The younger gunsmiths in my area consider replacing the furniture on an AR-15 to be refinishing a rifle… Nowadays, true master craftsmen like Randy are so few and far between. My gunsmith of 40 years has announced his pending retirement and I’ll miss him. Randy, this was a great tutorial for stock finishing; my greatest takeaway is that you gotta have patience and be very thorough. Your videos are always informative and entertaining! Thank you, and your wife, for sharing your thoughts and expertise with your audience! Take care and be well!

I only trust old gunsmiths to do things right, like a well-known 80-year-old in Montana as recommended by Lilja barrels. I watch all these videos. Priceless!

Thank you for sharing. Just stripped the stock on a hundred year old Mauser sporter in 8MM to refinish, so this is both very helpful and very timely for the project. Let the rubbing begin !

Thanks for the video, Randy. May I ask, do you use the natural clear color Watco or ones with stain such as light, medium, dark, walnut? This is regarding American/black walnut stocks. Thanks.

Natural only. I suppose others may have different choices based on their preferences, but I prefer the natural to retain the natural coloring. Thanks for watching.

Randy, excellent video sir. This might be an odd question. Do you checker the stock before finishing ? I've monkeyed around and tried both ways. Seems like most stocks are checkered after finishing. Natural that makes the checkering stand out better, but I've always thought it leaves the wood "open" and susceptible to absorbing moisture. I'm probably over thinking it. I usually do. Thanks and all the best to you and Kathy. Cheers, Jeff

Good cogent explanation Randy. I do everything the same as you especially the wet sanding WITH the finish .(Dry sanding only removes that which you just carefully applied .The idea is to build up a finish not tear down as my old gunsmith explained to me years ago). Mostly I worked in hard maple with an aniline commercial stain .My go to finish has been Arm-R-Seal a very tough poly finish intended for floors .My intent is always to waterproof the wood . Not a traditional finish for percussion or flint rifles but since they clean up with water ,extremely practical. To soften the look of top most layer I'll mix a little BLO in with the Arm-R -Seal using that as my drier after I steel wool it. Some of the old driers just aren't available anymore . Linseed oil alone, boiled or not , never really dries and isn't waterproof . Military rifles were so finished as it was cheap , available and easily reapplied by soldiers.

I’m assuming (lol) that you sand between each coat of oil?? With 320 or 0000 steel wool????
