Thanks for letting us know how you’re doing. You are amazing, and will pull your 50% when you can. Don’t beat yourself up when you just can’t. That’s sailing. I can’t imagine how it must feel to leave SA-all things considered. I like Michael because he knows how to laugh instead of getting angry at work that has to be done regardless. That’s healthy. The change of person is scary, but you’ve chosen well. Much love and support. 🌺

Rebecca, I just discovered your channel and want to let you know what an inspiration you are! A TRUE LEGEND! I'm 38 and have lost both my parents. After my mom died I refitted a 31 ft. camper trailer replacing everything and making it a home for me, my 2 dogs and a parrot. I set out to explore the continental US, that journey has come to an end and as I set my sights on the next chapter of my life-Which will be sailing I find the challenges to be a bit more foreign and seemingly insurmountable but draw inspiration from you and your story. The dogs and bird have all crossed the rainbow bridge to join my parents. Being alone sometimes makes things seem even harder but you finding Michael and me finding your channel has reminded me the universe and God work in magical mysterious ways so i will never give up on my goal. I wish you the happiest of lives and the most amazing adventures! Please keep sharing and be safe out there! BTW my parents are also named Rebecca and Michael.

Patrick would (I'm sure is) very proud of you. That nagging voice you hear every now & then is his guidance. I think you are the new Captain of Brick House & you are & will be more than your 50%. I know that feeling of responsibility when you leave harbour - watch any skippers face , but trust yourself & enjoy.

Watching Michael througout this episode (my first with him involved) showed me, very early on, that he is a gem of a partner, for ANY endeavor, especially one with the challenges of sailing, and the added benefit to you, HE IS VERY EASY ON THE EYES! I'm sure you also see many of Patrick's best attributes in him every day. Best of luck to you both. I look forward to a restart of your regular episodes. We need you to achieve our own vicarious sailing aspirations!

thanks - I see some of Patrick in here, but in reality- polar opposites...
@jamesceastep88743 жыл бұрын
@@RVLifeNOW Rebecca. I hope all goes well, but I would like to suggest that you need to keep Patrick in your soul, but to recognize Michael in first person (you), not third (he, Michael) especially when he is standing there behind the camera acting as your video crew. Sometimes we don't recognize what wonderful people we have at our side until we loose them. Don't let that happen with Michael. Speaking from experience, of course. If MIchael is the polar opposite to Patrick, embrace those differences. Diversity is one of the spices of life. Who can't appreciate spice? Let's see some more outstanding videos of your adventures, but now, with Michael. Fondly and with encouragement, Jim

When the head breaks it automatically becomes the top priority on a boat short of keeping it afloat and navigating. It seems to always happen when there is a nice day and fun activities planned -or in the middle of another project with the boat already torn up! Sometimes having a second head is a nice thing to have. A bucket doesn't really cut it in port -especially at a nice marina. If you ever want to be invited back, at least. I used to be a commercial electrician before retiring and cruising. I have seen and even participated in a lot of bad and stupid mistakes that caused major damage and even injuries in the job. When people are exhausted and have been working hard and pushing their limits is when something small but dumb gets overlooked. It can easily be something like leaving a ladder in the wrong place near moving machinery, or putting a wire through the wrong opening. Or leaving a wrench or screwdriver inside a large high voltage switch gear waiting to fall between two busbars when things vibrate a little or a heavy 2000A switch is thrown and snaps shut, shaking the whole works. Been there, done that, had to fill out the incident report form. Experienced and competent workers are not immune to this even knowing and having seen "it all" and being constantly on the lookout for these things. Fatigue and stress are killers on any worksite and it is what bites you in the ass when trying to beat a deadline or a tight schedule. Mistakes get made, especially when rushed to finish a job. We have a saying that we never energize or start heavy equipment on a Friday afternoon. It is always a recipe for disaster trying to make a deadline like that. Waiting until Monday morning after going over every inch of the work again to visually inspect and hands-on check all important components before startup almost always turns up something that was done wrong or was not fully completed. Sometimes it is little stuff that isn't going to cause a disaster, but on others it catches something that definitely would or could. Even professionals screw things up, as you know, especially when on a deadline. It might not be your deadline -younnever know what Deadlines the people you hire to do a job are under from their bosses back at the office. Deadlines are just as dangerous on a job site as they can be in passage-planning and cruising. They push people into taking marginal options & making iffy decisions for the sake of keeping to a timeline and making said deadlines. When tired and stretched, even the most competent among us turn into complete idiots, and the worst thing is we can't even always properly recognize it is happening to us. It is similar to being intoxicated. Taking that extra day to go over every inch of a project pays off as it did for you checking on your rigging work. I am so grateful that you caught these mistakes before they caught you. A bladeset on a wind turbine is small potatoes (Thank the sea gods nobody was hurt by flying fiberglass fragments) In the end it is YOU the individual who is responsible for everything in your own life(s). Trusting others is OK to an extent -only it is "trust but verify." It's your life, it's your boat, it's your big plans to continue cruising. Nobody is going to care about these things nearly as much as you do. But you have to be in the right head space and not impaired by lack of sleep/rest/time to do it right and proper. Never turn on new equipment on a Friday...

The amazing courage and commitment of two people having just met to decided to take up a life together and put the past behind is inspiring. You apparently crossed paths at just the right time. Obviously Michael was ready for a major life change, I hope it works out well for both of you. Life is too short to pass up adventure. Having been in business myself for nearly 40 years, I'm ready for change before long.... But I don't know if I'd have his courage. The lesson about not trusting professionals is one I learned long ago...... Employees are the problem. I've not had employees for many years now. It's impossible to make sure everything is done right when someone else is doing it. I found that eliminating employees and doing things with my own hands ended any problems.......I can't afford to do things wrong, or carelessly or make mistakes...... somebody drawing a wage seldom has that level of commitment. It's just a job. When doing an important job you have to put everything else out of your mind and focus on doing it right. Most people cannot compartmentalize and focus on the job when doing the job, on the personal life when not on the job, etc..... or simply don't care for anything but a paycheck.
@RVLifeNOW3 жыл бұрын
So true about employees, and I’m quite sure it was this when things went bad. Regarding the courage. As a man once said to me when I was switching careers from a $12,000 a year job to the potential for a $100,000 a year job...how can you afford NOT to come to this school!?! Life is short...how can anyone afford to NOT go for it...to NOT have the courage to make the change!!!

Rebecca, I think you have a good man there, Mike has a good cheerful manner and can do knowledge, and can do dishes too. Lol. You are right to double-check all work done by so-called professionals. A good tip is to run the engine for at least 20 minutes before casting off., bleed the fuel filter some to get any condensation out, before starting the engine, all ways check all through holes valves for leakage and correct position. plus any water in the bilge. Secure the anchor and all loose equipment on the deck, lines, fenders,etc fuel & water cans/jugs. You have a beautiful SMILE.

Every time you get pissed at Michael for some little thing (like a wind generator blade) please remember he climbed the mast, he checked the pins, he saved the mast and all the terror, heart break and broken dreams that may have died with that kind of a set back at sea. It's great to see you stepping up and wanting to learn more about actually sailing the boat as Patrick did. I hope you can learn over time to get semi-comfortable with single handing this boat so you can perform a man overboard retrieval in heavy seas and poor conditions as well as single handing if Michael is sick or injured and can do nothing but sit in the cabin. And Michael needs the same skill for a reversal of the scenarios. Best of luck, it will be a great adventure. I think your current skill sets will compliment each other. Stay happy, have fun...the adventure continues. Also, great camera work and editing. Your skills are already at a pretty high level with this.

A good toilet is vital, so well worth the time. Earlier boat outfitters have a lot to answer for. I am moving through-hull fittings to places where they are readily accessible by anyone, while also reducing the number of fittings. I finally settled on the through-hull fitting material and am replacing all fittings with titanium fittings (not as expensive as you might think). If you get to installing an electric toilet one thing I discovered is that if you run the electric pump in the wrong direction it maserates far better while still pumping the material albeit at a slower rate, so toilet to waste tank the material is far less likely to cause clogging. Also I feel far better about releasing material as a cloud than floating chunks. What? People don’t like talking about that? We are boaters and so are a lot closer to the reality of our life style than landlubbers. And in the galley I installed a water trap on each sink to all of: stop the back flow from one sink to another; stop the smell from the pipe filling the boat when I am away; and to trap grease which causes blockages. They have really compact easy to install traps here in Europe for less than Euro 10, which work extremely well. A huge improvement. I developed an instant hate for Lavac toilet pumps with the first attempt to replace diagrams and valves. That made it very easy to go electric, but out of laziness with the aft head i left the pump in the line, and that turned out to be the smartest thing as i now pump the line dry every time when using that head, and if there is an electric problem the hand pump still works as normal requiring only the addition of water. I’ve yet to re install the hand pump in the forward head. I still suffer at 70 from the joint damage caused by trying to reshape my body to fit where i could access the original toilet parts, so I empathize with Michael and that stressed look. Bill

The original bulder would have connected the plumbing with the counter top off....then sealed it all up making maintenance a serious challenge....I have had to apply a totally more zen approach to boat maintenance than to general household fixes.
@williambunting8033 жыл бұрын
@@mickeyironeye That Mickey is definitely how my Southerly was made. They gave zero thought to how things would be accessed. When my boat comes out I will be turning the toilet valve through 180 degrees so I can have the toilet waste valve in a position where i can extend the valve lever to outside the cabinet it is in so it can be right beside the toilet itself. Then when the lever is down to floor level the valve is off and when it is up out of the way the toilet is working. They put in a plumbing access panel behind the toilet at above seat level then sealed it up and put the basin waste valve and shower waste in the next cabin under the bed ???. I’ve removed the screws to that panel and fitted a latch and hinge, and now the water feed pump, the shower drain pump, and the two valves are there where they can all be easily accessed. It’s almost like the designers didn’t talk to each other. Very frustrating, but all part of the adventure, particularly when little changes can make a huge difference.

Hi Rebecca, wish we'd met at RCYC as I've recently joined in order to learn to sail and one day head off like you have done. I have met someone to do it with, so will watch and learn as we go. Have also met your friend Cecile in Richard's Bay. You're brave and intrepid that's for sure - enjoy your new life with Michael. xx

Bless you both so much for setting a new direction and moving forward. Certainly seems like you have a good crewman if not a phenomenal partner Rebecca. Remember that when your 50% of the crew that team work makes it easier not harder. SO between the two of you there is probably 120% capacity when you need a 100%. No one person can be good at everything, we keep striving for better than tomorrow is about all one can do. Fair Winds and gently following seas Rebecca and Michael. I pray for your safety and hope all is well.

Anytime you do electrical wiring on the boat make sure you use heat shrink on the connections to keep water out much better and longer than just tape by itself.
