I think having a shot strategy during each day is important. If you only film what you plan on using it helps with storage and editing issues.

These are some great points. Aside from you being a great person I followed you because I loved the daily short video. And you provided interesting information and beautiful landscapes. In general you depicted what it is like on a thru hike. Ups, downs (your cry count), etc. a few suggestions to others. I do not watch channels with too much music. To me it destroys the naturalness of the forest. And I do not subscribe to channels when comments are turned off. All in all, you did a spectacular job of bringing your adventures on the trail to your audience. Thank you.

Thanks so much for sharing this - I set out early in March and will be filming and uploading videos here to KZbin. I so enjoyed your videos on your hike last year and all the subsequent ones you have done. My style will be simple, with my videos mostly for family and friends and hopefully to inspire fellow hikers or those who would like to hike. I'm not opposed to it growing into more, but not too set on it doing so either. As an older hiker, I don't imagine I will be doing years of videos to build up the sort of commercial channel that other hikers have, but I think there is much value in sharing our journeys with others.

Have you ever used one of those drones that follow you? I've seen some hiking channels use them and the shots seem to be hit or miss for me if they are using a fisheye lens. All the practical advice if this video so helpful though! Also, just my two cents, it is such strong loser energy for someone to take the time to write hateful comments on your videos. You are literally living your own life and walking in the woods, not bothering anyone. Also, your videos are awesome and have provided some much needed escapism for me (and have pumped me up to try my own thru-hike) so thank you.

This is so helpful thank you! I was watching your videos on the AT before I set off on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I managed to upload a daily short during my hike which was an idea I totally appropriated from you! (Hope you don’t mind! 😅) But even that was so involved at the end of each day! Very time consuming (for me as someone was new to filming and editing) but I’m so glad I did it! I have so much respect that you managed the shorts and the weekly videos while on the trail! I wasn’t even camping and and I only just managed to do the shorts! 👏👏😊 And congratulations on completing the AT! 🎉

Thanks for the tips! I knew you needed a filming permit in the National Parks, but didn't realize it applies to the scenic trails also. There is a bill in Congress S.873 - America’s Outdoor Recreation Act of 2023 that in part would require the NPS to allow filming for youtube. I don't know what the status is hopefully it passes.

I guess I fall into the new to video group. Hats off to you and the other Utube creators. I have filmed some of my AT prep hikes. I started an Instagram channel and probably use that for my AT 2024 hike as far as posting to keep things simple. Appreciate you cover covering these points in this video. Still learning how to create a decent Thumbnail, editing, and how the UTUBE video uploading works. I started to create an UTUBE channel but have not posted yet.

The fifty dollar charger from AT&T store is ten times better than the ones I was using. The I phone 12 is battery is longer lasting than the Androids were. Skin divers in the ‘70’s used a cast pot \ plexiglass lid, o ring lever to snap Kodaks. There should be a product that does the same for ‘phones.

Your AT videos were higher quality than most with thoughtful pre-written audio script and pre-designed video motion. Your AT views in north Pennsylvania, Whites, and south Maine are the best I have seen anywhere. Thank you to Smoke as I feel he walked ahead with your camera and recorded shots where you walked into the camera. Or did you walk ahead, point and start your camera then walk back down trail to restart walk into camera? All these quality shots take extra time and effort when your day is filled trying to cover miles. You never said how many movie making classes you took in college or if you improved your movie skills self-taught?

I got to say it sounds exhausting! I've done a lot of trails so I've always been curious about this kind of thing just to have something for myself to look back on but I think I'll just stick to hiking I'm not sure I have the energy for all that. The first time I did the 80 it was 1989 and we actually save quarters to put in to telephone booths My how things have changed!
