In the 80s reverb was sting and used like a slap back echo. What I’m seeing today is reverb with a lower mix and long tail. I love the Studio One Room Reverb. Haven’t found a use for the Mixverb yet. 😃

Hall for ballads, plate and hall or room for rock. Don't be afraid to have more than one reverb on any track and also multiple delays.

Nice. I had assumed that running the HPF before the reverb would make the reverb work less hard. But maybe I’m conflating that with EQ before compression?

Great video, Joe! Can You or anyone explain what the negative numbers mean in pre-delay and length. I have never seen this in any of the other reverbs. Thanks a lot!

I have quite a few reverb plug-ins, and more than 90% of the time it's the Studio One Room Reverb on Plate setting, and I adjust the send, pre or post fader. I always do the Abbey Road reverb EQ: high pass at 300 Hz and low pass at 10 Khz, with a 48 dB octave on both, placed before the plug-in-never fails.

As always, Joe has some great info. I recently set up a delay/reverb FX send where I'm ducking it to come up after the dry audio goes quiet with the stock compressor. In this FX channel, I'm using Studio One Analog Delay going into a Relab LX480 Essentials. I have this reverb as a vocal plate setting (forgot the exact name). I came across something called the Abbey Road trick, where you'll EQ via high pass about 600 Hz and low pass about 10 KHz. It seems to work for what I wanted out of this FX channel.

Plate reverbs add energy so they're good for rock, ballads hall reverbs work well, and don't be afraid to use several reverb types on one track. My default template has 3 reverbs on FX tracks so I can send various amounts anywhere - saves on CPU too.

Can you do a video explaining all the knobs in room reverb? It has really obscure knobs for a reverb, and is a bit hard to dial for that reason
@twinsprucestudios Жыл бұрын
Great video Joe!! I have a question... would it not be more beneficial to EQ the lows out of your signal PRIOR to the reverb plug-in, instead of after? I would think you wouldn't want those low frequencies hitting the reverb at all... avoiding mud altogether. Just my friendly 2 cents!!
@stevenpeterson9735 Жыл бұрын
That's certainly what I do and it's actually recommended. Putting the EQ in before the reverb cleans up what is going to the next processor in the chain, so that you're not processing unwanted signal. But, it's also an option to apply the EQ post reverb. There are no wrong methods in recording... only better ones. Right? :)

Thanks, yes Reverb can keep you busy. Lately, I have been using more of the presets than I used to, at least for a good starting point. I can sometimes think I have my song sounding fantastic, with the Reverb perfect in my mind, but then the next day, it sounds like crap. You have to get away from it for a while.

Joe, would it be better to place the EQ before the reverb, so those low frequencies will not be generated via the reverb because it "hears" a filtered signal source?
@chrislombardi8870 Жыл бұрын
Question- If you click on room reverb, you are offered a number of different scenarios....ie.....small studio, large studio, hallway, etc. In recording a single acoustic guitar, what would you suggest I use? Thank you for your videos. I've learned a lot from you!

@dougharris5660 Жыл бұрын
Hi Joe and thanks. Question: 2 people asked why not put the hpf before the reverb. that is what i thought before reading the comments. nice to see others had the same question, but there was one reply it is better after with no explanation as to why. Any one want to explain the pros and cons. thanks
@wumpoleflack Жыл бұрын
I think we add EQ after the reverb because reverbs will splash audio up and down the spectrum. So even if you limit the input EQ, the reverb may inject low frequency components. By EQing after the reverb you're making sure that nothing below your rumble frequency gets throught.

Also, I think that the ebb and flow of things is a constant. Probably because, a young-un won't like his or hers Dad's (or Mom's) music, so if Dad or Mom liked music with reverb, then that won't be something pleasing or cool!!!!

I have been putting reverb in the Inserts rather than the Sends all these years. Is this wrong?
@f-unfairstudiotime Жыл бұрын
Not wrong, but somewhat unusual and perhaps a bit counter-productive. The traditional way to do it, as was usually and still is done on a real mixing console, is to use sends, with different channels/signals sending to one or several reverb outboard units, in your case to plugins. This way there are several advantages: -using the same reverb for some separate sources (for example the various drum elements of a drumkit, or backing vocals, or multiple guitar parts) sounds more natural and more logical to the ear -the above said also is much less CPU intensive for your computer, compared to using multiple reverb plugins on inserts for every single thing -the mix % control on a reverb plugin is not the best way to dose reverb on a signal or source (because if for example you want to put less reverb on a vocal in the verses but more in the choruses, automating the mix % and altering it will also change the volume of your vocal, which of course you don't want because it would ruin your mix, and also, using the mix % doesn't allow for pre or post fader sends, which can be used for example for making sources sound more far away in a mix or bring them closer and further with automation, thus giving the illusion of depth) -as mentioned in this video, you can place an eq plugin in the reverb path, using it to shape both the sound and the reverb itself, to eliminate unnecessary rumble buildup or sibilance and hiss in the reverb (actually, placing an eq plugin before the reverb plugin will enable you to cut the lows of the signal or the highs going into the reverb but to leave the reverb tail free to ring out naturally, while placing the eq plugin after the reverb plugin like he does in this video will tame the lows or highs from the already reverberated full signal, which sounds different). This can't be done if the reverb is on an insert, because the eq plugin would be cutting away at the whole signal, not just affecting the reverb. -it is much easier to see at glance, balance or change reverb levels in a mix if they are on their own returns and proper faders, than with the fiddly mix % control, which looks and is different on every plugin, depending on how its GUI was deigned. Hope this helps! AF
