The filter is a big deal for me. If I have to pretend around someone then they are not ever going to be a comforting person to speak to.

Always be yourself. Saves a lot of stress and time. It's the best way to filter out people. Someone stops hanging out with you because you're yourself? Good. No need to keep the mask on and pretend to be someone you're not, just to keep their company.

Absolutely spot on. I find that my most valuable relationships have both genuine transparency and the ability to just exist in the same space without needing to talk.

That’s good, another measure I use is can I tell this person good news and are they genuinely happy for me.

Also ask yourself, would they defend you or perish for you? This is a true friend. Would you want to be standing next to them in the very worst of circumstances? Good questions to ponder.

I think a great question is "who would you be willing to call them out on being stupid?" That reality check is so important.

Not filtering doesn't mean you can be rude and offensive to your friends. It simply means being yourself and expressing your thoughts knowing you're safe and won't be judged.

But where do you find new people like this later in life? That kind of connection is built up over time too, it’s not safe nor smart to be on such terms with someone that you haven’t known long enough

The older I get, the more people like me; but the older I get, the less I care what people think of me... some people say there's a correlation; honestly, I'm not sure. All I know is that it is far easier to live in indifference to the opinions of others, but also seemingly harder to grow. Everything in moderation...

I don't change anything around anyone. Apparently, I can't change my openness around, even new people, and my wife has the annoying habit of kicking me in the shins. I'm not sure if it's a form of applause or just a nervous tick she has when I'm talking to her bosses, coworkers, family members, waitresses, etc.

this guy just scours the internet for interesting pieces of research like this and regurgitates it. I find his style very derivative. Unlike say Joe Rogan, who is genuinely a curious cat and will talk about interesting stuff he would consume even if he wasn't doing the podcast.
