how to film swimming hands-free

I get asked quite often how to film swimming, so I thought I'd share one of my favourite hands-free techniques. i use a tow float, a chest harness and an action camera. I show how to set it up and how to trouble-shoot.

It’s a super useful mount that gives good footage whether you wear it on your chest for an activity like walking, biking, helming a boat or attach it to your towfloat. Glad you enjoyed it.

Hey Mary you don’t need to be tech savvy to work a gopro. People would love to see the environment you live in. It’s a bit of problem solving and working out where it balances best. Hope the lake is warming a little for you. Do you still have ice? 🥶❄️🧊🏊‍♀️😀

Thank you, was interesting! (though I don't intend to film). Interestingly enough here in one of the swimming groups on FB a guy wrote that he constructed a drone- boat that follows him😯. Unfortunately he didn't answer back about technical details... I think this is a typical German over- Engineering 😂

I had thought about making a raft for the camera, but I'd still have to tow it. I just thought I'd use what I have and make it work harder! I have a drone too, but the noise of the propellors bugs me!

Thanks for the inspiration! I like the idea of using a bottle as a keel and my tow bag has a handle I can clamp my camera on. Looking forward to try it out in the Sea of Japan tomorrow🐳

Hi Rach . Thank you for the great tips. If you don’t use a water bottle as a keel in the tow float does it mean the camera is a lot lower so you don’t get as much view from the water when filming? 😊

Hi Rachel! I’d never have thought of using a bottle as a keel or of using the chesty strap. What great ideas! I have a GoPro and have used it in my hand to film me swimming but have often wondered how you fix your camera when it’s filming behind you! I’ll definitely give this a go as I do have a chest strap. Hi Katy, I'm so pleased to hear you're going to give it a go. I do like to film with the cam in my hand too as you have better control over what you're shooting.
