve never had to gather the loose fabric or tie them up as long as I knew how they’d move when I made a move, but this usually comes with experience, so it’ll take practise if that’s what you want to go with. Plus, if you can, Always add pockets to your dress designs even if they’re from older sewing patterns which usually don’t have pockets, add large, concealed poachers to carry daggers ✨✨✨

I have been postulating how a dress could modified to have the skirt hiked up for battle, (or crossing streams etc) in a way that you could do it with minimum effort and assistance. This video gave me some great ideas, including having a long ribbon sewn inside the skirt and connected to the skirt by a series of loops (think belt loops). You could then grab the hem of the skirt, find the ribbon, pull it up and tie it to a matching (and decorative) ribbon at the waist. This would hike the skirt to whatever height was needed, (within modesty) without looking like you are wearing a nappie and could then easily be let down after you are done battling off the non- handsome rogues and have no indication that you were fighting anyone, except for some wrinkles, (and possibly some blood stains.)

For real though, the hair accessory/pencil to keep hair up is a tool for every night travel. Since learning a sharp pencil can do much harm, I have felt very safe travelling at night through the park. Love the vid ♥️
