How to find Github Repos to contribute to... (Relevant to you!)

In this video I want to really quickly show you an extremely powerful search and filter functionality that is built into github.com that allows you to find codebases (code repositories) that are of interest to you, that are relevant to your skill-sets or just repos that are easy for beginners or in specific programming languages!
As there are so many open source codebases out their in the world (a lot of which, including some of the bigger names, are hosted on Github (like NodeJs, Linux & Kotlin)) you need a good way of filtering the masses in order to find repositories that are within your skill set or within a specific programming language or perhaps you are new to open source contribution and you want to find a repository that enables newbies to get involved (as open source should be for everyone!).
Let me show you an already existing and easy to us tool, that actually not many people know about or use to it's full potential, that is already built in and fully available on the Github website...

Now that's a much harder problem to solve! My Brief answer would be to instead go wildly different, try searching for some project that is diametrically different to the usual projects you search for our in a completely different programming language in order to also give yourself something to learn! Often if I find myself bored then I'll reach for something new to learn and try to really dig in deep and learn about it and for me that works to remove the boredom or at least get me interested...hope this helps somehow! @@BenKadel If you land a job in web development, are you forced to do projects you don't enjoy? Because at home you could search for what you want then contribute to it, but I think a lot of web development just makes me lose interest so I'm put off by a career in it. I'm having trouble getting stuck in and staying interested, so think it's not the right choice. When I download a project I'm just unsure of how I can edit/contribute to it?

Hey Nulldrone! So the first part is quite tough actually, if and when you land any job in development there will for sure be projects (more often tasks within a project) that arent super interesting and make you question your choices, but i have always believed that this is probably the same in any other job, that there will be moments that turn you off from it or are boring or that you dislike, at least I think its like that with other job. HOWEVER the most important thing to hear is that aslong as you enjoy the overall job, for example you get a kick out of being creative and clever with your coded solutions and thinking outside the box to be super effecient in your solution OR if you enjoy creating, i always thought programming feels a little bit like art, to me at least, I guess that shows me im in the right job. Your job has to be at least 70 ish percentage something that you enjoy doing. So simple answer to this question is that if you enjoy devving overall and in general then its NOT the wrong choice to follow a career in it... Hope that helps! And the final point about downloading a project and not knowing how to edit and contribute to it, id say 2 things... 1. learn about git (I have a video series dedicated to that) as that will show you how to truely work with these kind of open source projects to make the most of your editing time. 2. On most "big" ish projects there will be a file called "CONTRIBUTE.md" that will explain to first time contributors how they should get involved to that project. Hope all that helps! GOod luck!

@@BenKadel Yeah for example gatsby has a contributing file: github.com/gatsbyjs/gatsby/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md But the problem i'm having is understanding the code structure of the project, how do I understand what each aspect of the project does? I'm still in the dark about how I could make edits to this project to learn. The folders are: .circleci .github .yarn benchmarks docs e2e-tests examples integration-tests packages peril plop-templates rfcs scripts starters On an issue it has the button new issue, do I use that? Or do I download the project code then make edits, then reupload the specific file?
