Hi David, thanks for your question. I'm by no means a radio expert to be honest. Though, from what I understand the FM modulator allows you to 'input' into the radio from other devices, such as a mobile phone etc. The Band expander does a very different job, it 'shifts' the frequency range on the radio either up or down so that it can receive, essentially, a radio station which would normally be outside its normal reception range. So, as a direct answer, I think you'll have to use both and wire one after another, like you said, in series. It may work best with say the band expander first after the ariel then the modulator closest to the radio unit. I hope this helps you get sorted. Once the job its done could you give me some feedback on if my ideas were correct or if you needed to do something extra/different. Maybe it will help someone else out too. Cheers - Andy Mechanic!

Thanks for your reply, I have an imported Nissan which requires a band expander to recieve anything 100mHz and above but I also want to install the FM modulator so I can have an auxilliary input (as the current head unit is in a molded case and doesnt have one). They both require the aerial input on the head unit.. ill try it this weekend and see how it goes hah.

Hi Any, new subscribrer to your channel. Can i ask you a question about fitting a band expander to my 2004 Nissan Presage I just bought. The sound system appears to be apart of the whole dash arrangment. No obvious radio to be seen. Although beneath the consol is a CD stacker and after market DVD player.

hey fella - another good video. Just wanted to check: when I do the final voltage check (after connecting up to the positive) do I need to turn the key to Accessory power or should it start without that?

At 5:41 onward. Can you please tell me the color code wires (cable) FROM car socket what need to be hooked into the expander. I think Nissan use this special socket for all Nissan car as the aerial in conjunction with the power for the built in radio aerial amplifier? My Elgrand E51 has installed an after market android unit by the car dealer. The antenna socket was modified (joined as a normal standard socket) But the AM and FM signal was REALLY BAD. I am looking for a power wire that lead to the built in radio amplifier unit in-order to boost up the signal strength for the radio (AM). Can you please advice the color code wires in details (such as: solid/black,/white/strip/dash line color). Thanks billions

You should be able to get a band expander for that radio - best to check with your local car audio Shop. Sorry, I haven't done one of those cars before. Cheers Andy

Hi there, are you able to tell me if an FM modulator acts as an FM band extender? If I require both will I have to put the modulator and band extender aerial connections in series?

Hi there, I have done a similar install on a 2006 Nissan Fuga, same grey plug as per the Nissan Leaf. I found in my vehicle that I am picking up new stations however my antenna strength seems rather low and barely picking up the station. Any advice on how to strengthen the antenna signal?

Hi Anthony, thanks for the feedback. I'll have an ask around and see who I know that has that model and year. The band expander fitment will be a very similar job, though the Arial connector may be different. With respect to the Aux input, you say 'fix' is it not recognising when you have, say an ipod connected?

Hi Andy, your videos are absolutely informative and helpful thanks for that . Can you please upload a video for Nissan Murano 2007. How to fix the aux in put and the Fm band expander? waiting to see. Thanks.

Just a couple of minutes into the video and I have to ask, is radio in NZ still actually worth listening to? I haven't listened to Australian radio for over two decades, around the time it fully transformed into 16-hour-a-day marketing for record companies with 8 hours worth of assorted other advertising to make up the 24. Personally, the first thing I do when I buy a vehicle is to install a $200-$300 ($AUD) Chinese GPS/DVD all-in-one unit and load a few thousand songs onto a microSD card so I don't have to worry about channel surfing on the radio to avoid advertising/yelling/religion/politics.

But honestly, isn't it just better to replace the radio with a cheap and cheerful one from a mainstream brand on special? (Sony, JVC, Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood) Can costs 65 bucks, plus two adaptors and maybe a single-din bracket.
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
+Desmond Sometimes the radios are specific to the dash style and a standard cheap radio just won't fit or will look terrible!
@chrischoy9
@chrischoy9 6 жыл бұрын
Oh that's true, but more specifically I was referring to cheap JVC units. Those units fit in nicely and look good enough except for the piano gloss which seems to be geared towards 2010+ cars. But yeah, I'd rather have a band expander than live with a crap warehouse radio (American Hi Fi)

NO, NO, NO! With this connection you won't be able to listen the radio without keys in to accessories position! If you want to listen the radio without keys in the car, lets say you live the passengers in car and you don't want to leave the key in the car, you have to connect that radio adapter or antenna amplifire in the same way as OEM motor antenna works, via relay. You have to add a standard 12V relay which is triggered by the blue wire the coil in relay (pin 86) , coil ground (pin 85) and bring the live wire +30 to contact of relay (pin 30) to connect and supply adaptor wire via contact pin 87 on relay. In this connection you will be able to listen the radio without leaving the keys in the car for safety reasons lets say you have to leave the kids in car for few minutes with radio on.
@AndyMechanic

I'd rather not have the possibility of leaving the radio turned on my mistake & it discharge the battery. All factory fit radios only work once the key is in the ignition & turned to the first position. However, if you'd like to wire your radio up so it works all the time then that's just fine :-) Thanks for your feedback Cheers Andy
