To anyone who needs to hear this: it's not really possible to be able to recognise what your core values are if you spent years in survival mode. Give yourself credit for what you have done already and DO NOT FEEL GUILTY about others' progress 🌿✨
@stellwyn3 жыл бұрын
I needed this, thank you. Since the pandemic I've felt so out of tune with myself and my values, because I've just been surviving. I know I'm not living the way I want to be right now, but it's what I had to do to get through! But this exercise is a nice chance to try and reconnect with my pre-pandemic self.

So true, i spent my whole life in survivor mode and the pandemic woke me up and I realised i wasnt doing anything I love I just did what was expected of me. Now that I realised that i try to make time for my passion.

The best part about getting older is how the strong need to search for your own identity subsides, and then you discover so much more outside yourself.
@annettepass80903 жыл бұрын
That’s very true. It’s a process we all go through and very natural and important for young adults finding their own way in the world - something I definitely struggled with in my 20s. Once you become at peace with who you are, losing the need to constantly define yourself, you are able to be so much more open to the world.

This video came out a year ago but this is what I came up with for my core values: 1. Mental & physical health 2. Growth & awareness (I feel like these go hand-in-hand) 3. Openness 4. Connection & compassion Also: Would I ever sacrifice these, or have I when I was really stressed? The short answer is yes, I have. For example during burnout I definitely sacrificed my physical health and growth, but I also believe that practicing things that were aligned with these values brought me back to myself and made me feel alive again. Because of this, I still believe that these are my core values. I think living every day of our lives according to our values is a huge pressure, because sometimes it's very hard to stick to. You could say that if it's so hard to stick to, then they're not your core values, but I still feel like they could be. We're not perfect, and sometimes the values that resonate with us most are the things we need to work on a lot, but feel so so rewarding to us when we do practice them.

My core values are: 1. Insight 2. Self-security and confidence that allows me to be sincere with myself and others 3. Communication, connection and compassion 4. Growth 5. Presence and dedication I found it interesting that they passed all the test questions but one, the "Have I sacrificed these in times of stress?" question. I find that under a lot of stress I tend to sacrifice them, especially the 5th - presence and dedication, which to me is necessary to feel happiness and see meaning in anything, and then gradually with more stress I sacrifice other ones, too. I wanted to share this observation because I feel like this is an interesting starting point for getting better at dealing with stress - remembering your core values!

Hi Jade! I felt that I needed to leave a comment because this video was sooooo important and relevant to me. First, I love the fact that just because some values are in a higher position than others, it doesn't mean that these other values are not part of us or of our path in life. This idea made me feel comfortable to write down what I believe to be my core values, with less pressure. Second, after realizing my core values, I feel that I'm able to make better decisions in so many different aspects of my life, I feel very open to understand a little better what truly fulfills me and how to get it. So, thank you. It was really fun and also challenging doing this exercise. Lots of love, Malu

I feel like very specific events and negative episodes have shaped me a lot and it was kind of hard to derive from that what feeling I craved in the context. Then I tried rewriting the most important experiences into positives only and then it kinda worked out. Also ditched the question about whether I would keep my values for 20, 50 years. My life is too in flux right now. I'm glad I was able to figure out what are my values at the moment. I tend to forget that change is possible so I won't push myself into thinking about my values as something so fixed (even if they maybe are). Anywhom. The outcome of 1,5h hours of reflection and video re-watching: Harmony, Meaning/Purpose, Security, Skillfulness

2:31 I just wanna point out that just because your current behaviour isn't in alignment with what you feel in your gut is your core value, then its okay! It's not that the value you're not living up to is not your core value, it's just that you're living in what psychologists call dissonance...so, be patient with yourself, find out what's making you fall into that negative habit loop even tho it makes you feel like crap (because it goes against your core values) and work on fixing it ❤ I guess you could say, if you feel 100% content with the way you are, it's your core value, and if you feel shitty, or maybe like you're doing something wrong, or you hate yourself for doing something, then its not your core value, it's just that you're ignoring what your real core value is, and hence why you feel so uneasy and uncomfortable with yourself. (So if someone is just super focused on their career and have no qualms about it, success is their core value. But if you're really focused on your career and saving up money so you can buy a house maybe, and you feel bad for not spending enough time with your family or not being more altruistic, then its coz success is not a core value for you, you are just giving it priority in that particular phase of your life)

What happens when one of your core values is impacting your life negatively? Watching this video I realised that my top core value is comfort. I'm only in my twenties but I'm already actively envisioning and preparing for the time when I can retire from work, which I'm dearly wishing to be soon. I love to lie in bed all day long and just chill and watch the scenery and listen to music and not have to bother about doing anything or interacting with anyone. Putting this into perspective, it doesn't do my life much good to always put comfort on top. I don't care about losing touch with people coz I prefer stressless quiet and solitude. I don't achieve my goals coz I would rather spend time relaxing than striving. I don't get things done, I don't create meaning. I merely want to just exist. My core value is at odds with the very machinery of the world and living.
