Thanks so much for your comments Martin - much appreciated. You only have to do the Confirmation Statement once a year, so if you only set up your company 3 months ago then you don't need to do it until a year after the company was incorporated.

Hi - thanks for your comment. If your company is dormant then you need to do the 3 following things: (1) Submit an annual confirmation statement as usual, (2) Submit accounts on Companies House website (as shown in my other film) but click the box for 'Dormant Accounts' and then you don't have to fill in any figures, (3) Contact HMRC (you can do this by phone and it's very easy) and tell them your company is dormant. They will then send you an email confirming that your company is dormant and you then don't have to send them any accounts to them in future. (It's important to do this because otherwise HMRC might chase you for tax).

Hello Darren, thank your for this amazing and detailed video. I got a message from First Formation saying that I need to file a confirmation statement, I follow all the steps you have in the video but I don't see any link to click on to do it. It is due on November 25, 2022.

If you look at the bit on the video starting at 2.24 you'll see there is only one link that says 'File Accounts'. You click on this link ('File Accounts') and eventually it should take you to another link to file your confirmation statement. If this doesn't work, then you need to phone Companies House (they are really helpful)

If you're going to make your company dormant please remember that you have to contact HMRC as well. Their process for making a company dormant is slightly different. A few years ago I made one of my company is dormant and I phoned HMRC about it. They were very helpful and explained the process over the phone (it's very easy).

Thanks for your comment. To check the exact date for submission of your conformation statement, go onto your own company's page on the Companies House website and it will give you the date there. It will then be the same date every year to submit your confirmation statement - BUT you are allowed to change this date if you want to.

Is it a new company (less than a year old)? If it is, then the button might not appear until nearer the time accounts are due. Also, is the other button appearing (the button for filing a Confirmation Statement)? Or are both buttons missing?

If you've already submitted your accounts to Companies House, then it is very difficult to make changes. You can't make changes online, but if it's something important, then you can phone them and explain the problem and they might agree to make changes. To be honest, I don't think it will matter too much about expenses just for Companies House, but obviously you need to make sure you've got everything exactly correct when you do your submission for HMRC as this will affect how much tax you pay.

I've also been on Universal Credit and zero hours contracts in between...so i was just confused. Should i still file my accounts. @@IELTS_UK ​ Yes, you have to submit accounts to Companies House every year, even if your company hasn't made any profits (unless it's a dormant company). But the issue about expenses is more relevant to the other accounts that you submit separately to HMRC. As I mentioned in the film, I can't advise on submitting accounts to HMRC myself, as I am not an accountant. I always advise people if possible to use an accountant in relation to tax and HMRC. But if you can't afford an accountant, then I'd suggest you phone the HMRC helpline as I have found from experience that they are really helpful, and they will be able to give you advice relating to your company expenses.

Many thanks Jon. I'm not an accountant myself, so I always advise people that it's best to get advice from a qualified accountant when it comes to filing accounts for HMRC (filing for HMRC is more complicated as it involves making sure you are paying the right amount of tax).

You have to contact Companies House to request it, and they send it to you by post. You cannot get it by email or phone. For security reasons, they always post the code to your registered company address.

Many thanks for your comment. I really appreciate it. Regarding the Wales thing - when I set up my company in 2006, I paid an agency to incorporate the company for me. For reasons that I still don't understand, this agency always used the Companies House office in Wales for all their company set-up work. So it wasn't my choice at the time, but it made no difference to me anyway! (Incidentally, since then, I have set up another company, but I did the incorporation work myself and saved a lot of money by doing it myself).
