My main problem with vegan fashion is that they rarely offer plus sizes. I have lost quite a bit of weight by going vegan, but I am at a plateau right now and my shirt size is XL. Not even the shirt you designed goes over a large. Hopefully, by the time I get to wearing a large shirt it won't be sold out.

Totally agree. I used to be an xl years ago when I went vegan, and only fast fashion seemed to accommodate. I hate the assumption that all vegans are healthy and thin. Hopefully vegan fashion catches on soon!

Vegan/ environment friendly is as well wearing second hand clothing. You must have heard about no waste movement? Of course there are things I wouldn’t wear after someone else (like lingerie and etc) but you can start with that. Advantage of that is most of these clothes are plus size.

Samantha Fox I am considered a healthy weight and I normally buy a small / medium in most stores but for the life of me I can’t find vegan/ sustainable/ non sweat shop bras that fit me. Why do you have to have small boobs to care about animal and human suffering?

I would love to be XL, I am a fat vegan with big flat feet, TOMs don't fit me at all, and most vegan clothing and shoe makers just don't get big enough for me. Very frustrating.

Caitlin, I really do appreciate that you cover low-cost vegan options along with offering the more expensive options. It's great to support specifically vegan clothing and faux leather good companies, but that's not always doable on a tighter budget. I also loved how you highlighted the ethical issues and sustainability issues with fast fashion and sweatshops. Thrifting is quickly becoming my go-to for clothing, and I'm lucky to live in an area with plenty of Goodwills. I agree with your thoughts on purchasing clothing made with animal materials, such as wool sweaters or scarves, second-hand or at thrift stores, as that lines up with sustainability and doesn't create the market for new wool (or etc.) goods. I can't do leather goods, fur, or down personally, but I've bought a few wool/cashmere items secondhand. One of my favorite vegan clothing finds has been Ahimsa shoes. They're out of Brazil and have a high focus on sustainability, and while they're on the pricier side they're shoes are well worth the money. I've had their Cognac work boots for a couple years now and they've lasted beautifully. I'd also recommend the online stores Mooshoes.com and avesu.eu for shoes and other accessories!

This is a really good video! I’ve seen a lot of comments suggesting not to buy leather/ wool at second hand/thrift stores because you are promoting that material. But as a vegan and fashion design student that’s a tricky subject because it is much more environmentally friendly to buy a wool sweater at a thrift store than buying a new acrylic (plastic) based sweater:)

Hi Caitlin! Thank you for your video it was really informative. I've been vegan for a little over a year now and the only problem I have with vegan clothing is that a lot of it unfortunately isn't very environmentally friendly. One of the main reasons I became a vegan was because of the environmental impact of the meat and dairy industry, so I want to invest in clothes that are more "kind" to the planet. Obviously the ethical part of the clothing industry is also very important, however, how as a vegan (besides buying secondhand) do you buy clothes that are plastic free? (obviously cotton and linnen are available) I find this a very hard thing to tackle, especially shoe and bag wise. Again thank you for your video and I do apologize for a very long comment.
@palynaike
@palynaike 5 жыл бұрын
I think the same as you too. I personally try not to buy anything synthetic anymore, but I use what I already have until is no longer useful. I care really deeply about the environment and the effects of plastic, so I don’t see how to avoid using either animals or terrible plastic when it comes to certain items of clothing (at least for now). Again, I guess it depends on how important is one topic to the other for each individual.

I personally feel like the most important thing is to buy things from companies that treat their workers fairly. That's much more important than buying vegan clothing to me because I care much more about the suffering of humans than the suffering of animals. It would feel weird to me to try so hard to end animal suffering but then do nothing to end the suffering of people. The best thing to do in most cases is to just buy second hand because it's better for the environment, animals, people, and your wallet.

I loved this video! Thanks for sharing! It's great to have more knowledge of vegan brands and faux rather lines; I had only heard of free people and tentree and love their items. Typically, I shop second hand. I will typically never buy a prominent leather item, but I have some secondhand leather shoes and belts. When shopping second hand, I actually prefer natural materials such as cotton and linens (which are vegan) and cashmere, wool, and silk (which aren't vegan) because once they wear out and I use the fabric as much as possible, what remains can be composted and not go to the landfill. I definitely agree that it is a personal opinion and choice, so thanks for sharing yours!

Hemp Hoodlamb is one of the only vegan outerwear brands I’ve come across and they seem great but they’re super expensive. I’m sure it’s worth the investment if they’re ethically made, vegan and will last a long time, but not something a lot of people can outright afford. As a vegan in PA, I’ve struggled the most with finding affordable vegan winter jackets and vegan snow boots! If anyone has recommendations for boots that can be worn through the snow that would be amazing!

This is a really insightful video, especially for people starting to transition. A few other things to look out for are (some) trousers as they have wool in them. They'll say not machine washable usually though so that's easy to spot. Ann then shoes. Shoes use glue which wouldn't be classed as vegan, but they don't have to list that as a material, at least where I live. But if you're going for the majority of vegan products, it might be worthwhile just looking for a vegan tag or email the company to find out :)

hey i wonder about wool - i don't buy it nor wear it (allergic as hell), but i have this lady here in my village who owns a couple of sheep and where i live you have to shear the sheep during summer because otherwise they'll die due to overheat and she keeps the wool and knits herself sweaters with it. she takes VERY good care of the sheep and does not use them for consumption but just as like pets? personally, i don't really have a problem with it if it's like that, but how do you think about this? Another one that I never thought of (because I'm not a man, lol) is mens suits and ties. We just needed to buy an outfit for my husband for a wedding we're going to and it was HARD to find a completely non-wool suit. Thankfully we lucked upon a few brands that had polyester blends options and also a small selection of cotton ties. It actually made me pretty sad to realize that the vast majority of the suits that men wear are wool.

Caitlin, I would say that we shouldn't buy 2nd hand nonvegan clothes. The fact that the owner is getting paid can encourage them to buy more items, thinking that they can easily sell them in the future: so there's a higher demand of these clothes This is the way I see it, I hope I have explained my point right, pls consider this!

hey! i'm obviously not her, but i think it's okay bc the damage it's already done, you know? the demand has been caused and the company has made money over animal suffering. so when you become vegan you can either continue using it, pass it to friends or family, or donate it to charity. i wouldn't sell it, cause in my opinion it would, somehow, perpetuate the idea that we can profit from animal exploitation. so what do you think?

I don’t have plastic in my house. Leather last and it does decompose. I only buy at second hand stores not to support the leather industry but if I find a leather coat, I will get it. It’s warmer and it has no plastic. Please don’t hate me for this.

My only problem with faux-leather is the quality, specifically when it comes to shoes. It's often rainy and snowy here where I live (Montenegro), and I can't find ANY good-quality, warm and water-proof vegan boots. I wear real leather boots that I got s a present for now, but I realize that eventually I will have to get rid of them and get new ones. And here we really lack good options, and most of online shops I visited don't ship to Montenegro. Any suggestions?

Anais Nappert Drouin Hey there! I love buying my shoes, bags, etc., from avesu (they offer a wide range from different brands; everything's vegan of course and a good amount of it is also fair produced). Check it out: www.avesuveganshoes.com

I'm sure that sheep can be raised inhumanely, but sheep have to be sheared to survive. It's one of those trade offs. Do you err on the side of raising and shearing sheep, or do you use a fabric made from petroleum products? or trees? If you're against using plastic, are you also against nylon? It's a pretty deep subject. I know that the sheep is a living being, so that might be the distinction, but if I'm not raising them inhumanely, and I'm not eating them, is it worse than making a plastic like fabric? Just asking.

The way they source angora rabbit fur is revolting aswell, they put sticky syrup on their hands and literally rip the fur out of the rabbit whilst it’s alive and fully awake. It can rip out their skin and cause serious damage to them and there’s no way it’s not painful for them. Truly evil and it’s all from poor countries so they have no funds or means of changing the way they farm

No, they're not of course, but some vegans are okay with buying them because it's not supporting the animal industry which means it's not doing/supporting harm to the animals

@@CyberMachine (just my opinion but) your own safety/health goes always first! You have to be healthy yourself before you can worry about others. So if the alternative is that you're going to be sick and freezing, then you should get yourself some warm clothe I think :)

Ashley D. It’s not funding the industry. Also, it’s giving to charity and ENCOURAGING the donation and re sale of products and clothing . It reduces textiles waste and means that those animals didn’t die from vain or for only one use

I dont think most people understand how the third world garments industry works. If they dont sell enough the workers dont get paid. The company heads wont put themselves through the loss they'd sack the workers or not pay them for months on. It's a horrible cycle

People think that Tom's is so wonderful with their business model of buying shoes and then someone gets a free shoe in a different country that needs them. The only thing people don't really think about is the local shoe makers then lose business thus hurting the locals. Not as generous as you think?

I obviously agree about the leather industry but I don't think that the wool industry is actually cruel... it's an industry that allows animals to live. (I actually think that also for meat, as I am not a vegan, I just eat good meat once in a while, knowing where it came from and how it was produced.) But I do remember that it's also good for some of those animals to be shaved regularly! More researching needs to be done but maybe we don't need to cut all animal products from our life ? I have the same issues with bees: they're going extinct because of men but at the same time the only reason they still exist is because we harvest their honey... without some support from some industry, a lot of species will deperish. Sorry for the long post but it's really my only issue with your lifestyle that keeps me from joining the vegan community :) (and also I love meat)

Thrift stores are an earth friendly and ethical option. Just gotta watch out for wool, leather, etc. AND be absolutely sure that the store isn't laundering money. Red, White, and blue thrift stores are suspected of money laundering.
