While my house was built in 1911, making most of the content in this video irrelevant, I REALLY thoroughly enjoyed your video. I learned a lot about house construction in general and how it can change from house to house, builder to builder. I also learned about some of the possible exceptions to the general rules which is REALLY helpful. That explains why I failed to find studs in the past. Also, the magnet strategy is amazing. To someone who's never thought of that, it seems so brilliant.

Nothing like listening to a person with experience... I started to use the knock method... to see where the studs are......when my stud finders were not working over freshly painted walls also.....this gent basically said it all in that not at construction for studs are not 16 inch perfect........great video....

I found the stud! This the 3rd video I watched and finally found them. Using the end of my hammer helped better than knocking... because I could focus more on sound and less on touch (knocking with your hand is tough; especially when you can't find the stud).

Awesome, helpful video! When tek fails, the "old fashioned way" helps me feel better about finding studs. My carpenter uses the magnet as a stud finder, insisting it is more accurate. Now, I get it. Wires are my greatest concern, but I am now more confident about being able to avoid them when hanging shelves, etc. Carry on.

Very helpful, but I live in a mobile home - which I'm guessing is plastered walls? I did the knocking strategy and I believe I could tell where the studs were that I needed, but plastered walls must not have the nails in them for the magnet to work. I know you said right in the video that plastered walls are a whole nother story.

I really appreciate all the info in the video. I was aware that the super cheap studfinders just use a magnet but I hadn't thought to just grab one of my strong magnets (from tearing a hard drive apart) and use it directly. I was having a rough time trying to find the studs on a spackled ceiling using my ancient Zircon but between the magnet, knocking and then verification with a tape measure, it was dead simple. Thanks!

Great video. You are a ole timer craftsman. The guy that put up some of the walls in my house. Put some of the studs at various measurements. I have to tear out two walls in my kitchen. Redo the wiring . Rehang studs and drywall. Install the cabinets. Then there is the drywall ceiling that needs to be tore out and rehung with drywall,primed and textured and painted. I have a stairway on the side of my kitchen. It has a partial wall. I need to put up a wall there. Hang drywall, prime, texture, paint and hang cabinets. I need this to block off cold air from the basement. No door until I get the wall up. Then I can put in the floor. This project will be the final project on the first floor. There a few things I want to do to the basement. Rewire some outlets and add outlets, and lights. The vinyl tile needs to be ripped out and reinstalled.This will end all the remodeling in my house. Its taken 17 years and lots of drywall, paint, flooring, bruised fingers, injured foot and a bump on my head. I own it lock stock and barrel. Then there is the outside and the garage. I came up with a video idea for electrical. I will be planning and directing the video soon. Your tips will make the job easier. When Spring breaks and I can haul drywall. The job begins. Take care and god bless you and your family.

Quick question about finding the direction of a ceiling joist. Can you tell immediately by how a ceiling vent is installed to which way the joists are running? Basically we know most standard ceiling vents are held in by two screws on the outer edge...so would it be safe to assume wherever those screws are is the way the joists are running?
@Cookingwithdrchill6 жыл бұрын
sometimes, but sometime the vent is between two joists surrounded by 2x4's.
@daddylogan6 жыл бұрын
What do you suggest then beside me cutting a hole in the drywall? I watched your video and I see no easy way to tell by looking at my ceiling. I see no tape lines or any indicators. I do have very large beams in my home that run one direction (the direction I am hoping my bedroom joists run) but the rafter tails outside my home run the opposite. Anyhow...the reason I watched your video was because it said I could find the joists without a stud finder...so any more clues besides cutting or climbing up through a tiny horrible hole and crawling through venting to find out? LOL

"This video's more about new homes" he says. Good instructional video, but every video I see or article I read is about sheetrock. Most pre-1960s houses have plaster walls over wooden or metal lath, or lathboard. It's not so easy to find studs through plaster and its substructure, and stud finders don't work very well. I end up drilling small exploratory holes where I think a stud should be, then patching them. Primitive, but it works.

HOW TO BE AWESOME SAUCE ok thanks. Also i got wood paneling and i am trying to hang up curtains on my sliding glass door. Im having trouble drilling into it to hang them up. Is the studs typically next to these doors as well.
@Cookingwithdrchill6 жыл бұрын
above a door or a window there is what is called a header. it can be anywhere from an inch or so away from the top of the window to a few inches depending. there are studs usually 2 to 3 on each side that hold the header in place. there will be studs and headers there but they may be a few inches away from the door or window.

I love your video. However, HD had a sale on a stud finder and I couldn't resist picking it up for $20 plus a level. My sense of hearing isn't any good, nor my sight, or my intelligence. Math and thinking is too hard for me these days. ;). I also have a super old historic home and back in the day over 120 years ago they didn't follow any building codes or standards. Also my wall studs go at angles!!! I will think about your great advice. My stethoscope might help. #TheCreativeWorkshopHD

So basically, as you can't differentiate between timber, ac wires and water pipes, you need to buy a multi detector anyway! Still I did like the general common sense approach expressed in this video, especially the use of magnets. Thanks.
@Cookingwithdrchill7 жыл бұрын
no you can differentiate between timber, electric, and plumbing. you don't need a detector. you need to be cautious when drilling and nailing. also, electric and plumbing can somewhat be predicted where their locations are.
@raving8887 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for getting back. I understand how you can predict where electric and plumbing are probably located, but say for instance you're not sure if an electric cable lies where you want to drill, surely you don't 'cautiously'' drill or nail in that area.
@Cookingwithdrchill7 жыл бұрын
sure you do, but keep in mind that electric is not supposed to be installed next to the drywall and is supposed to have nail plates to prevent accidental drilling or nailing. I don't know of any detector that would accurately find wires or plumbing unless it was right up against the drywall.
@raving8887 жыл бұрын
Thanks again, I can visualise how things are located relative to one another now, and understand how to be cautious, e.g..just drill far enough to penetrate the drywall and not to let the drill bit go unnecessarily further risking hitting other services..
@CALISUPERSPORT7 жыл бұрын
Do floor joists also have nail plates? There's alot of these videos about using the tripod tool to fix squeaky subfloors, but people comment that you could end up drilling through plumbing or electrical.
