Hi, I have a quick question: In your video, you state that the outer electrons are the electrons with the most energy levels, however, isn't 3d have a higher energy level than 4s since the electron wants to fill up the lower energy level first, in this case, 4s instead of 3d, which indicate that 3d has the higher energy level. So isn't the number of outer electrons being 5?

I've taught biology and Human A&P for many years and now I'm teaching chemistry for the first time. I was confused about the number of valence electrons. I thought it was just the sum of the electrons found in the highest principal energy level(s). In the case of Mn, the 2 electrons in 4s shell would be the only valence electrons. Is this correct? In your video, you say that we would add the 2 electrons in the 4s orbital and the 5 electrons in the 3d for a total of 7. Thanks for your help.

I teach high school chemistry and I agree with you--valence electrons in this example would only be the outermost electrons, which are in the 4th energy level, or shell and don't include the d electrons. Only s and p electrons are ever valence electrons, d and f electrons will always have a lower energy level number in any given electron configuration that follows the Aufbau Principle.

Depends, in the video, manganese is a transition element, so outer electron is found outer shell. Mn has 2 electrons. For valence electrons, Mn has 7 valence electrons. It is a transition element, it has 1 or more electrons. For representative elements, it has different rule.

What is the difference between an outer electron and a valence electron?
@melissamaribel
@melissamaribel 5 жыл бұрын
Outer electrons are the electrons in the highest energy level, while valence electrons are used for bonding two or more elements together. Valence electrons are also the electrons in the outermost shell of an atom.
@Helium1887
@Helium1887 5 жыл бұрын
So wouldn't the valence electrons and the outer electrons be the same thing being that the valence electrons also have the highest energy level?@@melissamaribel
@melissamaribel
@melissamaribel 5 жыл бұрын
They aren't the same number and they aren't the same overall. Valence electrons are in the outermost shell but are not found the same way as the outer electrons. You will later learn about lewis structures and how valence electrons are used for bonding so there is a major difference, you just haven't gotten to that section yet. Overall main difference is the use case of these different types of electrons. Outer electrons tell us the highest energy level of the atom and valence electrons tell us how many bonds are possible to be made with that atom.
