I could see mechs being the comfort zone because in their simplest form they're mostly just a series of boxes stacked on top of each other. Take a few weeks to get good at perspective and it'd be simple to draw a couple mechs. It probably took longer to get a handle on drawing the "aesthetic" things on the mech like vents and tubing than it did the mech itself.

I'm an actual professional artist. Those CalArts sketchbook aren't really sketchbooks, they are a form of artwork, they miss the point of a regular sketchbook (what you have) which is to explore ideas, better your skill and generally mess up. My sketchbooks are all pretty ugly at the core, but they're helpful. They help me to get ideas out of my head, to get shapes right and to find the right color combinations. I know some artist work with sketchbooks, but they use the sketchbook as a canvas. (Marco Mazzoni comes to mind) But yeah, you figured it out yourself in the video :D

This right here!!! I approach everyone of my sketchbooks as a book of notes to refer to for my actual pieces. Messy paint swatches, pages among pages of gesture drawings and desperate attempts to understand the perspective or forshortening of a piece I'm working on, thumbnails, pratice with proportions because the struggle is real. None of it is meant to look pretty it is all just a way to learn and test new ideas or materials.

I agree. Former CalArts student here, before they implemented this STUPID sketchbook requirement. I think it doesn't actually show you what a sketchbook should be when they encourage students to turn in sketchbooks like the ones you showed. They don't show their thought process. They just show me their ability to curate. Your sketchbook tells me WAY more about you. They are asking for basically a second portfolio.

Yeah, it's something I see a lot with certain artists. They tend to be more "left-brained." They work best with geometric shapes and linework. You'll find more male artists doing these intricate drawings than females. Not trying to be sexist, but it just takes a certain mind to create things like that. If someone can find a female who draws things like that, I'd be very interested to see her work. (I'm a female as well so please don't think I'm some misogynist)

Beautiful stuff!! This really reminds me of the last three days before I sent off mine. MAJOR crunch time. I see you referenced my sketchbooks and honestly, your approach is way more similar than you might think!! People assumed I preplanned and composed every single one of my pages in advance but that’s not quite true: I made a list of skills/experimentations I wanted to demonstrate. I’d refer to this list if I was feeling uninspired but otherwise, I’d just kinda go for it. Like you, I kept to one theme per page which helps create a unified look. And you say your stuff wasn’t organised but it was!! 100% calarts worthy. I know for me and my classmates, once we finished our books, many of us went back in to fill gaps, add notes, decorations, colour etc. This is what gives our stuff that “polished” well planned look, but it’s all afterthought. It’s not like we know what our pages will look like! I agree that sketchbooks are a safe space for our art and that Calarts sketchbooks don’t quite fit that category seeing as they’re designed to be looked at but truthfully, that is how I draw even if people don’t see my work. That method IS my comfort zone. Many assume I have a hidden trash book or something but all my crappy doodles are on my iPad or scraps of paper lol. Best of luck to you with your work! This was a great vid and you have a new sub :)

Hello Anya! That's a really good point about going back to fill in gaps and notes. That's something I definitely do as well! First of all, that's freaking awesome that you do draw like this in your regular sketchbooks because I certainly don't 😁. My main concern is these Calarts sketchbooks might be skewing beginner's perception of what a sketchbook ought to look like. Sometimes, I think it's better to forgo a nice page in favor of learning something as a result of 'ugly' drawings. I think that using a list like you, is actually a really good solution because that's a lot more focused on improvement/growth. Not that it's always necessary to be 'improving' with every sketch but that's an aspect of sketching that I find is often overlooked on KZbin. Thank you for watching and joining in on the discussion! And welcome aboard! P.S I have a secret ugly sketchbook that no one knows about.

What made you think this was a good comment to leave? On a video which is not explicitly but certainly implicitly for people feeling insecure about their sketchbooks, what made you think that saying "oh, that thing you assumed I worked very hard on was actually much more effortless than you think! Hey everyone in the comments discussing what actual sketchbooks look like, yours may be messy and full of trash but all of mine actually ARE that perfect :) I left this comment just in case this video meant to make people feel better about their sketchbooks was actually achieving it's goal! uwu good luck!"

Jackson I think you’re misinterpreting what I was saying - My sketchbooks were one of Chroma Moma’s examples. This video heavily implied I have “secret” sketchbooks or that a lot of hidden elements went into the final book but that simply isn’t true in MY case. I was responding to an implication that is incorrect for me but in no way did I discredit the way others approach sketchbooks. I am allowed to defend myself and my *actual* sketchbooks. You put words into my mouth. I never said I’m perfect by ANY means but my sketchbook happens to look more “polished” because of what I stated in my original comment. I was trying to provide more insight into my artistic approach in order to demystify CalArts sketchbooks a little. Surely that’s beneficial to newer artists? If anything, this video would be invalidating the way I draw, as if we *have* to have a bunch of messy work to be authentic. I know, however that this video *isn’t* saying that at all but it feels like *you* are saying that to me. Look, I didn’t come here to discourage anyone and I’m sincerely sorry if that’s what my comment did. My entire channel is dedicated to helping artists grow and find confidence in their work so it doesn’t make sense for me to discourage others.

Like Maxaye commented, there is the concept of doing a “bad” sketchbook to help you alongside your “good” sketchbook that you show people. It is kinda phony when you present your “good” sketchbook in such casual context. But I do think it’s a beautiful kind of art piece in itself. I think it would be fun to try having two - one to be a genuine sketchbook and one to be a finished product to be proud of. Like how people scrapbook kinda! But of course I would be clear about that when presenting the final work.

I did something similar when applying for my art foundation programme, though definitely not intentionally! We were tasked with submitting a 50-art-piece blog online to apply for a place on the course and i left it last minute... 12 hours to submit 50 drawings. I did reuse some artwork I had not included in previous coursework so not all of it was brand new but I've got to say that it was 100% the most streamlined my portfolio has EVER looked because i did it all at once. I try to reflect on that when i work now but it is still something hard to work with when you space your work out over long periods of time. Its also a lesson learned that I CAN work hard, i just need restrictions/deadlines to get into it.

I can’t stay being creative for a day, at most I can only do 1 to 2.5 hours. I just realized that I’m missing the point of what a sketchbook really is. It’s supposed to rough and raw and just, you know, ideas. It’s supposed to be a tiny space in the universe where I am allowed to create. The keyword here is allow. I am to allow myself to create, develope, and grow, and the process doesn’t have to be perfect from the start. Sketchbook is just like a journal, but in the form of visual and images. I guess I just needed to be reminded that I am also allowed to express in however and whatever way I could, through sketches. I’m glad I found this video :) Thank you.

Those "Sketchbook" tours are probably more of an artbook tour, wouldn't it be more rewarding to see where someone struggled and eventually overcome the struggle? it gives people like me who are just starting out drawing hope. If I ever get good I'll happily show my sketchbook complete with the infantile doodles, erased ideas and the not so good drawings.

As a current art student in uni, i can really say that the act of "doing" is another form of practice. I understand the feeling of "empty practice" but as long as you're consistently doing something, observing what you're doing, etc, it's a form of observational exercising and coordinating your eye with your hand. Depending on what you're doing you also could be observing colors and understanding how shading works etc. Any form of drawing is a form of exercise and I think that's wonderful

This video was incredibly inspiring to me, it's given me a lot to think about! I've actually never thought of my sketchbooks as a cohesive whole before, more like a collection of higher quality paper to do full finished works on- I'm not sure that I've ever done a study in one before. It's been a while since I've had that pure hype and joy about art, almost a year honestly, but I felt it today hearing you say that Mechs are your comfort zone. That's the complete opposite of me, I never draw machinery, my comfort zone is human anatomy. When I want to draw but have no idea what to do, my default is to draw a spread of hands, or a person. I've never thought of machinery as visually expressive before, but something about watching you draw that first mech, knowing it's comfortable for you the way bodies are comfortable for me, really hit me It's beautiful, made me think of them as something someone could be passionate about from an artistic perspective, instead of just a technical one, and it got me excited to maybe draw some robots! Honestly, I have no idea what witchcraft magic the youtube algorithm is pulling by recommending me this, I don't watch sketchbook tours, I very rarely watch art videos at all, and yet here we are. You with a new subscriber, and me excited to watch more!

I think this is a great study in composition and cohesiveness, more so than the fundamentals of drawing and visual arts practice. In addition, this forces you to understand what an artist needs to do personally to complete and polish a thought, instead of being complacent. In the end, the medium becomes a magazine or coffee table book of sorts. Something more than general studies.

I love the thought about how each drawing holds a feeling and moment in time with each one bc it's so true certain drawings/sketcbooks stand out to me based on how I was feeling or what happened that day. Sometimes how I was feeling when drawing it affects how much I like the outcome theres a story with each drawing beyond just the subject

Being a perfectionist as an artist SUCKS. I keep having to remind myself that not everything I create will be perfect, nor will I always like it. Seeing a sketchbook as a safe space for experimentation is a nice way of looking at it, though, and I think it will help me in the future 🖤

This is awesome. I love that you challenged the CalArts Sketchbook idea - I used to treat my sketchbooks more like the "art book" and stress over goofing any of the pages. Now, I reserve my sketchbooks for learning, experimentation, and studies :) sometimes notes from podcasts and other learning moments. You have BEAUTIFUL linework / artistic skill. Way to go for challenging yourself and sharing it with all of us!

I wish I could just be inspired by this sort of thing. I was suprised at how mostly relatable you were, often very skilled young artists are out of touch with others not at their level. I wish I could just appreciate the beauty in what others make, instead of turning that awe into self-hate. Really good video though. The only one of these types of video that I could. The fact you failed your goal, did touch me. As down as I feel, it reminded me that you are just a human like me. Edit: removed the self deprecating stuff, kept what I actually though was valuable in the comment.

I think we should start classifying sketchbooks into two categories: sketchbook and artbook, or something. I dont think there's anything wrong with using a sketchbook for making high quality art pieces but its not really a "sketchbook" anymore even if you are using a sketchbook to do so.

What I've come to find out while being in the journal subculture, is some will use the journals to help plan an artpiece, and some will deliberately create the whole artpiece in the book itself, kind of in a given genre of sorts.

A couple of year back I used to fill 1 sketchbook per 1 or 2 weeks, it was really fun, now a days I pass days whiteout drawing. My sketchbooks where super messy as one (usually the right one) Page was a drawing or multiple ones and the other one (left page) was for thumbnails, quick little drawings messing with color, water color and various materials. I tried to had some clean sketchbooks with each page being a whole planed drawing, and that wasn't that fun as I hoped as I like to do full illustrations and all but having a full sketchbook just for that would stress me out more than making me have fun (too much Pages to look into) so I kept the sketchbook for messy and sketchy stuff and single pieces of paper and my computer for more finished stuff. :)

a sketchbook can be whatever you want it to be - unfinished, messy, experiment, clean, organised... heck mine to encourage me to draw different things I turned it into a comic. No real plot, occasionally messing around with different shots, and rough sketchy as all hell. For me it was better than doing pages dedicated to hands, dedicated to feet ect... because I'm also a writer it's teaching me to tell stories visually and it's been fantastic. You do what you feel like with your books! However - If you're trying to do it for industry purposes... make sure you show your dirty roughs! Your messy ideas behind your peices. That will land you more jobs if you can show your process than only a book full of finished peices. All design industries want to see where and how you find inspiration, something art schools don't teach you when you're there.... but damn should. Your art is beautiful and your process is incredible, the skills you have built up are spectacular and been able to see how you think through your roughs is super wonderful.

It is empty practice if that is what you are doing. Filling a sketchbook in a set time like this can be useful if you are trying to push your imagination and check how solid your knowledge/draftsmanship is; you go to draw a crab and you try to draw it as true to your memory as you can while it is riding a ballistic missile into the wall. In that case you are "just messing around", but you are pushing your memory, imagination generation. You mentioned James Jean, and I think his sketchbooks were both very carefully crafted (I am sure he put an insane amount of hours in, and he even extols how important constant work is for an artist) and often with a hidden aim if not for his own words. He has said that his great arc of his art was to dive deep and reveal his subconscious. He wasn't "just sketching" (although I am sure he did that often), he was drawing often in a very specific manner. Then, once he "revealed" some interesting subconsciousness, he would use the seemly random objects to practice different textures (egg shell, scales, metal, etc.). This type of drawing is useful since artist must constantly conjure up new or novel ideas for themselves, and he was essentially training his brain to become more plastic and finely tuned for this type of art. Not all of his art was like that, but I think most other artists love his art for their expression and his particular type of line. Love you work!

Firstly. Your sketchbooks are everything you said the other sketchbooks were lol Second. To combat first page jitters I either start in the middle or back of the sketchbook. Sometimes I just draw on loose parts and paste them inside. :) Or draw with my tablet and paste them in.

Modern internet culture is cancer and twice so for artists. It's like everything that could have gone bad did in the most spectacular way. Inspiration makes you self-conscious, choice makes you unable to choose, tools leave you clueless how to use them. I like your videos because you seem to be a real person, not a soulless printer that produces impeccable art on a 24/7 basis.

I use my sketchbook as a.. how should I say it? It's like a journal, I always imagine how pretty I want to make it, but then it ends up like.. hm. There's a lot of Pinterest picture -studies-, stickers, trash, to do lists, random drawings from when I was bored in class, my dad's signature, idea lists, text of where the drawn person comes from to fill space, sketches for finished pieces, pages that I consider as finished pieces because it's the best I can do, a quote, homework notes from when I forgot to bring my homework planner to school, sketches for my cake, me trying out different styles, drawings other people made, and a stationary item that is for whiting out mistakes in your notes (and then you can write over the white space again) (my classmate wanted to throw it aways but I thought it was cool). So, I think your sketchbooks are very cool and nice. :)
