My record at an airport, was City Airport in London. Late flight, raining heavily. From the plane stopping, handbrake on, start the stop watch. Doors open, get off, walk to immigration - passport check - collect a bag from the carousel, walk through customs, entrance all get in a cab. Cab starts, stop the watch. 1 minute 40 seconds. Even my jaw dropped. The reason it was the last flight, i was the only one with a checked in bag and they wanted to get home. Same for the rest. For leaving, my record is 1 hour early. Reason, we were the only two passengers. So we took off. Spent the flight in the cockpit including the landing. All with 4 machetes as hand luggage.

I don't understand what that tout is saying about a Rs. 200 parking fee. I only paid the price the app showed me. No additional parking fee. Even with this "additional parking fee" ride-sharing apps are still safer and cheaper.
@Patelivision Жыл бұрын
Why/How is uber both cheaper and safer?

It's probably an scare tactic. Some people might feel compelled to go with the tout if he tries to lie to them about an magical “extra fee“.
@sgurjeet99 Жыл бұрын
Yea so they say that Uber app will add a parking charge later when ride is finished, and will be effectively costlier than their cab, which in your case wasn't as he quoted almost double LOL. And they do this to everyone(even Indians) who look confused as to where to go.

But Karl. Wouldn't you agree that uber is a huge company? Like its deciding to go to Walmart instead of a mom and pop because the corporation is cheaper and you feel "safer" going to a walmart. You know what I mean?
@manis1852 Жыл бұрын
Karl, love your videos. As an Indian American traveling in India this week, I saw another challenge, all because Indians try to outsmart themselves. So at Bangalore airport, when u book a ride, you don’t get the name of driver, car description, plate number etc. instead u get a PIN, that they ask you to deliver at the Uber pick up point. You then are allocated a car. Now imagine there are no signs showing where the Uber pick up zone is. As a jet lagged traveler, your first instinct is to cancel the ride, as I did. Later , my friends told me this is being done because people would book a Uber before picking up their bags, and in many cases keep the Uber driver waiting for 30, 45 minutes… hence the PIN to make sure you are at the pick up zone, before a car is allotted to you .. typical Indian jugaad and counter jugaad by Uber !

Wifi really only works if you have a local Indian phone number- they ask for it when you register for wifi. Otherwise you have to find the booth to get a coupon for those without a local number- and the booth isn’t that easy to find. Using an e-sim is probably the easiest way for connectivity. Airalo works just fine- it uses Jio. Just make sure you activate it before you get to India

My first trip to India in 2008... 11pm arrival got a pre paid taxi to Paraganj. After half hour the driver pulled into a place with 'Tourist office' lot up in lights. Said problem with hotel blah blah blah. Even faked a phone call to my hotel saying road was closed for a festival and I had to go elsewhere. I was a 20 something female in the middle of the night with 2 men on my first ever time there, so yeah I didn't feel great. Uber was excellent during my travels in India. As a solo traveller, it was good to have the security. Beware of the scam where they ring you & as soon as they hear your accent tell you cash only & double the price. Say no and hang up. To stop this, as soon as the car was allocated, I sent a message saying "payment online". Having said that, I made a point of always paying an extra tip; Uber take a big slice for themselves & its the drivers who miss out.

There is a queue formed according to the car type (hatchback or sedan) , and as per the queue ,once you get ur turn u can take the first available car , That is the best method for airport instead of calling the drivers and navigating with them. In my city of Guwahati, Rapido (Bike Taxi) and even uber sometimes insists on traveling offline at the same app displayed price by cancelling the ride. These apps are cheaper because they exploit their drivers a lot. For every 100Rs a customer pays for his ride, these apps charge more than 30Rs as commission and after adding the fuel and maintenance costs, the driver hardly manages to earn 30-40Rs. I agree that these apps provide a platform but I do believe that these people demanding insane prices outside tourist places would be a lot lower if this whole system was a bit more favourable to the driver as well as the customer.

You might also want to talk about the drivers scams. Not sure if they do it up north, but in the south we seen 2 driver scams. The first is very often used by Ola drivers, they want you to cancel the route in the app, so they can claim like 2-4 times the money. The other one was a bit more sketchy, the driver pulls into a gas station and fills up the car, then tell you that you ought to pay the fuel because he does not have money on him. This one is less often seen but they scammed one of my colleges there and tried to scam me but was overly suspicious so the scam did not work.

What are the dangers of prepaid taxis vs Uber? It seems a bit difficult and chaotic to get to that Uber spot. Prepaid taxis seem to be easier to locate. Even if they are a bit more expensive, I would say it is OK but what are their CONs?
@KarlRock Жыл бұрын
Uber tracks your entire ride and will refund you if the drivers takes you the long route to increase the fare. They have a safety button linked to a call centre to help you if something bad happens. Can pay by credit card. Car quality is better - AC usually works. Uber drivers have to use Maps. They don't try to upsell you to their friend's tourist shop. They don't bother running all the usual taxi-driver tricks on tourists basically. The list goes on and on.

I had no trouble getting Rupees from a currency exchange in England before flying to Delhi last August. Also note that ATMs are everywhere and I was able to draw out local currency at any time using my credit and debit cards. A word of warning about large denomination notes though: All the ATMs I used dispensed R500 notes only and I found them a bit difficult to use for small purchases. Often the rickshaw drivers and street food sellers would swear on their dying grandmothers that they had no change for a R500 note so I sometimes had no choice but to pay over the odds for rides and snacks. You learn to hoard your small denomination notes for all small purchases.
