One important note regarding smogging a transfer vehicle. There are some exceptions for smogging: (See California DMV Form 256). For example, I don't believe a smog test is needed if the vehicle is being gifted to a relative.

Thanks for your in-depth instruction. I've done this a number of times but when gifting a car to my son last year, we didn't put "GIFT" in the purchase price on the back and it held up the transfer. We wouldn't have known until I decided to follow up when my son did not receive the new title. There are so many rules to follow. Thanks again.

Hi. Thank you for your hard work. Question : If i bought a car & signed my name on the front of the pink slip, but the car is going to only be in my sisters name, is it ok that my signature is on the front as the buyer but the back will only have my sisters info ? When i go turn in the pink slip for my sister, do i need to have her i.d. with me or have her present with me or can i turn it in by myself ? Thank you. Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.

OK Questions: There is no need to fill out the milage part on the front if the car is older than a 2011. Correct? What about if I buy a CA car and I live in another State? Do I fill out the back of the title like normal? Also, the top portion, if they do it on line or not at all, do I just remove that portion, before registering it in my State?

I'm about to sell my vehicle.What happens if the seller enters the correct purchase price paid to him/her for the vehicle, but the buyer then lies, by writing down "gift" , so as to avoid taxes? Wouldn't that discrepancy be caught by the DMV?

What if my name (as the owner of the vehicle) is listed as the lienholder? The car is paid off in full and I noticed that yours is blank in that section. Do I need to sign that very bottom portion if my name is listed there, or do I still skip signing that piece?

What about registration? The prior owner had the registration expire and there are penalties. Does transferring title update and renew registration? Or do you need to wait for the title to be reissued before you can re-register?
