that's the best G9 FW 2.4 1st evaluation / test I've come across. thank you for being so quick to allow us to know about such great improvements. I've also upgraded my G9 to FW 2.4 as soon as it was available. I quickly recorded my training on 4K 60p 8-bit 4:2:0, AF-C, with 7-14 Olympus PRO lenses set to 7mm and f4. there were nearer objects / obstacles in the way / between the lens and the human. the light conditions were relatively poor. and I have to say my 1st impressions were WOW it finally works. I used to record my videos on MF, because G9 would be hunting / pulsing the background and the "obstacles" in the way (on FW 2.3). now in the exactly the same setup and type of the video, G9 on FW 2.4 works flawlessly, so that I will actually consider recording all my videos using AF-C / 1-Area + Human / Animal ON, Face / Eye ON. that will allow me concentrating on the training or the video topic itself, and "forget" about keeping the subject in focus.

@Jeroen Jacobs The Teleconverters are designed for Lenses....Olympus has EC-14 and EC-20 for some of their Lenses ...In dDecember 2020 or so,they introduced the 100-400mm Zoom Lens for MFT cameras and it works for both the Olympus and panasonic cameras...This 100-400mm Lens is cheaper than Lumix 100-400mm and is reported to be sharper as well and it can take in the EC-14 and EC-20 teleconverters for occasional additional reach (Teleconverters are basically designed for Prime lenses to provide additional Reach)...This gives the Olympus 100-400 mm Lens a little more flexibility over the Panny 100-400mm Lens....Warmly recommend Robin Wong's MFT channel :kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5OZaICCrd6Eqq8

Yes, the G9 feels like an improved camera after the update. Hopefully, Panasonic will release a mark ii version of this G9 because this is the truly only still camera Panasonic offers right now. Also, I am starting to take more 60p video with my 100-400 Panasonic Leica with birds and found that difficult to use variable ND filter. I struggle to focus when I put a variable nd filter on a super telephoto lens. Just wondering what your experience is with nd filter and recommendations? Many thanks
@ImageMaven3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely harder to see what's going on with an ND filter attached. And I imagine even worse with the 100-400mm as your peripheral view with your eyes is harder as your subject is so far away. I suggest setting your viewfinder to LIVE VIEW BOOST so that your viewfinder is brighter when using the ND filter. Go to the Shooting menu/ Tools/ Monitor-Display to find that . Hope that helps.

I love the Lumix philosophy of continuous looking after the needs of existing Lumix owners. How different this is is highlighted by GoPro where all features a camera has are present at launch. Any firmware updates are merely to fix problems/bugs identified by reviewers, but to get updated features/functionality requires purchasing the next model. Panasonic really looks after its customers. You don’t think ‘autofocus’ was a panasonic problem? I just started recently looking into camera’s, and that is what i constantly saw mentioned as a ‘problem’. So it’s not different from other brands…
@artistjoh2 жыл бұрын
@@Stevenafoe Autofocus has never been an issue for me. Besides the fact that Panasonic G9 AF is excellent for stills photography, I mostly shoot manual anyway, especially for video. KZbin commentary rarely points out that with normal stills photography contrast-detect can be faster than phase-detect. it is mostly video where phase detect is better. You should find the videos of David Thorpe. You will know you have the right channel by the red avatar with black portrait drawing. David has sadly passed away, but he made lots of good MFT reviews over many years and his family has left his videos online. A good starting point is Why I (Still) Use Micro Four Thirds: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn_QoaednN6rg6-cttps://kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn_QoaednN6rg68 I started my career in 1962, (David was also an old time photographer) so for me manual focus is preferable in most situations. AF has its uses, but as with any camera usage, it is something to tweak to suit the situation, and only to be used where it is the best thing to use for that situation. KZbin reviewers tend to both look for problems, and seem to rarely spend enough time with a camera to really get the most out of it. Thus, if you are the sort who just puts things on auto and let the camera do all the work then get a Sony. But if you are someone who delves into menus and really likes to learn what the camera can do then Panasonic G9, GH5 M2, or GH6 are a superb choice. I shoot Lumix, Sony, and Canon, although my 1Dx and 7D ii, and the last of my EF lenses are heading for the sale room. I use the Sony A7 R ii, and A7 S ii for when I want a full frame look, but 95% of the time I reach for the G9. Paradoxically when I do use Sony, I tend to use the Sony's almost exclusively in manual focus because I use Sony with Zeiss manual focus lenses. The Lumix feature sets of top end Panasonic cameras are far more useful to me than Sony's more limited capabilities. Their AF might be good, but there is a lot more to a camera than autofocus. For example, I work with animation, and the G9 supports onion skinning for stop motion animation, and even joins the images into a video clip in-camera. For my work that is brilliant. I also love their support for superb black and white. I am the arty type who likes that. I should also point out that Sony gives you a heart attack whenever you hear their prices on lenses and accessories. However, do you actually need the complexity and expense of an expensive interchangeable lens camera system? Professionals definitely need to invest the big bucks, but smaller cameras like an RX100 VII, or a ZV-1 are brilliant little cameras these days, and an excellent step-up from them is the ZV-10 and they are great for almost all non-professional work. As technology has advanced it means those more consumer oriented cameras can do things now that only a super-duper pro camera was capable of a few years ago. If you decide to go MFT, the G9 represents the best bang for the buck on the market. If you go Sony they do have excellent AF, but you pay through the nose for it, and I would look at their smaller cameras. Whatever you decide, I am sure you will love it. Most cameras have gotten really good in recent years, so please treat KZbin commentary with a very large grain of salt.

Simply no orange box appears at all. And apparently, you can not "reload" the new version. Any ideas on what is going on? I did check and I have the 2.4 version. TIA for any input. Hello good morning and thank you for the excellent review ... I am thinking about a drastic decision that may seem blasphemous but which would respond to a need for greater praticità: I am an owner of a gx80 as a second body, I feel extremely uncomfortable to carry around my Canon kit (5dmkIV + lenses ) and I would be tempted to trade it in with a G9 + 12-60 panaleica + 12 mm panaleica 1.4 + 7/14 vario G (I already have zoom and 14/42 in use with the Gx80) ... do you think such a shockino choice would take me in the long run to a repentance due to a marked difference in photographic quality? Thanks a lot for your attention
@ImageMaven3 жыл бұрын
Hi Francesco. I made a similar choice about 8-9 years ago. I sold my Canon 5D Mk2 after getting a Lumix GH3. I got the GH3 for shooting my KZbin videos because at the time, Canon was lagging behind on their video AF. I was very happy to lose all that gear because it wasn't fun to carry around! Both dSLR and M4/3 technology has changed a lot since then. I guess it depends on your goals for your photography practice, including the types of subjects you shoot. You're going from full frame to a sensor that's half the size. So you'd likely notice a difference in the noise at high ISO. But if you're happy with the image quality you're getting out of the Gx80 then you'll be very happy with the G9 image quality. If you find you reach for the Lumix before the Canon, then perhaps it's time to sell the Canon. Keep in mind the G9 isn't super small. It's one of the largest Lumix bodies out there. But compared to your Canon FF, it will seem much more manageable. Lenses are much lighter too. Plus you may not need all of those lenses right away. The 12-60 is pretty awesome all-around. But it's always nice to have a good prime too. I love my 15mm f/1.7 But in reality it doesn't get much use. But that's probably because I'm into birding these days. Hope that helps a bit. Clearly I'm in the M4/3 camp, but I have also advised friends to keep their dSLR because they are getting the results they want, and there's no need to fix something that's not broken.
