My Tae Kwon Do instructor based a lot of his teaching on Bill's fighting style, though one thing he added was that we also blocked a lot with the shin of our lead leg. So if someone was coming in, we also had three options for blocking, as we'd block low with our shins, mid and high with our hands. Bill's contributions to the practice of Martial Arts are definitely massive and not to be understated.

There is a lot to be learned from Bill's style. Much like Oscar De La Hoya, he used one side of his body for offense, and the other for defense (primarily). If you don't throw strikes from across your body, you really can't over commit to a strike, or become off balance as easily. Bill then added to that by generating power from his striking side (his left hand and foot). Bill could throw strikes with speed, or with power from his lead hand/lead foot. He also was a master of disguising his strikes by having them all look like the same strike until halfway through throwing it, when he chose a target. All his punches started out looking like a jab, all his kicks looked like a snap kick, until he committed. I've always felt this is not only a style meant for point karate, but possibly MMA too. Not enough people know Bill's story, or how legit he is. This guy was the UFC before UFC, hell he even was an announcer for the UFC in the early days. Badass.

His knowledge, charisma, enthusiasm and personality makes Superfoot the most popular seminar personality and it is here in full display. I love how Bill breaks down and simplify his unique sideways fighting system. Many thanks for this Jesse. Just before his retirement fight I trained with Bill for best part of a day. He complimented me saying I had good round kick, good side kick, but I was dropping my knee on the hook kick. 39 years later, having worked on it, I dont drop the knee. Thats one of the key points fighting sideways, every kick comes from the same high knee position, every punch can be delivered from that guard style he uses, esp his left hook surprised alot of good fighters.

@Msosbog4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Though a little clarification: Bruce Lee's JKD concepts actually predate Bruce Lee. They are older martial art concepts that Bruce brought together in a hybrid-like system (not a style). Most of these were regarded by kung fu masters as closely guarded secrets and in combination with teaching westerners, Bruce was not very welcomed by the old school practitioners. For example the intercepting fist is actually reading, or "intercepting" the intent of the opponent; This is a very old method in kung fu usually described as reacting second but striking first. Bruce's innovation was combining these methods, or "hacks", and presenting them in a way that can be adopted and integrated into literally any style. For example Chuck Norris was a student of Bruce Lee, but Chuck's style was Tang Soo Do. I would say it's very similar to what Jesse is doing with his, if I may, hybrid style of Karate. I hope no one is offended as I mean no offense. Respect and love to all present and past as we continue to grow and learn from eachother. 🙏👍

I love mr Wallace and have been blessed to train with mr Wallace on more than a few occasions . I’m also an MMA / bjj coach - Back in his time , yes that style and stance worked and he was a beast with it for my sport. Bladed stance , in my opinion should be done but limited , due to the ability to easily have your back taken in my sport MMA [ self defense because even thugs know “take the back “ and choke). Lead leg kicks can more easily jammed and or open to being rendered soft and opportunities for “takedowns” are handed over on a platter. Mr Wallace is a phenomenal athlete and was an absolute beast that could pull this off. I’m not saying it wouldn’t work , it’s just a tool, many people that are handy can’t use a “wood lathe” but it’s still a good tool. I don’t think it replaces a hammer, and saw. The thing I took from him that is 100 is , be on the attack , speed works , and fakes and set ups are necessary. Mr Wallace is a national treasure and I would never say a cross word about this man.

Isn't the stance in taekwondo fully bladed/sideways tho? :o

I was fascinated with this master when I was a child in the 80's. Cut out all Black Belt Magazine photos of him and taped them to my walls .

@@angelmirchev8433 the stance? There are many TKD stances. Tournament fighters favor the side stance for many of the same reasons. Especially point fighting where your not trying to knock the guy out. Speed is the game there.

Something -I didn't hear him talk about- he only touched on, was the fact that by using the sideways stance you have *minimized your opponent's target* making your body _as thin as possible_ and then as Bill points out, you also have all sorts of other advantages in your *counterstriking* .. The sideways stance is criminally underutilized in MMA due to pure dogmatic training standards in the current era.. My guess is someone who is totally unorthodox in this regard will come along and have a lot of success with the side stance and it will return to fashionable for training and the absolute greatest fighters will be able to switch between the each of the orthodox square up stance / side stances as well as orthodox / southpaw stances seamlessly, all depending on the position of the opponent, to be as effective as possible a la Lerdsilla or "The Matrix" Vasily, or Michél Pereira, etc.. The absolute ELITE will all be blessed with this ability, regardless of natural ability to achieve their goals and success in MMA, and the rest of combat sports in general. That's my prediction, at least. We'll see how it goes. Time will tell.. 🤷🏻♂️

Totally love this man. Having recently had knee surgery myself, I have certainly acknowledged the change in my fighting style to protect my knee. But I still have 27 years of techniques to reprogram via neuroplasticity. Rest is certainly true, but I've also taken advice from my physiotherapist, and continue with what my body knows ... just slower for now.

I studied kung fu that was really interesting him breaking it down from the different moves from the one leg. An amazing man. Thank you Sir.

Bill Wallace is a true legend! Definitely an inspiration in my early martial arts development. Great to see he’s still active and fit, goes to show you that age is only a number.

I met this guy in IL. such a funny down to earth guy. On top of new stuff, he confirmed and built on a lot of ideas I already had for fighting from a sideways position.

Love your work. Lifelong martial artist on my son’s YT. Years ago, decades, moved out of NYC & subsequently became friends with a local karateca. Later introduced to his sensei. When the sensei had Wallace give a seminar I was invited to participate for free & later to go out with him, Wallace & a few senior students for some food, beverages, & socializing. Hit it off with Bill & when I asked about stance he said he had a permanent knee injury in his right knee so he protected it by using it as his plant foot for kicking Laterbhe found other advantages as well. Except for my son and a couple of martial artists who I trusted, I never told anyone about what he told me til well after he had retired. Bill and Joe Lewis were were two of my favorites for studying techniques. I hope at my age I won’t have to throw down in the street any more, but I am still the same person-not as strong but twice as skilled so I will be a martial artist for the rest of my life. Plus started doing jiu jitsu traditional speed training when I learned how from a library book. In retirement I still have faster hands than even my son’s basketball player 20 something friends playing around with hand speed games. Speed plus power plus technical know how plus a willingness to engage when necessary can manipulate hotheadedness as needed. But I know better than to go to the ground and stay there against bjj. But the bjj guys who are good enough to not be hit or thrown easily are not the people who start stuff. In statistics a sample size > 30 is considered adequate for meaningful results. After decades I can say I never started street stuff but became a Marine at 19 with two years karate taught by a paratrooper karateca and a year with a Golden Gloves champion with all first round KOs, if the other guy of course. So I can say that I have had a statistically significant number of street encounters. Maybe one every year or two only a few really dicey. Your work on interdisciplinary techniques is a direction that martial arts must go in order to not grow stagnant and/or irrelevant outside the training hall. Thanks again to you and your inner circle.
