With the video prior to this one, I realized that I have no idea why I subscribed and watch this channel except that I always enjoy it; I always learn something. Not to mention that you and your staff have the best voice and manner. I find myself engaged in the subject. I have been responsible for many properties, large and small, and at no time was attaching fencing to any building ever discussed or considered, not even for dog runs or the like. Doing so adds another layer of possible and probable difficulties. In your climate and mine, things shift, even when sunk to levels required by local code. If that happens when fence and building are not attached, there is a possible awkward aesthetic thing happening and nothing more. When fence and building are attached and one or the other shifts, it could mean damage. Natural forces of heaving and such are extremely powerful. Please keep doing what you're doing and posting videos. I promise to continue enjoying them, even if I'm not entirely sure why.

Some insurance companies will consider the fence part of the home for replacement cost purposes if it is attached. Otherwise it’s considered a detached structure, like a shed is. Is it worth it to have your few thousand dollar fence be considered part of the home its self vs it being a detached structure? Probably not.

I attach to houses all the time here in UK. Houses in the UK are built entirely with bricks / blocks so you get a great fixing to the house, especially gate posts. Never had any issues, but each to their own !

I totally agree. My problem is this slab house has drain tile within 6 inches of the foundation and it's shallow. It's roughly 6-8 inches below grade. I don't want to attach it to the house so I'm on KZbin looking for alternatives. The only thing I can think of off hand is to dig out the drain tile and relocate it. I would rather not, but unless I csn find a better solution, it's what I'll end up doing. The previous owner set the post right at the drain tile so it's unstable and shifts when I open/ close the gate. It's a double gate so it's weight moves the post. Errrr! I won't attach it to the house because I don't want any penetrations to potentially allow water in to damage my newly installed sheathing, rigid insulation and siding.

Wait! There's an offset post??? That will work for what I have going on. Now I just need to find a supplier that has it

How are they going to run their brick behind your post when it's so close to the house?
@NoahDevine912 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree DO NOT attach fence to house or structures. Far better off to not do so not worth the risk. What we do in rare circumstances if foundation is in the way set your post close as you can and build a custom gap filler section. But get as close as possible and do not attach!!! Atleast that’s how we do 😀 like, subscribe and other positive affirmations 👍👍👍 have a great dang day and merry Christmas

Few questions about if you don't attach to a house and are doing traditional vinyl in concrete method. (1) Can you pour concrete and have it touch your foundations concrete? (2) If you do pour concrete, won't you have to do a semi-circle instead of the full circle? Will that be a weak point or is there some minimum number of inches of concrete you need to keep around the post to keep it structurally secure? (3) How would you offset it using the traditional method (or do you still use an offset beam and bury it in concrete further away)? Thank you guys love your videos!

If I'm not wrong in Florida the fence has to be attached to the house to be covered on your insurance if not it's a detached structure or something like that and not covered
@rightwaycomm03272 жыл бұрын
100% True. Insurance isn't covering any fence not physically attached to the home. Doesn't make sense, but I'm dealing with it daily after our last hurricane.

Don't kid yourself, in Florida insurance isn't covering anything at all, including your house. If your house/property was damaged in any of our recent big hurricanes you found that out the hard way!!

Dan, I think I have the answer to all your qualms about attaching fences to houses. First of all, let’s take a look at attachment methods. Ring shank nails hold twice as well as commons do… so you can use shorter nails! Screws hold even better… so shorten ‘em up a little more! Now, iffen you still have cold feet (understandable in Wyoming this time of year) about penetrating the wall… think adhesives. What with super glue, epoxy, duct tape, baling wire and zip ties… there are countless options for surface adhering the fence to the wall. Be creative… you can surely put your anxiety to rest! Secondly… wind loads can easily be brought to bay with a few Midwest farmer tricks. The obvious one is to take a look at any old lean-to chicken coop. All you need is to chop down a couple of Osage Orange saplings. After pointing the bottom and skinning off the bark with a draw knife, you can drive them into the ground at a diagonal. If you chose wisely, the brace will have a fork at the top that you can just wedge against the post. If not, use one of those ring shanks to attach it ti the top of the post. That my friend is an invincible wind brace!!! You doubt it’ll work? Just send MBTC over here. He can get photographic proof of chicken coops that have stood up against tornadoes, floods and woodpeckers for decades! So, unlax a just a wee bit young man. With these Hintful tips…. It can be did!!! And, you’ll have a good danged day too…

My preferred way of attaching a post to a house is…sawzall a 8” square hole in the house on each side of the post then you take duct tape and run it around your post and through the wall firmly attaching the post to the home. Don’t know why you guys make it so difficult??

I have a gas line that runs along the house, 2 feet from the foundation. Can't put a post closer than 4 feet. How else am i supposed to get a vinyl fence close to the house?

There's absolutely no legit reason to ever attach a post or the railing to the house. EVER!

In Los Angeles we have cement footings from the house what do you there ?

We might reach for an offset post in that situation.

There’s Nothing wrong with attaching to the house. The reality is Water does not leak in, you don’t hit electrical wires and if you take the attachment off the house the homeowner may have to re-paint to match the color of the house. It’s a silly hill to die on. Keep on fencing
