Just a wee bit of advice I noticed some nails sticking up in a bit of wood on the ground. It's a very good practice to get into to take 1 min to just flatten over any nails you have in the old wood you remove. I have unfortunately experienced a nail up my foot and it's not fun. Also it protects others. No matter how careful you are those nails are always a risk as it just takes one laps in concentration to stand or fall on one. Thank you for the video and for the time you took to make it. 😊

@@Bacrenfencing Im planning a closed-boarded fence with a 25mm overlap. Is it best to ensure that the nail only goes through a single board I.e. just past the overlap, rather than nailing both boards on the edge?
@Bacrenfencing
@Bacrenfencing Жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, If you are using feather edge boards, then yes, only nail one single board. Feather edge boards are flimsy and if you nail through both boards, then there is a good chance that the boards will split over time due to expansion and contraction. Hope this helps.

Great explanation thanks. Just wondering what you would do if you were unlucky and drilled through the mortar???
@Bacrenfencing
@Bacrenfencing 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Danny, that does happen now and again and to get round that, I generally then go in with a 10mm bolt and just tighten it very slightly, that tends to work but obviously not as strong a fixing as going in to the block work. The other option is to just drill another hole a couple of inches up from the old hole and then fill the old hole / recess. Thanks for the comment 👍

Difficult to scribe a 4x4 fence post, quicker to just notch it and cover it with a scribed fence slat.

Hi, I am adding a railing to my small front stoop. I have 4x4 posts and I want to attach one of them to the house. The house wall is brick but it is EXTREMELY uneven. I don't know what to call that type of brick but they are full of bumps and when I place anything straight and flat against that wall, I see spaces as big as 1/2" - or even more. Do I need some kind of shims to put between the 4x4 and the house wall? If so, how do I attach those shims behind the post. I don't want concrete/masonry screws to show behind the post and I don't know what to do. Please help. I would really appreciate it. I have seen quite a few videos on KZbin but I haven't seen a case where the bricks are so uneven. I would appreciate your advice. Kind regards.
@Bacrenfencing
@Bacrenfencing 2 ай бұрын
Just attach the post like I did in this video and then use fence slats scribed to the wall to cover the gaps between the post and the wall. No need to shim if you have a couple of good points of contact.

Would it make a difference if I were affixing a mounting board to an exterior stucco wall at a spot where I am certain to hit the interior stud? Should I use a smaller bit/screw? Shorter? Should there be some sort of silicone or flashing between the stucco and wood?

You didn't do anything to prevent moisture from getting into the wall where you drilled. You should shoot some caulk of sealant in the hole you drilled before putting the fastner i

It's a cavity wall, like most walls here in the UK, so no need. Also, the fixings did not go through the first course of brick, so no moisture would get in anyway. Thanks for the comment

I have a couple of the Dewalt combi and SDS drills, here is the combi I use - amzn.to/3N23bTA I have had my oldest one for nearly 9 years and it is still going strong, so would highly recommend it. I can't really comment on the Makita combi as I have never owned one. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment 👍
