Excellent. Just ordered a G9 so when it arrives I will apply the update and purchase the V-LOG upgrade. Been waiting for a year for the G9 to come down in price. Panasonic makes great cameras, but always too expensive for me until they drop the prices. Will look for your instructions on how to use the V-LOG.

@@HviteVinger An undocumented change in the G9 firmware was a bump in 1080p bitrate from 28mbps to 100mbps. There are now also FHD 4:2:2 10bit codecs (also not mentioned). Still not up to the capabilities of the GH5 but a much more well rounded camera all the same.

I don't, and here's why… I change my settings ALL THE TIME. I found that I'm constantly adjusting my C memory settings, how I configure the camera, etc. for nearly every shoot. Having one "base line" just doesn't work for me anymore, sorry! So I think what I provided way-back-when is a good starting point.

Hey there, sorry for the delay. I got this same question twice in a couple of days and wanted to be sure I had a good answer. It is designed for scenes where you have a bright spot, such as a play on a theater stage. The metering mode looks at the brightest parts of the scene, and builds the exposure for that. If you used center weighted it'd calculate the shadows in too much, and multi-zone metering would likely as well. This basically tells the camera that the brightest part of the scene is what it should expose for.

Does the G9 only allow the V-log profile in the movie mode or can I use it in Manual mode as well?

In photo mode yes it’ll work but like any profile it only applies to jpeg. But if you were shooting stills on a set and wanted them to match the V-Log footage, that’d work. Some apps will even let you apply a LUT to a photo.

Sounds like you’re trying to expand the .bin file. What you’re downloading is a .zip that contains a .bin. If you see a .bin then it’s already expanded.

Did you enable it? It has its own setting in Peaking options. It doesn’t work quite the way I was hoping unfortunately. It only works while the camera is focusing in AF-S mode.

The GH5S came with V-Log installed, but even on GH5 if you have V-Log, the update won’t remove it.

Is the G9 compatible with Elgato Camlink 4k for streaming? It has clean hdmi output but in the official Elgato compatible cameras it only lists the GH5 and not the G9, which seems weird. Could the 30 minute record limit be the reason?

That is odd. I haven’t use the ElGato but it’s hard to imagine any reason that it wouldn’t work. The 30 minute limit only applies to internal recording; any of these cameras can be connected to HDMI and left on indefinitely. I vote it’d work fine. As always… but from somewhere you can easily return it!

Hello, Joseph. At first, I'd like to thank you for your great videos and reviews. At second, I consider you as an expert, so I have one question. I have Lumix G85, American model, obviously. I live in Serbia, and I shoot in 50Hz region. In my camera, there are only 24. 30 and 60fps settings, and as I know, no shutter angle setting, which give me serious flickering issue under artificial light. Is there some solution for that? Can I apply Australian or Hong Kong firmware on my camera? Will I get the variety of settings of that region's camera, or will I ruin the camera? Greetings.

Hey there, thanks for the complements! Sadly no, you can’t. If there’s a “jailbreak” option I’m not familiar with it and of course wouldn’t recommend it. That said though to avoid the flicker just shoot at 1/50 (or 1/48) instead of 1/60. That should solve it. I was waiting for this G9 firmware update so much because of the 10-bit video feature, but it turns out that 10bit is only available in MOV codec, and the free version of Resolve 16 doesn´t support it. Dang! Spending 300€ for the Studio version of Resolve because of one feature is not very tempting...

Just start the process from the beginning. The most common mistake is people tend to put the file in the wrong place on the SD card.

What do you mean “no auto focus mode”. It’s greyed out? That probably means you have VFR enabled.

Do you think, that at some point, Panasonic will make anamorphic recording accessible for the S1 as well? It's such a bummer for filmmakers who recently bought the S1, when Panasonic released the S1H shortly after it. No, I don’t. But I also don’t understand the sentiment. You bought an S1 which did not have anamorphic support. If you needed anamorphic, then the S1 wasn’t the camera for you. Now that there’s another camera (the S1H) with anamorphic support, you want that feature, but it’s for that camera. You need to buy the camera that has the feature, sorry. I understand you’re bummed, but the camera you bought didn’t lose any features. You must have felt it suited your needs when you bought it; if your needs changed, then the camera must change to go with it.

If you see v-Log as a color profile then you have it

Noise (not grain) is a product of high ISO, so if you want cleaner footage, you need more light. V-Log isn’t going to help there. More light = lower ISO. You can also add de-noising in post.

Then it sounds like you’re shooting underexposed and lifting up the shadows. Shoot slightly overexposed then darken in post, and that should hide the noise. You’ll have more flexibility in grading with V-Log and the extra dynamic range is always helpful - but it’s not going to magically fix your noise. You need to shoot differently than you are

@@photojoseph sadly I am run in gun in a rain state, light is a blessing when I get off work, and carrying lights isnt practical for moving subjects, let alone distant ones Im not sure I realize that Im doing that or the approach to combat as there are shadow and high light curve settings IA mode doesnt seem to lag when I stare at black, my manual modes lag bad when starring at black auto iso is on and capped at 1600 in cine d and 3200 in hlg You say life the exposure when aviable which id assume means when exp isnt, low the shutter/ closer to the frame rate

I don't know offhand, but Panasonic has fine customer service - have you tried calling them? If they give you grief about being in service mode… well, that mode isn't designed for users so expect a little grief about going there ;-)

@photojoseph hey Joseph, long time no talk. I'm finally back on the Panasonic horse and using my GH5. Well I went to go update it just now with v2.6 and right in the middle of updating the camera just shut off. I thought it was part of the update, but after a few minutes I turned the camera off then on only to realize to my horror that the entire menu is now gibberish of letters and symbols and I can't use the camera. It keeps shutting itself off. Is there ANY way to do a reset on the camera without the menu? like a 'insert this firmware, power on the camera and it will auto install over the corrupt firmware'?? Literally couldn’t find a number to speak with a real life person anywhere

My G9 does not have the STD menu for selecting VLOG ???? The VLOG update is installed. How the hell do you select VLOG anywhere ... it is doing my head in. I can't instructions how to do it anywhere.

You updated AND installed SFU1 for V-Log? Make sure you’re in movie mode. It’s only available there.

@@photojoseph ... all good mate. I did a factory reset and it seems to have sorted it out. All the options are there now ... So f**ked if I know.
