I love that quote in the beginning from the bass player, and the song Moon River! I’ve always enjoyed listening and playing it off of sheet music, but I never realized the logic of the chord movement! Thank you sir for your great videos and website, I’m very much looking forward to learning more techniques and listening to your arrangements :) have a good day!

The 3rd is the most exclusive note in the chord, other tones can be used in different ways in multiple chords.

This is a timely lesson for me Kent. I'm on page 82 of your book (first 5 bars of All of me stride versions). I tried continuing with chords and melody using what I've learnt from you, using theory and memory. Okay it was a very laboured and fractured effort, but the seeds are now planted. Thank you so much for using your wonderful ability to help us along. Such a cool way to learn.

This is a very late comment. This title sounded very promising, yet I get the feeling there are other lessons one should watch before this one. The title led me to think that this would focus on teaching how to find by ear what combination of individual notes to play to build chords for melodies. However this proceeds as if one is already expected to know underlying chords and just play them. What should be watched before this?
@KentHewittpiano88 Жыл бұрын
This video does not teach you how to find the right chords by ear, it presupposes that you know diatonic theory. I have a beginner jazz series that might interest you here: kzbin.info/aero/PLFuMibnl_h5Y81iBkdAM_Z6rxzbm9-pXH Also I have ear training for beginners here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZK1f6iHo9GJmK8 A good way to start to learn theory to apply chords to a simple tune is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoizdYSthNGlfac

Lovely chords Kent! I'm really liking the sound of those descending parallel 4ths going to the Em9. I remember as a kid asking our music theory teacher why parallel 4ths, 5ths and octaves is "weak" and what weak means because sometimes it sounds great.

I guess Mancini's 1st tune for the film was too difficult for Audrie Hepburn to sing so he wrote a simpler song for her "Moon River". The 1st tune was later used as the theam for the film "Two for the Road" also with Audrie Hepburn.

Don't understand the natural B in the left hand chord in measure 12? But it's called a Bb9? To me Bb9 is D, Ab, C; 3rd, 7th, 9th.
@KentHewittpiano885 жыл бұрын
That should be a Bb ...it's a typo...I can fix it on the sheet but not the video. Measure 5 it should be a Cb, I have B natural, it's the same note, just en harmonic. I will fix these tonight on the PDF. Thanks.

At 16 min you describe the B and E as a 2-5 of A, but can’t you think of the F# before it as a 6,2,5 of the A ?I realise it’s not diatonic to C but you jazz players break all the rules !
@KentHewittpiano885 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right...that is a cycle of 5ths regardless of the key of C. If you continue the next 2-5 takes us back to C.
