This was such an interesting and informative video!! As someone who’s doing art at school and feeling constantly drained from it, this made me appreciate how cool art can be, I love the execution of this video as well!!

I would say I allready did Level 2, but I struggle with Level 3. I kind of reached a method, where I allready do this stuff and it is great to actualy see, how I can improve on this. My Designs allways seem so flat, now I know why, thank you very much!

Fun exercise! I guess ir didn’t 100% work because the red light didn’t keep the values as we would have expected. But I got the message and couldn’t agree more. Values, values, values,

Great video! I think the reason why the text on your shirt pops out so much and the light blue background is because you used red light. By using pure red light, you aren't really looking at the value of the color, just how much red it has (b/c all the other colors won't reflect the red light off, but absorb it). which isn't half bad because most lighter colors will indeed look brighter than the darker ones. if we think of in rgb and value as the average of all rgb (techincally our eyes are more receptive to green, then red, then blue but it doesn't really matter), then the red embroidary could be around (255, 0, 0) with a value of 85 but if we just take the red it's 255 so it appears a lot brighter (white basically). in contrast (:D), the light blue, maybe (60, 120, 180) will have an value of 120 but only the red it 60, so it appears much darker. idk if I explained that great but i tried :D

That's a really great explanation! It's so helpful to see things in terms of RGB and value.

Another way you could limit the colors is painting by candlelight! It was one of the assignments I had in art school. The only downside is if the light flickers it could strain your eyes. I like your method better! Good video

@ most western renaissance paintings painted for houses were meant to be viewed by candlelight as well. My teacher said it added to the 3d illusion to view them that way but I don’t know if he read that in an art history essay or just told me that. Either way it’s interesting

I’d love to try this! The end result actually is awesome and the process has so much potential. Any ideas on how to simulate this on procreate ? Just to save the eye strain from a red room. Also the bottom does resemble boobs just slightly. But overall it is WICKED

I think you can just make a bunch of swatches on-screen and then randomize them with a black 'Saturation' layer on top.

i think the reason the light blue appeared alot darker in red light is because the blue, while being bright was also really saturated. i think i heard it on a marco bucci video where he said that the more saturated some colours are the more darker theyll appear on the value scale :>
@ChromaMoma
@ChromaMoma Күн бұрын
I figured it's because blue pigment under white light absorbs every color in the spectrum except for blue light (hence the color). So when it's exposed to red light, it just absorbs it and reflects nothing back which is why it looked black.

I learned a lot from this video cuz I've been trying to learn how to paint, especially motorcycles and formula cars as of late, since I'm entering a manga contest and I've only really tried painting it once, but it wasn't as great as I'd hoped, but the underpaint you did as well as the building up of details and the focus on limited palette and value are great insights. I'm gonna work on it some more and see, but you quite literally saved me.

I was surprised by how much I liked it. The finished painting with the hues looks like an old scifi novel cover from the 70s or something, like some trade cover for an Isaac Asimov novel. I feel like if I did this I'd have to take breaks, though, like setting up a pomodoro timer.

What you said at the end made me think of the "see through" mode on my VR headset, where you can basically see the room around you through the headset thanks to its cameras showing you their live feed. On my headset I guess the cameras are limited to black and white because no colors are visible in that mode, so you essentially see the world in black and white. Great video btw! I'm always super excited when you release something.

VR passthrough seems a great answer to the reverse color blindness glasses! I believe the black and white style cameras in VR headsets are actually infrared cameras. Not sure how similar Value is in IR vs the visible spectrum so that could lead to some unexpected results but that could be interesting too. I wouldn't be surprised if there is already software intended to simulate varying levels of colorblindness for headsets with full color passthrough. I feel like I heard about VR being used to simulate astigmatism and cataracts to help Optometry students better understand their patients.

i liked the idea of a travelers notebook but I don't have the money to buy the leather cover, inserts and accessories so I bought an off brand one 😭I didn't have the plastic inserts because the off brand one didn't make one for the size I chose so from this video I realize how unfit that ziploc would be for me bc I hate the feeling of a bumpy bulky writing surface. I do have a simple journal set up and I could get by with one pen however I think I'll make and handmade pencil case snap on for the outside since I do plan to bring this for my upcoming travel as a sketchbook and journal set up so i'd be needing more items

This is so true. I always loved to draw since i was a child but as i remember at the time of covid i started an art acc and yeah it was good posted alot made alot of friends and all but at the time i lost the fun of drawing i just do it cuz i wanted to show people not for myself so i was soo focused on perfection at the point i gave up and stopped drawing after watching this video ive realised what was the change and why i couldn't really enjoy doing art so yeah im starting all fresh after 3yrs gap Thank you❤
