I’m glad good breeders are being praised instead of being ridiculed by the public. I can’t stand the “adopt don’t shop” movement for this reason. It is perfectly OK to want something specific in a dog. The problem comes in when people just buy the first puppy they see online, thinking they’re getting a good deal, but then later in life the puppy has horrible health conditions and they’re spending thousands on vet bills. If you look for a breeder who shows, you can physically see the lineage of the dog you’re getting. I will never support any breeder who doesn’t do AKC (or equivalent) Conformation events. These events make breeders conform to the standard of pure bred dogs. With out good breeders preserving these breeds, we would be left with mutts.

We are absolutely free to get the dog we want! I also can't stand people who ONLY push the "adopt don't shop". If you want to adopt, go ahead. But don't impose it on others!

Herky The Cavalier right!!! Their excuse is that breeders contribute to shelter populations, but good breeders don’t. They take the puppy back if the owner can’t keep it instead of the dog going to a shelter.
@Sandy335695 жыл бұрын
Conformation isn’t the end all be all. Don’t discount reputable breeders who perform all necessary health/genetic tests who produce puppies who perform the function that the breed was bred for (and doing it well) as well as sport breeders. Both of the latter, when done correctly, breed very structurally sound dogs with good breed type. Personally, I did get my dog from an AKC show breeder (a top breeder in his breed) who also breeds very versatile dogs (something I was looking for), but there are also some very nice breeders who prioritize performance events, but are breeders these top kennels will still recommend if you are looking for a pet or sport dog. In some cases, high level competitive sport dogs do not come from a show breeder. Border Collies are a common breed that has show, sport and working lines and some breeders who breed these lines together to create dogs who are very aesthetically pleasing while also being very competitive agility dogs, for example (because let’s face it, exclusively show bred BCs are not what the very competitive handlers are going for). So while everyone can have their preference, don’t discount the breeders who do not compete in or prioritize conformation. That alone also does not guarantee a quality dog.
@Brynne2215 жыл бұрын
Lilia I understand that completely. I believe whatever type of dog you’re looking for (one for hunting, agility, or farm dog) should be bought from a breeder who does those things. I know there are definitely breeders out there who breed for performance, not just looks, which is perfectly fine. I do not need a dog like that, so I will go to a show breeder. Most of the breeders I have come across that didn’t show also did not do testing, however the breeds I was looking for don’t have working lines. I personally would not trust any other type of breeder for the breeds I’m looking for, because they are not working dogs. I would think much differently if I wanted a lab for duck hunting or a collie for herding. In my case the breeds I was looking for are in the toy group, and also the poodle. The standard poodle does have working lines because they’re sometimes used for hunting, but I specifically wanted to avoid that since I have a house rabbit at home. For large working breeds, definitely go to the breeder who breeds what you want, whether they’re a show person or not. However many breeds do not have multiple lines (working, show, etc.).

Great video idea! There are so many backyard and unethical breeders scamming people for purebreeds as well as designer breeds! There are different health issues that run in particular breeds. Do your research for sure and ask a ton of questions! They should be able to show you health records and be responsive to your questions! You hit on topics well because most people don't know what to look for!

Great video with a lot of awesome information! In regards to heart issues i believe it vary. Here (Denmark) the harts have been improved with up to 70% in the past ten years and not all cavaliers will have this issue. The latest recommendations are to have your pup heart and SM scanned at 18 months and again at 3 and hold out on breeding untill you have thede result. - even if this might “cost you a litter”. Also make sure you breed a younger cav with an older cav so you know more about their health. It’s all about making the risk of illness as low as possible. Being able to Go back 6 generations is worth so much!

Thank you so much for making this video! I've been searching for a Cavalier for about six months and have been on a few wait lists. It feels like forever but now I know that it's the norm... and during a pandemic where many breeders are foregoing breeding at all this season, the wait is even longer. I just have to be patient and trust the process! In the meantime I've been fortunate to meet some wonderful breeders that I've bonded with so I know that one day, there will be a puppy for me! But I wanted to chime in that the average cost of Cavaliers in New England, where I live, is even more expensive; the range is $3-6K from reputable breeders. At least being wait-listed gives you plenty of time to save up! Will definitely invest in pet insurance as well; these little cuties are worth every penny, especially if you're like me and plan to be a dog mom and not necessarily a person mom! It infuriates me that so many (misinformed) people are so judgmental about breeders. I'd be tempted to ask every one of them why they didn't just adopt their children?! Anyway, thank you for all that you do! I look forward to officially joining the Cavalier community one day!

But also 100% agree with you on the breeder you can get an amazing non kc rev breeder too and in the uk you don’t even have to have health tests to register with the kc so it doesn’t always mean that much

Honestly there is no “shame” in getting a non Registered pup I don’t think it’s the registration that makes a pup a good pup you can get incredibly healthy and happy pups from non registered just like you can get unhealthy and unhappy pups from some registered it works both ways it just depends what you want I guess show wise

I would love to get a cavalier. I’ve heard they are super companion/lap dogs, love their owners and enjoy cuddles. I’ve always been very lonely and haven’t been good at making friends. A dog I feel would really help to give me companionship and the cav seems perfect. But I also don’t know if it would be “profitable” to own one if there are so many potential health issues I have to be constantly aware of. Just concerned with costs since I know dogs can already be so expensive. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your great video!

LOVED at his video!!! All of the information was super useful!!! Just one thing with the health testing, if the parents are genetically tested and clear it’s impossible for the puppies to get those diseases currently there is no “genetic” test for sm/cm, mitral valve, patella and the eye (I really hope this makes sense) so all of the above are scans, screenings and MRI scans... All of those haven’t been proven to be genetic so there is no genetic test and having clear results as you said doesn’t mean your puppies are clear... But Curley coat, dry eye and episodic falling are all genetic conditions (hope this still makes sense) so if the parents do not have the gene there is no way the puppy can get it Basically what I’m trying to say is genetic tests you can be certain non genetic tests such as scans, screenings MRIs etc you can’t be certain I hope that helps somewhat
@herkythecavalier5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input Ellenor! I had asked this question to our vet and she said they don't do genetic tests on cavaliers... which I find odd. So the way they "screen" for these diseases is just through scans and specialist consultations!
@twinkletoestilly30625 жыл бұрын
Wow that’s so strange!! In the uk we have the genetic testing for Curley coat, dry eye and episodic falling Maybe it’s just a uk thing
@Sandy335695 жыл бұрын
Herky The Cavalier Yeah, a lot of people travel a bit to go to the specialists that will perform the genetic testing. Sometimes people even do them at dog shows, when there’s a clinic at the show (for example, an eye clinic, cardiac clinic, etc etc) which is also often less expensive, but still just as reputable.
@tropmama76265 жыл бұрын
Love the new picnic-like background. So many good points in this video. Cavaliers are the most lovable ❤️ and affectionate dogs, unfortunately too many genetic issues. It bothers me too when people try to force the “adopt don’t shop”, specially when is your family 🤣

Rhonda Carrol in Indiana! she is just amazing and caring. I putbin my paper work and a down deposit. we wanted a Female Tri. when the time came, she delivered our new baby by vehicle all the way to Ca. Just know this, if you see a dog like a Cav. for 700-1,000-1,500, its not real 90% of the time, never pay by any app. use a CC only. YOU WILL GET SCAMMED! our baby was 3,200 and she is worth every single red cent!
@davidrobinson74224 жыл бұрын
Just a note to prospective owners of Cavaliers. We found out after we adopted our Cav that 60% of them will develop cardiac problems by age ten. We fed our little girl high quality dog food, supplemented by fresh vegetables and occasional fruit. She is walked 4-5 times a day, and plays chase also several times a day. Despite the best of care, genetics won out and we nearly lost her due to congestive heart failure last week. I don't want to be a downer, but I would urge people to check out prospective problems before you lose your heart to their prospective health problems.
