This is one of the best instructional videos I think I've watched. You are an excellent teacher, and I can imagine very inspirational around the job site. Please create more videos like this. Particularly on this subject of mix pitch roofs. I'm tackling my first ever roof and I'm up against this very problem, albeit it's a trussed roof, which in some respects is complicating matters rather than helping as the parts I'm having to cut, including the doubled hip itself are needing seat cuts over the truss as well as getting built up above wall plate level in order to achieve the required overhang to both pitches. It's REALLY testing me. Anyways, thanks very much for sharing this very helpful information and wisdom.

Awesome explanation. Thank you so much. Hard to find such clear info on this complicated framing, even on the internet, these days.

Adam Brubaker There is much lacking in this video in the way of clear explanation and I also see that the video was uploaded in reverse so I'm going to do this video over for those that are not as acquainted with the terminology.

I bought that book by Marshall Gross in the early 90's and learned a ton from it. I've used that knowledge to frame roofs to this day. I've been a carpenter since 1984.

Johnny Carranza I am amazed by your appreciation and because of that. I will be uploading more videos with far more detail and I will even do this video over that the view of it will not be flipped and you can see the proper numbers written in the correct form. I will also be sure to have better video quality so you will be able to see exactly what I am punching in the calculator that you might be able to learn exactly what I know. Thank you very much for your inspiration words cannot express my heartfelt desire to share and teach what I know, thank you again.

Yes I do use the CMP on the job site all of the time on the fly. But like I mentioned that calculator has it's limitation as does the Roof framers Bible. The method that I'm using here is simply a method that allows for one to tackle any Super custom luxury with confidence which is very rare for the average single-family home builder. Here in the midwest, the CMP is a must have for all of the "top notch" carpenters. One is not really considered a serious carpenter if he does not own a CMP.

Need more Instructional videos like this, I like the detail of each step. I rely on the CMP too much and don't understand the steps in between the buttons.

Thanks for the info, but the most amazing thing is before watching, I just got off the phone with my pastor. I had been talking to him about Melchizedek. I almost fell out of the bed when you called for him to bring you something. Cool name.

What if you want 2 different overhangs? And still have the soffits tie together? 🤯

I have an old Home I am putting an addition on. one of the pitches of the additions hip roof is less of a pitch then the rest of the house. Because the plate is set on the house I can not raise it to account for the overhangs meeting. Is it OK the to lower the plate height on the less steep side? instead of raising the plate on the steeper side?

With all the modern electronic gadgetry we have today, wouldn't you think that somebody would know how to make cameras not show up backwards? It's not so bad when one is just listening to a speech, but when you get to writing numbers, it gets a little weird.

what happens if I have an existing roof and therefore wall plate to line up with. existing rafters on 42 degree pitch are old 4x2s and the new extension rafters on the other side of the new hip are to be 8x2s at an 11 degree pitch. the plate for the 11 degree roof has a fixed height due to steel above bi folds and low house windows.so I have two fixed plate heights and am struggling to work out the kick out for the hip?i work in metric and never done a bastard hip before but i am enjoying learning this. do you have any advice? kind regards

You are joking right? You think that i simple? Wow!

John Jones I agree that this is more for the roof cutter that has a basic knowledge of a simple hip roof but for the uninitiated this is a good way to get the feet wet with the theory to how all roofs are put together.
