Thank you for this! I brought the comet's data into stellarium with no problem following your instructions. Presently my one and only forecasted clear night coming up is the early morning of JAN 15 here in Ohio, USA. This will help me locate the comet more quickly than just scanning the whole area between Corona Borealis and Hercules.

Just found your channel Kristine and love your presentation. Very clear and helpful! I used Stellarium on my iPhone last night in clear Bortle 8 skies, and 33 degrees latitude. It was around 10pm. I had a general idea of where to look for the comet with my binoculars, but just couldn’t find it. Dang! I’ll try again tonight.

YT brought your video to my attention. I photographed C2022 E3 the previous couple mornings (about 2am) from Borrego Springs, CA. It served as a test of Benro Polaris pointing and tracking, first time with 300mm, second morning with 510mm. On both occasions after initial alignment entered current comet coordinates (from Sky Safari Pro in my case rather than Stellarium) and the comet was nicely framed in the very first exposure. The comet is invisible naked eye, and barely visible in binoculars. The BP passed the pointing test and tracking was acceptable in 15 sec exposures, at both 300 and 510mm, not so much at 30 sec. I had not considered C2022 E3 a candidate for a landscape composition but you have changed my mind, maybe tomorrow morning in the wee hours.

Cool, thanks for this! I just heard about this comet a few minutes ago, and now I've installed Stellarium, followed your easy-to-follow (thanks!) instructions on getting the comet data for it, and checked out where it's at in the sky from here. I probably won't attempt any photography, but I do think I'll go look for it with some binoculars in hand. Thanks! (And, looks like super useful tips for if/when I'm attempting photography of such things again, too! So double thanks!)

Around 5:00, you mention customizing the comet details to show only the magnitude and altitude/azimuth. How does one do this? Can it be done in Stellarium?
@KristineRosePhotography
@KristineRosePhotography Жыл бұрын
Oh yes! Absolutely. This is functionality in Stellarium. When you search for an object or click on one in the starfield it will populate the information at the top left of the screen. For me it has always been WAY too much info. So I customized it to what you see there. Just go in to the same configuration window I brought you in to get the comet, but at the top click on the second tab "information" and then you can check below what you want to be shown.

Great video! What tracking setting would you use on a star tracker for a comet? Just standard star tracking with a shortish exposure?
@KristineRosePhotography
@KristineRosePhotography Жыл бұрын
Depends on a variety of factors including your focal length and alignment. I've had students use the solar tracking option to get a bit longer exposure and also to shoot/stack separately for the comet/stars. Start a bit shorter than what you would normally do at your reg s/s for the focal length you're using then test from there!

@KristineRosePhotography
@KristineRosePhotography Жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris! Yes, I will shoot this on my iOptron Skyguider Pro since at 200mm it would be a very short exposure without the tracker. I might also try a wider field at 135mm as I've seen an image with that focal length and I liked the more widefield photo.

Thank you for the tutorial Kristine. For whatever reason I haven’t been able to add C/2022 E3 into Stellarium. Maybe my version is too old. I have a photograph of what I am pretty sure is ZTF taken in a very dark sky Feb 4th in the wee hours of the morning. The tail looks very extensive. Is there a way to send you a copy of the photographed to get confirmation? :-)

Great video Kristine. Here in France north of Lyon, we will try to shoot the comet starting the third week of january, hoping the permanent cloud cover we had over the past two months will diseapear. Question is how much of the tail (2.5 degrees of arc ?) will we be able to get. My equipement (camera ASI 294 Mc + 550 mm triplet APO) has a FOV 2° x 1°21'...
@KristineRosePhotography

I don't shoot with a scope (my focus is landscape astro - including some deepscapes) but my friend who does said that you'll be too tight with your gear to get it all in. He said he's shooting his crop with his 550 which will be a bit wide but easy to crop in a little. Good luck shooting!!

In your ephemeris features go to "stars and star trails" - though you don't 100% need to do that part, I just like it because it puts up the yellow line for where Bootes is and that's close to where the comet is right now. It's a visual on the map to remind me that I have the azimuth setting correct (vs oops I moved it)

I use the SkySafari app to see where stuff is. SkySafari is a great app in my opinion, though so far I haven't been able to see it cause I think it's just out of view from my backyard and the moon's light is drowning out what visibility of it there is. Stellarium isn't bad either though.

I know a lot of people who use Skysafari. I pretty much use Planit Pro for my planning, but sometimes it take a little bit to get an update so I'll use Stellarium when I need to. It's also nice that Stellarium on desktop is free and lets you do so much!

@@KristineRosePhotography hello! Well, it's important to emphasize the greek letter names of the stars or nearest proper name of stars closest to the comet because its not that easy to see unless youre in a remote dark sky and even then you have to know exactly which stars it is near. One half degree, or the full moon, is the size of your index fingernail surface area so the comet coma is a fraction of that , i believe, havent checked the angular size of the comet nucleus but this thing is tiny. The tail is 2-5 degrees, on the other hand.
