RVing Life Now - Not Sailing Brick House!

Күн бұрын

After finding great crew, finally, Rebecca Childress nearly finishes her 14 year circumnavigation aboard SV Brick House, but stops 100 miles short in Great Inagua. 100 more miles to go!
Josh finds our anchor chain has twisted in to a giant knot and has to unravel it. He shows how he does this, and explains the two models of the Mantus Anchor Chain hooks / snubbers that we have on this sailboat. She sets up the Iridium GO to take over the datahub and they put up the running pole and depart offshore for the Bahamas!
At least now Rebecca has found very good crew, who carry on with her for the rest of her circumnavigation, making the rest of the ocean passage very pleasant.
Rebecca has felt the great burden, responsibility and risk of making sure her boat is seaworthy and safe! For better or worse, it is paying off... she is almost there now...has almost finished her 14 year circumnavigation . What will come next for Rebecca Childress and her sailing life? Honestly..until she finishes the circumnavigation, she is just for once, trying to not think too far head and just enjoy the last few ocean miles she will sail...this year...

Wow, I'm living vicariously through your fantastic adventure. Thanks. I do believe you should write a book when your circumnavigation is finally done. I got my Blue water sailing legs from Hank and OPO back when he first started his gig. I probably have almost as many crazy experiences sailing as crew through OPO, and I hated being captain as well. I've been off the water now; as I pretty much have aged out. The constant bracing is incredibly fatiguing anymore. That doesn't help the long just to be on the water. Thanks for sharing yours.

I know why Patrick removed the keeper off the Mantus M1. I have that same snubber. It is a pain in the butt to lean over the bow pulpit to open up the keeper and remove that snubber, especially if it is rolly at anchorage. I had an anchor swivel to reduce anchor twist on my prior sailboat. I do not have one on the Valiant 40 but after seeing your experience I may add one!

We have a swivel but maybe I need to give it a once over! But good to have that mystery solved! It’s only really needed when it goes slack like in a reversing current

Logic tells me that every time you (not the boat) add a 'circle' to the chain, dropping the chain will reverse out that twist zeroing out the sum. In fact, as with cordage, you can induce a twist every other loop so it does flake out evenly. Thoughts? Evidence? Experience ? (I have none other than landlubber ropes, cords and hoses), all these behave the same. But is SEEMS like simple physics.

Our chain also gets twisted even with the mantus swivel. Over time a twist is able to skip past the gypsy and then add up eventually in the anchor locker. Flaking it does help but takes time when weighing anchor. We have the M1 hook and i wonder if it helps create a twist since it does tend to wrap around the chain. Buy a few new plastic gates since they are not making them any more now that the M1 hook is discontinued. We have five (5) I really do not like the rubber thing on the new M2 hook. It is not secure enough for me. We scooted on past Brunswick as we ventured up through Georgia along the ICW trail and though about you there. This year we are trying to see all the things we have missed the last few years but it would take years to actually see all the things on the ICW. I hope you do give the "ditch" a run because it is actually a lot of fun due to of all the neat little places to stop every few miles. Even the Georgia wilderness is breathtakingly beautiful if you aren't in a hurry and know how to read a good chart. Blue water is fun but inshore waterways can be just as rewarding. Jekyll and Cumberland islands just south of you are really fun. If you go to Cumberland the "Plum Orchard" anchorage is really nice and secluded while one accesses the northern part of the island including the plum orchard mansion tour.

Thanks for the anchorage info. I think the ditch could be a lot of fun and after some rest who know what I will do… Interesting about your Mantus hook and swivel. Will have to give that some thought.

I wonder if letting our chain fall in spirals into the locker below has any effect like you said in the video. Our chain tends to fall into the inner forward fold of the bow before tumbling down and the pile needs to be scooped aft a couple of times or it builds up to the hawsehole. There isn't enough drop there because of... compromises in how things are laid out for lack of space. Perhaps being more careful to flake it as it goes aft and further down would help. When the chain is dropping fast with the anchor the twists might ride out and up the hawsehole and right over the gypsy since it is vertical and not horizontal..

I’m glad you are glad. If you can figure all that out from a video, then you are doing well. I’m horrible at firing out stuff like that from even video calls and phone calls. You just never know til you meet a person in the flesh. But I’m glad you managed to work it out from the video because my last crew was perfect.
@aussiepilgrim8620
@aussiepilgrim8620 Жыл бұрын
I actually figured it out during a short conversation at an anchorage long before ever seeing this vid. My comment here was about how glad l was that l did that and it was more for all of those people, who watch your videos, who constantly and repeatedly kept on at me to get in touch with you every damn time they saw me just because my wife died a few years back. Figuring such things out is easy, by the way, you just decide what you do and do not want in your life and then set yourself rules which you never break for anyone or anything. It is a social extension of single-handed cruising really. Fair winds and safe passages to you.
