Hello Mate, I'm originally from Nottingham but I now live in North Carolina USA, we fish Pay-lakes here which are kind of syndicate match lakes for carp, we use a kind of method feed called pack bait, during summer a porridge oats or instant rice is good but now winter is here they say bread is better, Ive liquidized a couple of loaves and was wondering what to add to it to make it pack around the lead, a binding agent?

Hi mate. Never actually packed it round a lead before as I normally use a cage feeder if I'm going to fish it on the bottom. I know people who have used it on a method feeder but they normally mix it 50/50 with white crumb groundbait. The trick to get it to work properly will be to use a binder that makes it hold together on the lead till it hits the bottom but then allows it to act normally. It it was me I would try the following three ingredients in various quantities and see which one works best. caster or icing sugar - the moisture in the bread should be enough to make this bind without having to wet it at all and the sugar will dissolve very quickly in water. Horlicks or malted milk drink powder (I think you can get something similar in the states) - this works well with maggots as an alternative to sticky-maggot binder but you may need to use an atomizer to get this to work. Or you could try milk powder - lots of people add a bit of this to their liquidised bread to give is a bit of extra attraction and also to help to get it to the bottom when the water is towing a bit. One of these might work if you have to use a lead rather than a feeder and all three are very palatable to carp. Another alternative would be to put the bread into a fast dissolve PVA bag and simply attach this to the hook. As soon as it hits the bottom the bag will dissolve leaving your hookbait sat on top of a pile of liquidized bread. Happy experimenting and let us know how you get on. Tight Lines, Gus

I was casting up against the far bank weed and then sinking the line. This put me about a mtr and a half away from it. I find that due to the clear water on the canal the better roach don't like to be too close to the weed as that is where the predators lie in wait. Instead they will hold in shoals just off the bottom either side of the boat channel on the slope. Gus
