@tanjudermanl9111Ай бұрын
Dear Jesse Sensei, after watching your latest video, I realized again how important kata applications are, especially chokes, arm and leg locks and throws from the waist, leg sweeps, etc. Thank you so much Sensei Osssu ❤🧡💛💚. During my years of karate practice (Shotokan 5 years, Shorin-Ryu 1 year, Ashihara 1 month), I always asked my teachers about street fighting applications of katas, but I usually did not get very satisfying answers. I remember when I was young, when I had to defend myself on the street a few times, I mostly defended myself by jumping within kicking distance and throwing a double front kick (tobi mae geri), and luckily my opponents who got hit by that kick never got back on their feet. But one day, we had a street fight trial with a good friend of mine, a black belt 1st Dan Judoka on the national team. The result was very humiliating for me as a karateka. I had not been able to hit any other Karate strike technique except for the kizami suki. My judoka friend managed to knock me down with an osoto gari in about 1 minute and then choke me on the ground. When I was a child in Turkey, our elders had made us wrestle on the grass since we were very young (wrestling was in my youth the numer one national sport, it comes from our ancestors, besides traditional oil wrestling is still very popular in Turkey, my grandfahter was a heavy oil wrestler by the way) so all my neighborhood friends knew the basic wrestling techniques, despite that, it took a very short time for my judoka friend to throw me to the ground, because my own mind was only telling me to do karate, I had programmed my mind wrong, because they had not taught me how to do this in my karate dojo. The training and teaching methods were very inadequate back then, aren't they still the same? After this bitter encounter, I started learning Judo along with my Karate training, and about 2 years later, my friend confirmed with a final exam that I had learned Judo at an intermediate-advanced level, enough to use it on the streets with my Karate technique. Thanks to the Judo street techniques I learned, I was now interpreting Katas much differently than my teachers, and most importantly, I was better than everyone else at Bunkai, which is the essence of the practices. Karate-Do and Judo should never be considered separately, and this was also very realistically revealed in your self-defense video. It was awesome, I am so proud with you dear Sensei. Thank you so much to prove us all right. ✌✌👊👊 In addition to Judo, I also studied Wing Chun for about 10 years in 3 different schools. I think Wing Chun is much better at close range than Karate, which is much removed from its diminished essence that is currently taught in Dojos. Karate is actually better than Judo at long range in many ways, because Judokas cannot strike effectively either, but they are clearly superior in close grappling techniques. In addition, I reached the degrees of Kick Boxing (3rd Dan) and Tackwondo (1st Dan). I also took boxing lessons for 2 years, I had already taken my first lessons from my father, who was an amateur boxer in his youth, but I had no experience in boxing except for a few street fights. Knowing Wing Chun was very useful when I fought Bare Knuckle in the ring a few times. In conclusion, real martial arts should be a good combination of all of them, which in this case is Jeet Kune Do (JKD), but not as a style at all, it should definitely not be about imitating Bruce Lee. To take the core concepts and philisophies from his amazing book "The Tao of JKD" and combining them as your very unique individual style. I think we should not imitate, we should specialize in techniques that are effective on the street for ourselves, we should be experts in real life-and-death struggles. Otherwise there is no meaning at all, when we are not trying to perfectionise are lives, our moralities and our Martial Arts with real expieriences from live itself. This is the highest goal for a Martial Artist IMO.

First of all, thank for you showing some real Zanshin! Control with words first, attitude, demeanor. I love how you first offered solutions of accommodation, and then, even mid-fight you acted as a true Bugeisha, asking to end the dance, as early and painlessly as possible. It's important to try and guide your opponent back onto the path. Nice to see it in action! I love how you have found outlets for your Karate Nerd side, which are also so practical! Kata Bunkai, however, in English anyway, means more like "breakdown", as in a thorough explanation of all possible applications, rather than just meaning "application in fighting". It's about understanding both application, and philosophy, and hopefully aiding to its evolution through your insight as student of each technique. Bunkai is a conversation that should be ongoing among qualified students, you know? As a way of beginning their own journeys toward spreading the art as sensei etc. Signed, Some white belt chick, in love with knowledge and blossoming

Met him, Jerry Beasely (of Black Belt Magazine), Ted Wong, Tommy Gong, Lamar Davis all wayyy back in1994 at Radford University in Virginia. As far I know, I was the first minor to pass Sifu Wong's footwork test, unless he was lying. So many guys today are geniuses and black belts. Nobody just wants to just go down to Nova Uniao and roll until your partner says, "that reminds of playing with my cousin Royce. That was a nice day to get my white belt. Watch out for belts trying to turn black. Remove the stain and wear it white.

This is really really good you explain "Never use more force than the situation requires" as its not only about staying out of jail, but it reflects the deeper understanding violence is the result of internal loss of control. Our mind is the ultimate navigator of this reality. Life is delicate and only grows in silence. IF in that moment of loss of control that someone is then presented silence by the person they felt all hope was lost with in their moment of suffering, this could end violence. The concepts of japanese and okinawan thinkinking comes from Buddhist concepts and this lead to significantly different fighting concepts. This is why I like your mindset in these videos, because you don't have an ego that prevents proper cherishing of life. This is a reflection of strength which long ago in japan was understood to be what helped children not grow up being afraid of life around us. Children can only become strong if they are taught to acknowledge all realities...The biggest on being how they manage their mind...Keep taking time and care to silence your mind. Even if you do not see results from this, It influences that of which we can not see.

Thet thing you said there about only applying the necessary force in a self defence situation is so 100% correct. It is also something that is so often missing in videos I see online, where they treat every kind of attack like a life or death matter where you have to terminate the other guy. Back when I was doing ju-jitsu, our instructors were also instructors at the police academy, so every time they showed an attack, they would discuss appropriate and inappropriate responses. Precisely so you wouldnt be the one ending up in jail.

I don't know if I would be able to hold up that self defense only ideal against multiple assailants. I target eyes, throats and legs. And I'm not very good at verbal de-escalation. I thought you really validated Karate during the tournament and proved it's useful to learn. I'm still so shocked in watching the two seasons by how effective simple boxing and ground and pound can be though. I'd love for you post a video on your reflections on what you took away from the experience and how it can be used to improve martial arts and self defense in general.

When my man Jesse casually leaves out the time he kneed the counter a few times to intimidate Natan 🤣
