I hired a contractor to do a major reno job and at the end of it all, I wish I had just done it myself. Biggest thing ive found is that trades are there to bang it off as quickly as possible for the maximum profit, nobody seems to care about quality anymore. the framers think the drywall guy can fix his crap, drywall guy thinks mudder can fix his crap, mudder says the finish carpenter can fix it, finish carpenter thinks what he does is good enough, and the customer is left holding the bag at the end and paying twice.

I am right there with you. My “contractor” (project manager) hired a roofer. Roof wasn’t covered in rain after shingles came off. Everything wet! Attic, insulation, ceiling, walls, light fixtures shorting out, cracks in walls! They put underlayment on wet roof sheathing saying they replaced 53 sheets - not! You can see the water stained, rusty nail old sheathing! And they walked away! Plus they signed my name off for payment!! I’m in the process of hiring a lawyer.

This video confirms what I have experienced over the last 38 years or so.... which is why I have pretty much done ALL my own work for the last 25 or so.... with a few exceptions.... roofing, copper work, et al. Even plumbing and electric I do the work and then hire a master to check my work and sign off on it under his ticket and liability insurance policy. He doesn't have to even get dirty, makes a pretty penny for his small time investment, and I save a metric crap tonne of money overall. When I find a good installer or tradesman, I make that person a friend and trusted advisor. I treat them fairly, and develop a long term relationship. As a manager/businessman my whole adult life, I learned that you are only as successful as the folks you put on your team. Thanks, Jeff!

Hi Jeff, I have been watching your videos for quite a while and I recently joined as a member a few months ago but, this is my first post. I just wanted to thank you for all of your videos but, especially for this one! I have been trying to manage all aspects of my kitchen (plus) remodel myself after feeling taken advantage of by my contractor on other recent projects. Several months in, I finally caved when my arms were in so much pain from doing everything myself. I felt like such a failure having to call him back in to help but, after three days of four guys on the job, they are still working on the rough in changes I wanted (gas, plumbing and electrical) and I realize now there was no way I could have done it all myself. This video helped me realize there is still a lot that I CAN do myself and I have learned so much from you that I feel more empowered dealing with my contractor and setting realistic expectations. I can do more of the fun projects and leave the more difficult, heavy and time consuming things for him and his guys to do under my direction. I’m not sure how to apply my membership badge to my profile but, it is one I will proudly wear once I figure that out! Thanks for all that you do for us DIYers out here. Your videos have been such a tremendous (and enjoyable) resource. Tracy Singh, Nurse Attorney, DIYer & Proud Home Renovision DIY Member :)

I needed a retaining wall with a French drain to stop my lawn from turning into a marsh. I hired two guys off of Craigslist. They promised the job at a great price. Then I found out they didn't build the trench as deep as was discussed. I talked to them about it and they stopped coming to work for over a week. When I saw them again, I told them to stop coming and offered a partial compensation. They were furious saying that they spent 2/3rd of the agreed upon project cost on materials already. They stormed out and lurked at the edge of my property. I finally agreed to pay them the original cost of the project for a 1/3rd completed project that I have to rip out and start from scratch. I didn't want to pay them a dime at this point but I also feared for the safety of my family and property. I ended up doing the project myself. The retaining wall material alone costed twice as much as what those two guys promised to do the project for. At least the result has stood the test of time. I have never been successful at hiring/outsourcing. The biggest take away from this video was the "gut feeling" that you can depend on them. Now I have to find a way to practice this instinct.

@@saulgoodman2018 after I kicked them out, I needed to head to work leaving behind my family and property. I don't know how I can protect myself without paying them. I was a bit skeptical about your delivery after watching your videos only once before. Seriously I applaud your style and approach. You put some stuff in perspective for me - I luckily have the best situation with my current renovations installer guy/ex boyfriend/old friend! He’s a electrician by trade but can plumb, foundation repair, carpentry (attentive to detail), paint, drainage, precise moulding cuts, so much more BUT age sucks at taping/mudding, thin flooring and cleaning up his garbage and tools! I think I have a sweet deal - my house is getting major renovations since Jan 28 and everyday pretty much steady during quarantine and still happening! I really liked this vid Thanks

In each house, I've done minor DIY stuff myself. As well, I hiring for larger renovations and landscaping. In your terms, I've usually hired either trades or installers. You're absolutely spot-on about the human element. Hi Jeff. I have been following your videos for a considerable time now. I live in North East China, have been here for 12 years, but I hope, Coronavirus permitting, to return home later this year to build my house on a plot of land I've purchased in the Highlands of Scotland. I convinced myself that I could handle some, well, much of the work myself and thereby save the aggravation of dealing with strangers who may or may not actually be skilled and reliable. I have debated this over and over again and came to the conclusion that a few specialist tasks need to be performed by certified "experts" electricians and the like but otherwise I'm going to have a go myself (with the help of some friends too of course). Time is no real object as I will be quitting work to do this build anyway . This video, in particular, but also many of your other videos have been a great inspiration for me. Cheers.

Thanks for this video, Jeff! You’ve covered almost everything that us normal homeowners wouldn’t even consider! I don’t think too much about referrals from friends if they’re happy. But I’m not going to hire a fence expert to renovate my bathrooms. I have a lot of work to be done on my home, most of which I can’t do myself, when I consider the cost analysis (Cost of tools I need to buy - and may not use again, the slow rate of my own progress due to lack of knowledge and experience, etc.). I figure if I can hire someone who has the tools, time and manpower, I’ll usually get better work, quicker, from them, than I can do on my own. But this information is invaluable, and I’ve saved this for future work. (I have a leaking, sliding glass door, that takes the brunt of the weather, so I’m extra cautious about the product AND the contractor. If anyone has a recommendation for a QUALITY slider, I’m all ears!) ✌🏻

Hey, Jeff. Thanks for this man. I must say, I follow your channel for more than 2 years, I think, I watched so much videos, I feel like I know you personaly :D This part that you said: "Do yourself, and get pro to to some job for you", I just done that. I'm doing House "add-on" extension. I cut all rebar, bent it, made all colums, dig out trenches for concrete foundations, and I'm hiring the guy, just to check my forms and some help with concrete pour. It's almost 7 cubic meeters of concrete, and around 20 meteres of foundations. :D But must say, watching you channel, gave me a lot of "Go ahead, do it yourself". with this serius stuff. From woodworking, painting rooms, electronics, electric instalations, small applieances fixed, got into fixing some small stuff on cars. Last year, I hired some guy, and just like you said, I didn't know his personal issues, and it related to lot of yelling (from his side to his helper) and bad work. Thanks again Jeff, my first videos will be "airing" in next few months, so it would be great, if you can look it up, and take some good vs bad stuff, that I had done, to help out this great community. Keep the good work comming. :D

There is a fourth option, small retail business that is owner operator. With small overheads, usually one person owns the store, estimate the job and check on subcontractors at job sites from time to time, fix issues in a timely manner. in most cases a small group of good installers work for them. I have run this business model for 15 years most of the time customers are happy.

Loved the video! We contacted a contractor, a tradesman, and an installer to update our stairs, they are prefab with pine risers and treads that were previously carpeted. We were told it would cost us 8K-10K per staircase to redo. (Seriously thinking about using a whole lot of wood filler...but my husband said no way). That was without adding the under stair pullout storage that is becoming popular. We have 2 staircases in our townhome and are feeling like we are out of our league on this. (Which is saying a lot because we have renovated 2 half baths and retiled our entire first floor...I am an enthusiast). We would love a video about staircases and such. If you are in need of place to film a video on stairs and staircases, we volunteer as tribute. :)

Real homeowner special. It should've been pretty easy to tell that was the situation the first time you looked at the house eh?

Thanks Jeff, I am reasonably new to your channels and love your approach to issues and teachings. The idea of having some kind of contractor list, would be a great idea, if you can get enough contractors on the list. The question would be who decides if they are good enough to be on it or stay on it. Was there a bad report by a bad homeowner? etc. A few years back, I hired a guy for what wasnt that small a job and he hired trades to complete jobs inside my job. I won:t say I hired the right guy to start but he certainly did not hire the right people either and most of them had their own businesses. These included plumbers, electricians, and roofers. This job was at my summer home, I was making my retirement home and since I could only be there on weekends could not stay close enough to monitor the job site. Since then I have been replacing or fixing almost everything that was done, either myself or trying to find someone i trust to finish it. Of course material issues and Co-vid hasnt helped in that process either. Enough ranting, love your videos, keep up the good work,

Can I pick you up or fly you over to my newly purchased house in New Jersey to renovate it? 😁😁Your amazing and very knowledgeable keep up the good work. I’m trying to have my husband watch your videos so he can brush up on his Reno skills. 😆😆 Thank you for these interesting videos.

This is a tiny bit out of scope, but it relates. I know you mentioned roofing, but do you have any plans for any DIY gutter install videos? Or do you believe they are a 'Hire a contractor' level project? Looking to install gutters where there previously were none, and the quotes I'm getting are WAY out there, even considering labor/taxes (US here, so the taxes are still a punch to the gut, but aren't QUITE as much as CA). Thanks for all your videos, and the horrors they've encouraged me to inflict upon my family :)

Hey Jeff, really enjoy those live tour show. I need a new roof and I’m done with asphalt shingle. I had a hard time making my 25 years shingles last 15. I live in the Ottawa region. Would you know where in Ottawa i can by metal with all the flashing to do my roof that i would install myself ?

Hey Jeff, I know the tour was cancelled, but I was wondering if you had a chance to hit Cincinnati while it was still going on? What I’m trying to figure out is if the tour comes back, if we can expect you to hit Cincinnati or skip it if you already hit it prior. Love to have a chance to come see you if you come by! Best, Matt

Jeff. When deciding to do it yourself vs a installer, trade or business. How much do you consider "paying yourself" to see if it's worth taking time from your schedule or just hiring someone?

It's kinda like a car dealership kinda situation. They wine and dine you to get your money then they run smh. The car dealership used to always try and get me to buy a new car eveytime I went there until I got tired of it and flat out told them I'm not interested in buying another car with a 10 year note attached to it no thanks. I told them unless your giving it to me for free no thanks then they finally stopped it. I totally agree hire yourself.

I went with a business. They broke the kitchen corner base cabinet on delivery and only delivered half the order.... which set back everything including all our other tradies, then tried to put the delays and mess ups back on me, which didn't work cus i am stubborn as hell. in short i will never be going with a business again it was a horrific experience. also to edit, your tilling videos where amazing and gave me the courage to do it myself with my partners help, he really didnt want to do it but after i showed him your video he was much more receptive our tradies even complimented our work :D

You just explained the situation I am currently experiencing hiring a buisness. Been stuck in a kitchen remodel for 6 months and it's a complete disaster. Countertops done wrong missed the cut for the sink and also misdrilled the faucests, maybe due to a (crooked drywall job), crooked drywall job because the guys before him didn't shim the walls right, flooring problems because the floor was left a mess after the slab work. etc etc.... Right now the Contractor is trying to figure out what to do about the crooked walls that already have cabinets installed on them and my damaged $1200 sink before they re-do the coutnertops.

Oh man I just found out my business isn’t a real business 😢 It’s true, I use to work for builders, work kept coming payment was always months behind. It’s leverage to keep you there until they decide they don’t need you anymore.

What’s the best way to learn the skills before buying your own home? I love watching your videos and learning this way, and plan on buying a house that will require a lot of renovations because I think I’ll really enjoy making the space as I want it, but I don’t want to get into something that needs renovations to find out I’m really bad at it 😂. I’m planning on volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, but I don’t think they let random volunteers do much as far as skills are required.
