Good description of the effects on the ground of thermals passing, also there are the effects on the model, rising wing or tail, increase in speed, being pushed out of the thermal, being sucked down and toward the thermal ( by the inrush of air) these are all important at distance or when you are not standing next to a wind sock.

Super video! Together with the other one I saw months ago I´m refreshed to try this spring :))

Thank you so much for this. I was messing around this week with my staufenbiel hawk 3. Not a thermal bird at all! But i actually hooked some thermals with it and climbed! I was laughing like an idiot at it. I need an art hobby oddessy...

The bugs were having as much fun as you were playing in the wind.

Yes :) but not even one landed on me all day :)

the sock points to the direction of the thermal but not the distance

That is when it is getting hard :) But if you fly the glider in a angle of 45 degree up from the wing sock in the direction with the wind shift when the windspeed increase, then you have a good starting point.

So windsock points towards the thermal, but how do you judge the distance to the thermal?

Have you found that there is a turn direction, clockwise or counter-clockwise, that makes a difference when in a thermal? I’ve seen large dust devils with clear rotation in them but don’t know if these translate to what you’d see if a thermal was visible.

they are the same thing as dust devils.. Thermals will also grow into larger ones made up of little ones as they cross the land and go higher and higher .

James Hurd thx. Kinda what I figured but it seems sometimes that the hot air is not so much swirling upwards as it is billowing/bubbling up like steam or smoke appears when rising up from a heat source.

Earlier in the day I burned some garbage in the 2 barrels on the video, and the smoke was really nice to show the thermals :), but there were no signs of rotation, not as I could see.

Thank you for the video! I suspect you are complying with a 100m ceiling when you drop the flaps? I imagine you could really 'speck out' with that big lift! :)

You say fly down wind so if you move a mile down are you still flying down wind?
@SpeedsterDEN Жыл бұрын
It is down wind compared to your self, If you fly up wind compared to your self then the glider fly in the future, and flying downwind then the glider fly in the past 😜
