As always I picked up some good tips! Maybe it’s just me but the iPhone mic sounded better than the Boya to my ears. Also, when doing an audio check on the iPhone I find it helpful to use headphones. Easier to pick up clipping or background noise. Good Vid!

Clipping with Boya is a known problem. I'd go for Rode or the Clippy EM172.

That's expected with an under $20 microphone. Perhaps a windscreen would have helped with the clipping.

I guess I didn’t make my comment clear. What I was trying to say is whatever mic you use do your sound check with headphones.
@nolanmolt
@nolanmolt 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Isom! I think in ways the iPhone sounds better and in some ways the Boya does. I think an extra step (that would cost some extra money) would be to use this boya with an audio recorder... This mic is REALLY good for the price. The problem is with the iPhone auto audio levels. Makes it way to loud... That being said, even using an app like filmic pro that allows you to manually set levels on your smartphone will dramatically improve this audio too!

I am using my iPhone and from what I've seen so far I will continue for the foreseeable future. And mine is a 7! Looks great, and I use the Boya mic which sounds fantastic. For lights I went with the Fovitec softbox lights Sean talks about in a video from a year or 2 ago I think. It's a set of 2, got mine for $88 on Amazon using Think Media's affiliate link. Won't be any proof of quality on my setup until this weekend though because my channel is brand new :) but I have tested my equipment and roughly "scripted" some videos to get me started.

Loving everything about these videos and the way in which items are presented in an amusing and knowledgeable yet “none techy” format. So thank you for that. I am a music teacher and use an iPad and iPhone to record 2 shots simultaneously. In post I sync them and produce a picture in picture edit for a headshot and also a close up of the instrument. So far I am using iMovie and since watching your videos have now included zoom, sound effects, music, titles, inserting photos, themes etc. So thank you for that too. So where next ? - please can you do an overview of Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier Pro or indeed any other suggestions for the next step? Thank you. Peter

My YT videos are kind of unique or rather my situation is unique. I'm a senior, I'm a singer, I accompany myself on the ukulele. But I have the added twist of (because of my vision) having to read my music REALLY close. I normally use a Canon EOS 200D with the lens set at 18mm. I sometimes use my Samsung A20 and I really do need to use the back camera, you are so right about that. I really struggle with getting my face and at least the top part (left hand chording) in the shot. When I say I need to be close to the music, I mean about 10-12 inches away. I ususally use my computer monitor because it's big! I struggle with lighting too. When you are 60+, lighting is your enemy. I know that most vlogger and creators on YT tend to be younger. I wish someone would make a video for older folks. I know my situation is rather unique. You can check out any of my vids on my channel (like you REALLY have time for that. Not!) Thanks, this was really interesting.

@@robbiegarnz7732 I think in some video programs Like the Sony one (I'm a PC lady), and others you can separate the audio and then go into Audacity and work on the video. The other thing, and I think that Think Media has done a video about this is you get a wind sock for your mic.
@vierkavojcikova

Exactly, I think you can’t do more about wind or too much noise than use that fluff on mice. Probably as preference to use the mic that is picking from source and blocking the ambience noise (to eliminate traffic noise etc) but not sure which mic it is, if directional type or the other conde.... don’t know the word sorry :) I think the small lavadier mic is not enought for that.

I think this is common and something we just have to get used to. I noticed this early as a kid because I was always fascinated with recording things but right away the first time I heard myself on tape it was like, "who the heck is that saying all that stuff I just said?" Hahaha. For some reason, how we hear our own voices doesn't seem to be the same as how others, including recording devices, hear them. It still weirds me out a little but I'm getting used to it.

I'm here 8 months after this was published! I make videos about my career in digital marketing, being a strategic copywriter and my experiences that got me to where I am today. I just started, but I have a lot of ideas and just want to make videos about them and my experiences. Currently focused on improving the quality of my videos with every upload!
